It’s Valuable to Ask Why Questions with Faith

My childhood Pastor encouraged us to ask “why” questions. He invited us to lean into our doubts by SEEKing the TRUTH through Bible Study and prayer. He had confidence in God’s ability to increase our faith when we took our struggles to Him.
Life is full of challenges, impossible circumstances that lead us to ask “why” and “what if.” When we study Scripture, we learn about countless individuals who, like us, needed God’s help with their why questions.
And Paul’s letters assure us that God KNOWS the answers to those questions. Even the ones that seem impossible for us to understand.
Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand His decisions and His ways!
Romans 11:33
He continued…
For who can know the Lord’s thoughts?
Romans 11:34–35
Who knows enough to give Him advice?
And who has given Him so much
that He needs to pay it back?
Words similar to those spoken by God in response to Job’s why questions…
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? v. 4
“Who kept the sea inside its boundaries?” v. 8
“Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east? v. 12
“Can you direct the movement of the stars?” v. 31
“Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct?” v.35
Job 38
After God asked Job question after question concerning creating and sustaining nature, people, and animals, Job replied…
“I know that You can do anything,
Job 42:2
and no one can stop You.
You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’
It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about,
things far too wonderful for me.
A few months ago, we learned that even when we don’t understand God’s ways, we can trust His love.
God is in control; yet, while we live in this sinful world, our lives will be affected by evil, death, and the power of Satan.
That’s why we need to take our why questions straight to God. He not only has the answers, He is the ANSWER!
Paul said it like this…
For everything comes from Him and exists by His power and is intended for His glory. All glory to Him forever! Amen.
Romans 11:36
Although our lives are temporarily affected by sin. We are blessed by “God’s wonderful grace and His gift of forgiveness” through our Lord and Savior, Jesus. (Romans 5:15)
When you and I turn to Him through His Word and prayer. When we remember the many ways He has worked in our lives and the lives of others. We can’t help but KNOW that the answer to our why questions is—God is LOVE!
May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Ephesians 3:19

Let’s pray…
A Prayer Thanking God for
Answering Why Questions
Heavenly Father, thank you! You are Lord of all creation. You designed the universe. You know every star and planet, and keep each one perfectly in place. You spoke into being light, water, land, and all living things. And here, on this planet called Earth, You prepared the perfect place for the people You made.
You are all wisdom, knowledge, and truth. It’s humbling to know You designed everything as a home for people with whom You wanted a relationship. And when we sinned, bringing consequences to Your flawless creation, You made a loving plan to save us.
You accomplished that plan, and although it is impossible for us to fully understand Your decisions and Your ways. You gave us a written account so that we might TRUST and LOVE that You are who You say You are. And I believe, because Your Word also shows us that You do what You say You will do. You keep Your promises.
So, when I don’t understand, I will bring my why questions to You in prayer. I will SEEK Your answers through Your Word and the power of Your Spirit.
I don’t expect there are many things I won’t fully understand this side of heaven. But I believe You are the answer. I believe Jesus is Lord, and I trust that He paid the price for my sins. I love You with all that I am and surrender myself to Your loving care. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

John Milton wrote…
“When we speak of knowing God, it must be understood with reference to man’s limited powers of comprehension. God, as He really is, is far beyond man’s imagination, let alone understanding. God has revealed only so much of Himself as our minds can conceive and the weakness of our nature can bear.”
Even though we cannot fully understand, we can trust Him to guide us and give us everything we need…
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
Proverbs 3:5–6
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take.
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else,
Luke 12:31
and He will give you everything you need.
So, may we keep SEEKing the Lord, unafraid of asking why questions, Because we can trust Him to guide and direct us, and give us everything we need.
We would love to pray for you.

God doesn’t mind our why questions and I believe He welcomes them when we ask in faith, trusting Him for eventual answers. Blessings, Deb!
Amen, Martha! What a gracious and good God He is. Blessings!
I have asked God why so many times that HE ought to be real thrilled with me!! Now, I just tell HIM that I don’t understand a lot, but He does and so that is good enough for me!!
I just trust HIM. I guess it comes with age and a lot of tears and acceptance.
God bless you my friend!
I love that, Sue! It’s the best attitude. He is our source of truth, wisdom, and strength. Praise the Lord that He is patient with us through our questions and tears. Blessings and hugs!
Thank you so much for this encouraging message. Our church Daily Bible Reading is in Job and I appreciate how he and even David too asked God why questions. They were honest with God and their faith grew.
I agree, Tinashe! It is a great blessing that God wants us to know that He has welcomed our questions since the beginning. He wants us to come to Him and trust that He is the truth. God be with you and bless you!
