Have Faith and Live to Give God Glory Now
About 30 years ago, I walked into a beautiful bookstore and found a copy of In His Steps by Charles Sheldon in the sale section. Rev and I were on vacation and had a little free time; so, I decided to get a copy.
I quickly learned that the book is based on this verse…
For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in His steps.
1 Peter 2:21
Since 1896, countless people have asked “WWJD—What Would Jesus Do?” because a group of Christian characters was challenged to trust and follow Jesus. Like many of you, I applied that question to my life for years.
Then…
I came across another verse that hit my heart and changed my life…
So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
Romans 6:13b
How might your life change if you faithfully asked yourself, “WWGGG—What Would Give God Glory?”
Jesus said…
When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.
John 15:8
But “What did Jesus mean when He said, ‘produce much fruit?'”
A couple of places in Scripture help us answer that question.
Jesus said…
“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and He prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more … Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.”
John 15:1–2, 4
And Paul wrote…
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control … Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.
Galatians 5:22–23a, 25
So, how do people who have faith live in ways that give God glory?
I believe they love God and love people through the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. And to produce that fruit we all need the Holy Spirit’s help through faith in Jesus.
What would Jesus do? He would live to give God glory. In fact, He did live for God’s glory.
So, can you imagine the difference God’s people would make in the world if they all made it a goal to live for God’s glory because that’s what Jesus would do?
Let’s pray…
A Prayer for the Holy Spirit’s Help to
Produce Fruit and Give God Glory
Father God, thank You for the wonderful ways Jesus showed us Your loving character. He faithfully taught and lived Your perfect will and glorified You in everything He said and did.
I want to live like Jesus. I want to love the way He loves and follow Your will by obeying You in everything I say and do. Please forgive me, Father. I know I fall short of that goal daily.
I pray that by the power of Your Spirit, I will be enabled to produce fruit for Your glory. I want to find joy and peace in Your presence and love the people around me with patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I want to love You with all I am and love others as You desire.
Please give me a passion for Your Word and prayer so that I might KNOW what Jesus would do. I want to live like Jesus and live my life for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Here are a few quotes from In His Steps and verses about glorifying God…
“Our motto will be, ‘What would Jesus do?’ Our aim will be to act just as He would if He was in our places, regardless of immediate results. In other words, we propose to follow Jesus’ steps as closely and as literally as we believe He taught His disciples to do. And those who volunteer to do this will pledge themselves for an entire year, beginning with today, so to act.” ~ Charles Sheldon
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:!6 (ESV)
“No man can tell until he is moved by the Divine Spirit what he may do, or how he may change the current of a lifetime of fixed habits of thought and speech and action.” ~ Charles Sheldon
“After we have asked the Spirit to tell us what Jesus would do and have received an answer to it, we are to act regardless of the results to ourselves. Is that understood?” ~ Charles Sheldon
Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
Psalm 115:1
but to Your name goes all the glory
for Your unfailing love and faithfulness.
May the Lord give you courage and strength as you surrender to the Holy Spirit inviting Him to help you give God glory by doing what Jesus would do.
We would love to pray for you.
