A Prayer For Wisdom & To Live Free In America
We call it Independence Day … the day we remember that living free in America is a blessing.
I’ve shared the story before of my wrong answer to a newscaster who caught me on the street and asked me about the historical reason for celebrating the 4th of July.
I completely forgot everything I’d learned in school. With the camera rolling and a microphone in my face I replied, “It’s the anniversary of the day the Founding Fathers signed The Constitution.”
I immediately knew I was wrong and asked her not to share my embarrassment publicly but of course, several people walked up to me at church the following morning grinning from ear to ear letting me know they enjoyed seeing me on the evening news.
It was not this teacher’s proudest moment.
So, that’s one of the reasons I’ve since made efforts to be more aware of the blessings we enjoy as a nation and the history that has made them possible.
I’m thankful for the men and women who courageously sacrificed for our country so that we might enjoy the rights and freedoms for which our founding fathers took a stand back in 1776 when they signed the Declaration of Independence and fought for autonomy.
I’m thankful they boldly took a stand for the citizens of the U. S. to live free of the oppression and tyranny of men to live freely under the authority of the Creator…
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The truth about living free in America is that it allows us to make foolish choices. And as we learn throughout the pages of Scripture … foolish choices lead to undesirable consequences.
Solomon wrote…
People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord.
Proverbs 19:3
We need godly wisdom in every area of our country and the Word tells us if we need wisdom we need to ask God…
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
James 1:5
So, today, I’d like to P.R.A.Y. and lift the needs of America asking God to remove our foolishness and give us wisdom so that we might honor Him with the blessing of freedom we enjoy today and hope to enjoy in the future.
A Prayer For Wisdom & To Live Free In America
Praise
May the nations praise You, O God.
Psalm 67:3–4
Yes, may all the nations praise You.
Let the whole world sing for joy,
because You govern the nations with justice
and guide the people of the whole world.
Father, I thank and praise You for the blessing of founders who built a nation on freedom … a freedom we enjoy only because of Your grace and mercy.
I thank and praise You for setting us free through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Since sin entered our world freedom has been built on sacrifice. So, I thank You for all who have willingly sacrificed so that we might enjoy independence.
May I never take this blessing for granted but humbly surrender myself to Your will for Your glory. Amen.
Repent
If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
Father, we repent of the sins of our nation. We don’t love and obey You as we should. We ignore and disobey. We don’t love and help each other as You have asked. We selfishly strive to take care of ourselves. Please forgive us. We fall before You, confess our sin, and ask that You will help us turn from our stubborn ways to follow You.
Ask
From one man He created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and He determined their boundaries.
Acts 17:26–27
“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him—though He is not far from any one of us.
Father, I pray that we might humble ourselves before You and live as wise stewards of this beautiful land. I pray we might recognize You as Lord of all and especially as the Lord of our nation.
By the power of Your Spirit, please work in the hearts and minds of our nation’s leaders and move them to make wise decisions that align with Your will. Please work in the hearts and minds of each resident so that we might KNOW, TRUST, LOVE, and OBEY You—God our Father, our Savior, and Spirit who guides us.
Please strengthen us to love each other as You command. Unite us and help us stand together as we trust Your plans and purposes. By Your mercy and grace, please grant us Your peace.
Yield
Lead me by Your truth and teach me,
Psalm 25:5
for You are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in You.
Father, I surrender myself to You and pray that by faith there will be an outpouring of Spirit-led surrender throughout our land. May we entrust ourselves to Your care and keeping. May we honor and glorify You individually and collectively.
You are the God who saves. May we humble ourselves before You and trust You in every situation and circumstance. I thank and praise You for who You are, and for all You’ve done and continue to do. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. God please bless America by Your grace and for Your glory.

In this world right now, it is so very important to pray for world leaders who will rise up to the challenges keeping God first. I have never been political, but I am greatful to live in a free country where we have so much privilege. The world is a pretty scary place today. Especially trying to raise my 9 yr old daughter. For 13 years I had the privilege of being the manager and tour guide in the home of one of our signers of the Declaration of Independence. This gave me more insight into the great sacrifices of these Patriots. Their bravery put them and their families at risk and in so much danger.
We have the greatest country in this world and so many have lost their lives protecting it and our freedom. I am proud to be an American. This was a wonderful post today and a blessed reminder to all of us of how fortunate we all are to live in the USA.
