The Bible tells us that God is Light. When we surrender our lives to Him through faith in Jesus, we will Live in the Light. The good news is that the Light has overcome the darkness & it always will.

What does it mean to “live in the light?”

God created light and separated it from the darkness on the first day of creation. (Genesis 1:3)

And in Revelation 22 we’re told the following about the New Jerusalem, the Holy City…

There will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And [His servants] will reign forever and ever.

Revelation 22:5

Jesus said…

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12 (NIV)

The Life Application Bible Notes tell us…

Light represents all that is good, pure, true, holy, and reliable. Darkness represents things that are sinful and evil. The statement “God is light” means that God is perfectly holy and true and that He alone can guide us out of the darkness of sin.

John wrote in his letter…

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all.

1 John 1:5

When we have a relationship with God through FAITH in Jesus, it becomes our heart’s desire to “live in the Light” of His love. We want to grow in faith and to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST God, and OBEY His TRUTH.

John says it like this…

So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.

1 John 1:6

How do we step out of the darkness to live in the light?

Living in the Light…

♥ Begins with repentance and faith in Jesus.

On the road to Damascus, Jesus, the Light of the World, told Saul (Paul).

I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

Acts 26:18 (NIV)

♥ Continues as we SEEK Him through His Word and Prayer…

Your Word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

Always be joyful.
Never stop praying.
Be thankful in all circumstances,
for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

♥ And builds as we live in fellowship, united with people of faith.

But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:7

I was afraid of the dark as a child. I can still remember many nights when I would lie in bed listening for sounds and watching for shadows.

But when the light came on, darkness and fear disappeared.

That’s living in the presence of God. Our world seems very dark at the moment. But we are not alone. We live in the light of God’s love, and by His grace, fear disappears, and peace and hope rule the day.

The Bible tells us that God is Light. When we surrender our lives to Him through faith in Jesus, we will Live in the Light. The good news is that the Light has overcome the darkness & it always will.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for God’s Help to Live in the Light

Heavenly Father, You are Light. You are all that is good, pure, true, holy, and reliable. Fear is formed in the shadows. Darkness represents the opposite of who You are and all You want for us.

You graciously sent Jesus to reveal Your character to us. You sent Him to show us the Light and make it possible for us to live in the Light through faith in Him. I love His promise that whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness. Jesus defeated sin, death, and the power of satan so we can live in the Light. Like You, Father, He is the Light of Life.

When I live in faith … knowing, loving, and trusting Jesus, I can live free of fear. When I give my days to You, I can trust You to guide me and light my path step by step.

I worship You, and praise Your glorious name. You are my light and my salvation. (Psalm 27:1) Please help me shine the light of Your love to everyone around me. Please make me humble, gracious, and kind.

And help me remember that it only takes a flicker of light to defeat the darkness. It only takes a seed of faith to move a mountain. With You, the impossible becomes possible.

Give me what I need to reflect the light of Your love. Fill me with Your truth, and surround me with people who shine brightly with faith, hope, and love. By Your grace and for Your glory. Amen and Amen.

The Bible tells us that God is Light. When we surrender our lives to Him through faith in Jesus, we will Live in the Light. The good news is that the Light has overcome the darkness & it always will.

Do you struggle with dark thoughts?

Trust God’s promise to forgive all who come to Him in repentance through faith in Jesus. Surrender your day to the Lord in prayer. Learn His promises and His will through His Word. And spend time with people who are light-filled and encouraging.

Promises of God’s Light and Love…

You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

For You [Lord] have rescued me from death;
You have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in Your presence, O God,
    in Your life-giving light.

Psalm 56:13

God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 4:6

By God’s grace through Jesus, we have the Light of His Spirit with and within us. May we focus our hearts on Him, trusting that we have everything we need to live in His Light.
