C. S. Lewis understood the pain of grief. In fact, he honestly wrote about his emotions and faith ... words that were published into a helpful book for anyone with a grieving heart.

What do you do when you’re having a hard day? Do you call a friend? Go back to bed? Sit in the pantry?

I often return to quotes, verses, and prayers that have blessed me in the past. So today, I’m turning to some quotes from C. S. Lewis, adding well-loved verses, and going to God in prayer…

Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, on November 29th, 1898. He entered the presence of the Lord one week before his 65th birthday in 1963.

A former atheist, Lewis became a Christian scholar, author, and Theologian touching lives worldwide with His strong faith through writing and teaching.

Besides the well-known Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, and The Screwtape Letters, C. S. Lewis is also known for his “raw and personal” book on grief written following the death of his wife, Joy, in 1960.

A Grief Observed begins with the following..

“No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid.”

Grief is walking into the unknown but by God’s grace, we don’t have to take the journey alone.

C. S. Lewis understood the pain of grief. In fact, he honestly wrote about his emotions and faith ... words that were published into a helpful book for anyone with a grieving heart.

The following quotes and verses are an encouraging reminder of God’s grace, mercy, and love…

Powerful C. S. Lewis Quotes
for the Grieving Heart

“God can’t give us peace and happiness apart from Himself because there is no such thing.”
― C.S. Lewis

Since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.

Romans 5:1

Loving and trusting Jesus is the only way to experience lasting peace and happiness.

“Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
― C.S. Lewis

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need Your help. Protect me, for I am devoted to You. Save me, for I serve You and trust You. You are my God.

Psalm 86:1–2

In every circumstance, but especially in our pain, God hears and answers the cries of our hearts.

“I know now, Lord, why You utter no answer. You are Yourself the answer. Before Your face questions die away. What other answer would suffice?”
― C.S. Lewis

There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”

Acts 4:12

As we look for solutions to life’s pain and problems, Jesus is the only answer that lasts forever.

“He died not for men, but for each man. If each man had been the only man made, He would have done no less.”

My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20

Remember and repeat often—if you were the only person in the world, Jesus still would have given His life for you.

“There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

Revelation 21:4

By the power of the Spirit may we never stop looking ahead with beautiful anticipation.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for God’s Peace and Strength

Father God, we need You. You alone are our source of lasting peace. You are the One who gives us strength and courage to endure when life is painful. You are the God who saves.

We fail to trust and obey You fully. But You sent Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins. You are the Prodigal Father who runs to meet and embrace us when we realize our need for You. And You have prepared a celebration for the day we arrive in Your heavenly presence.

How can I begin to thank You? Nothing I have could ever be sufficient. But I will give You my heart and soul. I will love You with all that I am. I will entrust my present and my future to Your loving care.

You are the answer to everything I need. You are the Lord of my life. I worship and praise You forever and always. By Your grace and for Your glory. Amen.

C. S. Lewis understood the pain of grief. In fact, he honestly wrote about his emotions and faith ... words that were published into a helpful book for anyone with a grieving heart.

And finally, one more powerful quote from C. S. Lewis…

“And out of that hopeless attempt has come nearly all that we call human history—money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery—the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.”

There is nothing else. No one else can satisfy the longing of our hearts because our Creator made us for Himself. Nothing will fill us with peace, joy, hope, strength, and everything else we need … like a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father.

So, when your grieving heart makes your days hard, lean on the Lord who promises to wipe the tears from our eyes and surround us with His all-sufficient grace.

He makes the impossible possible. And He never leaves us or forsakes us.

May our Lord and Savior give you everything you need today and always.

We would love to pray for you.

  6. Hello, Deb,
I pray that all is well with you. 🙏
Thank you for the encouraging messages and quotes from C.S. Lewis.
I often go to his quotes when leading a Bible study group.
No matter how we experience grief, YHWH, comes and meets us at our point of need. Ministering our different needs. What we need in our grief is to be reminded of God’s promises-to be grounded in His truth. We never grieve alone. YHWH, walks with us each day.
    He is our refuge.
“ You have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul.”
    ~ Psalm 31:7.
Deb, may you have a Blessed and joyful week.
    In His Kingdom,
