Why It’s Important to Believe that Jesus is God

Someone recently left a comment saying, "Jesus is not God." That prompted a closer look at why I believe that Jesus is God by looking at claims He made and things other people said about Him.

Do you believe that Jesus is God?

Someone recently left a comment on one of my older posts that began, “Jesus is not God.”

They added that only Jehovah is God and added several Bible references to assert their point.

In several verses, Jesus referred to God as “Father,” so the commenter believed that Jesus was simply pointing people to Jehovah/Yahweh.

However, Jesus also said…

  • Trust in God, and trust also in me. (John 14:1)
  • “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
  • “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!” (John 14:9)
  • “The Father and I are one.” (John 10:30)
  • “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am!” (John 8:58)
  • “Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.” (John 17:5)

When I opened my Bible to work on today’s post, I found the following…

When Jesus heard what had happened, He found the man and asked, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

The man answered, “Who is He, sir? I want to believe in Him.”

“You have seen Him,” Jesus said, “and He is speaking to you!”

“Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus.

John 9:35–38

Jesus was talking to the man who had been born blind, whom He had recently healed. The man who lost friends, family, and fellowship at the Synagogue because he testified to the miraculous healing he had received from Jesus.

Jesus had healed his physical sight, but now He wanted to talk to him about his spiritual sight.

“Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

Some translations read the Son of God, others say the “Son of Man,” which is the title Jesus primarily used for Himself. Both were names given to the Messiah.

So, Jesus asked him…

“Do you believe in the Messiah?”

Like the father who cried, “I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief” (Mark 9:24), the man replied, “I want to believe in Him.”

Jesus had healed his eyes, and now, He was knocking on the door of his heart to heal him for all eternity. And by God’s grace, he proclaimed…

“Yes, Lord, I believe!”

Do you believe Jesus is God?

Jesus proclaimed that He is the only way to the Father. The One who came to give His life as a ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28)

We either believe Jesus is the Son of God and that He is who He said He is, or we reject Him, believing He is either delusional or a liar. There are no in-betweens. He’s not just a prophet, a good man, a great teacher, or an important spiritual leader.

John wrote in Revelation…

This is the message from the One who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning [source, ruler] of God’s new creation:

“[Behold!] I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

Revelation 3:14, 20

That’s the blessing of spiritual healing … hearing the voice of Jesus calling, and with the Spirit’s help, we open our hearts and believe that Jesus is God.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Believe that Jesus is God

Heavenly Father, thank you for wanting us to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST You. Thank you for blessing us with Your written Word that tells us about You and the world You created.

Through Your Word, we trust You are the Triune God – Three in persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) but One in spirit, purpose, existence, and nature. You are Creator, Savior, and Comforter. You are Lord of all and Lord of my life.

Your Word says we are born naturally sinful, and because we are sinners, there is nothing we can do to be holy enough to enter Your presence. But Your love is greater than we can understand. It is so huge that You sent Jesus to do for us what we could not do for ourselves.

By Your grace and the power of Your Spirit, I believe Jesus is God. I believe He lived the sinless life I am unable to live, that He suffered my punishment on the cross, died, and rose again, defeating all that separates me from You.

Thank you for giving me faith. Please help me make You the center of my life and give me the strength to trust and obey Your will. Please bless me with all I need to share the love of Jesus, my Savior, with everyone around me. It’s in His name, I pray. Amen.

Paul wrote…

For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.

Colossians 2:9

And John wrote…

No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side—He has revealed Him.

John 1:18 (CSB)

God’s Word is clear. If we believe the written Word of God, we believe that Jesus is God.

By grace alone may we boldly say, “Yes, Jesus is God. I believe He is the Messiah and my Lord and Savior.”

We would love to pray for you.

    Hi Deb,
I am sorry, but you are taking your proofs of the Trinity completely out of context. The Bible answers itself. You need to get your answers by reading the full context. Please don’t read a verse and used human judgement to fill in the blanks as many scholars have done and continue to do. For instance, the entire Gospel of John tells us that Jesus’ powers were given to him by God.

The Bible teaches of God, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is what we call the Trinity. They are all to be respected, honored, glorified, and have the same essence. However, God is the Father his power is above that of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Please let the Bible explain itself. Don’t go to the flesh.

    1. I do agree that we worship the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I am not saying that Jesus alone is God. But as I read and reread all of Scripture says that Jesus is God in that He is with the Father and Spirit in being the Triune God. Thanks for visiting and for sharing your thoughts. May God bless you as you continue to study His Word.

  2. Deb, I believe in the Trinity as you described it. I appreciate you and your ability to explain scripture. I am grateful for your wisdom. And for your friendship. May God continue to bless you in the way that you bless all of us.

    1. Thanks so much, Sue. I think the greatness of God is impossible for us to fully explain and understand but all of Scripture points to Jesus as Immanuel – God with us! He is our Lord and Savior and I want everyone to Know, Love, and Trust Him. Thanks as always for your encouragement. You are a true blessing, dear friend!

  3. My mom always taught my sister, brothers and me when we were children that the Trinity was God omnipotent, God on Earth through Jesus Christ, and God within through the Holy Spirit. I loved how she taught us with such simplicity and beauty. The beauty of the Trinity in one spirit, God the Father’s.

    1. What a beautiful way to explain the Trinity and the greatness of God’s love for us. Thanks so much for sharing it Karen. God bless you!
