No one enjoys admitting their sin. Most people would like to ignore the truth about sin. We're all guilty. But God is love and light and wants everyone to come to Him and receive grace through faith.

No one enjoys admitting their sin. Most people would like to ignore the truth about sin.

I think we’re all guilty of succumbing to comparisons and pride, determining that we’re “not guilty.” At least not as guilty as “those people.”

But Paul wrote…

Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:23

And even after many years in ministry, he wrote…

I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.

Romans 7:18b–19

We’re all guilty of thinking, saying, and doing things that go against God’s will for us. Okay, I can’t speak for you, but I know I’m guilty.

John knew this was true, so to stand up to false teachers who: denied the truth about sin and their sinful nature, he wrote…

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

1 John 1:8–9

The enemy consistently uses our sinfulness to draw us away from the close relationship the Lord wants to have with us. That’s why we need to remain prayerfully self-aware and repentant.

Because the truth about sin is that when we confess, we’re agreeing with God that what we’ve done is wrong. And when we repent, we are telling Him that we want to change and live in obedience.

True confession always includes repentance.

Life Application Bible Notes say it like this…

We wouldn’t be genuinely confessing our sins to God if we plan to commit them again and just want temporary forgiveness. We should also pray for strength to defeat temptation the next time we face it.

John’s two verses give us the truth about sin in the Law and Gospel:

Law: We are foolish liars if we deny that we are sinners.
Gospel: But if we confess our sins in Jesus, we are forgiven and washed clean.

Remember the verse before…

If we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:7

This morning, our pastor shared these words, inspiring us to surrender ourselves to God, the Light in whom there is no darkness, through Jesus.

Jesus said…

“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

John 8:12

Jesus could only claim those words because He came from God, was God, and will always be God.

So, in a dark world distorted by the darkness of sin and evil, we have the Light to wash us clean and give us a firm foundation of Truth on which to live.

No one enjoys admitting their sin. Most people would like to ignore the truth about sin. We're all guilty. But God is love and light and wants everyone to come to Him and receive grace through faith.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Overcome Sin and Darkness
with God’s Love and Light

Father God, thank you for loving us so much that You sent Jesus to save us from this world of sin and darkness. I’m so thankful to have His promise that although our world is full of trials and troubles, He has overcome the sin and evil that cause it.

Jesus is my Savior and the Lord of my life. I am a sinner in need of Your saving grace. I know I can be selfish and foolishly prideful. My thoughts are far from what You want for me, and my words and actions fall short of Your will. Please forgive me!

Father, I don’t simply want to confess my sins. I am repenting of them as well. I am sorry, and I don’t want to fail by doing them again. My heart desires to trust and obey You in all things.

Please empower me with Your Spirit. Prompt my thoughts and draw me back to thinking about Your blessings of faith, hope, and love. Please help me produce the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help me share the love of Jesus.

Thank you for inspiring John to assure us of Your faithfulness to forgive us when we come to You through Jesus. Thank you for giving us the Light of Your Word. Thank you for Jesus, the Light of the World. Thank you for being the Light who never fails and never ends.

I surrender myself to You. Use me in ways that glorify You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Verses and Quotes – The Truth About Sin

The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23

“God desires to reveal to us that His capacity to forgive is bigger than our capacity to sin.” ~ A. W. Tozer

“But the great thing to remember is that, though our feelings come and go, His love for us does not. It is not wearied by our sins, or our indifference; and, therefore, it is quite relentless in its determination that we shall be cured of those sins, at whatever cost to us, at whatever cost to Him.” ~ C. S. Lewis

So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.

Ephesians 1:6–7

The truth about sin is that we are sinners in need of grace and forgiveness. The good news is that God sent Jesus, so anyone who KNOWS, LOVES, and TRUSTS Him will be forgiven and saved forever.

May the news of God’s Light and Love bless you and fill you with peace and hope today and always.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. All of this is beautifully said, and I love the quotes by Tozer and Lewis. You know Deb, I love the book of Romans. It is one of my favorites in the Bible. I love Romans 7: verses 18 and 19. It’s so true of my nature. I also love Romans 8: verses 38 and 39. Just knowing that God’s love for us is permanent and nothing can separate us from His love is so comforting. I am a sinner! I do try to obey Him, but I fall short in so many ways, so many days! Thankfully we all have the cleansing blood of Jesus to wash us whiter than snow. Jesus is the Lord of my life, the Life of my life and the Light of my life. That is something of which I am very sure!
Bless you my friend and I pray that your week will be safe and joyful.

    1. Oooh, those are some of my favorite verses, Sue. I love the way you professed your faith. We are so greatly blessed to have His grace, mercy, and love covering us each and every day. Blessings, dear friend!

  2. Martha Orlando says:

We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Forgive us, Father, and help us to truly repent. Blessings, Deb!

    1. Amen, Martha! It’s overwhelming when I think about God’s great love and willingness to forgive repentant hearts. Blessings!
