The Beautiful Truth that God is Your “Abba Father”

What does it mean that God is your "Abba, Father?" Some say it means we can call Him, Daddy, but what if it is more? What if it talks about love, acceptance, and trust? This is the beautiful truth.

What does it mean that God is your “Abba, Father?”

Jesus called God “Father” and invited you and me to call Him “Father” too.

He invited us to pray to “Our Father in heaven.”

The Apostle John wrote…

But to all who believed [Jesus] and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.

John 1:12

And Paul wrote…

For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies and confirms together with our spirit [assuring us] that we [believers] are children of God.

Romans 8:15–16 (AMP)

I turned to Got Questions to learn how they answered the question, “What Does it Mean that God is Our Abba Father?”

“The word Abba is an Aramaic word that means ‘Father.’ It was a common term that expressed affection and confidence and trust. Abba signifies the close, intimate relationship of a father and his child.”

So, I looked up synonyms for the words “affection, confidence, and trust,” and found love, assured dependence, and faith. Picture yourself crawling into a “Daddy’s” lap with childlike trust and love.

I know not everyone has a close, loving relationship with their earthly Father. Imperfect parents and imperfect children can have rocky relationships. Understandably, there are times when our thoughts about our human father can interfere with our thoughts about our Heavenly Father.

But our Abba is THE PERFECT PARENT. He knows our past and our future. He knows what’s best for us now and eternally. He is always at work in us and around us to accomplish the best for us. So, we want to LOVE, TRUST, and OBEY Him.

If you, sinful people, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask Him.

Matthew 7:11

The best gift is Jesus, our perfect Lord and Savior. When we have Him, we have everything we need now and always.

Christine Caine wrote…

“We were never created to settle for mere religion. Jesus did not die so that we could have a religious belief system – but rather a life-giving relationship with our Father.”

We were created for so much more than self-righteous rule following. The Father created us to love and be loved by Him and His children. And love moves us to invite everyone to become part of the family.

That’s God, our “Abba Father!”

He is…

  • Love – (1 John 4:8)
  • Caring – (1 Peter 5:7)
  • Kind – (Psalm 116:5)
  • Faithful – (1 Corinthians 1:9)
  • Compassionate – (Psalm 103:13)
  • Gracious – (Psalm 145:13)
  • Merciful – (2 Corinthians 1:3)
  • Righteous – (Psalm 145:17)
  • Abba Father – (Romans 8:15)
What does it mean that God is your "Abba, Father?" Some say it means we can call Him, Daddy, but what if it is more? What if it talks about love, acceptance, and trust? This is the beautiful truth.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to “Abba Father”

Abba Father, thank you for loving me and wanting a relationship with me. I often act like a spoiled, indulged child. I’m guilty of wanting what You provide more than I want You. I get preoccupied and overly engaged, and fail to quietly sit with Your Word, spending time with You in prayer.

I want to live in peace, but I fail to do the most important things that promise to give me that peace. Please forgive me.

Thank you for patiently working in my life, and for showing me the love of a Prodigal Father. You watch and wait while I foolishly wander. And You run to welcome me with wide open arms when I return in humble repentance.

You call me Your child, a member of Your family. I know how much I love my children. But I love imperfectly. You are perfect love, always doing what is best for me.

I don’t always understand Your ways, but I trust Your will because You know what I need now and in the future. Please help me obey You and follow Your plans, not for the sake of religion or to earn Your blessings and favor, but because I love You.

Thank you for the way You graciously and mercifully care for me, my Abba Father. Thank you for never giving up on me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen

By grace, through faith in Jesus, you and I have been adopted by Jesus’ Abba Father. We are loved and cared for perfectly. When others fail us and let us down, He never will.

Dieter Uchtdorf wrote…

“Think of the purest, most all-consuming love you can imagine. Now multiply that love by an infinite amount—that is the measure of God’s love for you.”

And that’s a beautiful truth that lasts forever…

Because you are His [children], God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Galatians 4:6-7

He is your Abba Father. You are His child.

We would love to pray for you.

    1. Thanks so much, Sue. I know many have said that it’s like saying, “Daddy.” I do believe we are to have that childlike personal love for our Father. But with a love so great that we want to honor and obey Him in all things always. I love Him so much, I never want to fliply take Him for granted. I hope you enjoyed a beautiful weekend. Blessings and HUGS, dear friend!
