The Important Truth About Being Good Enough

Are you good enough? Advertisers tell you what you need to buy. Society says who you need to know and what you need to do. Some will say you're enough on your own but now it's time to know the truth.

Manufacturers and advertisers make their money telling us we’re not good enough…

Not…

  • skinny enough
  • beautiful enough
  • rich enough,
  • sexy enough
  • popular enough

Of course, we need their products to change all that and reach whatever culture tells us is the recommended idea of perfection.

There’s one thing that’s not on that list. Something the enemy wants us to believe about ourselves. Something he loves to proclaim as he tries to convince us that we don’t need Jesus.

“You’re good enough.”

But the absolute truth is you and I are not good enough. I’m not even close to being good enough.

Oh, I tried for years! I did my best to follow the rules.

What rules? You ask.

All the rules. And if life wasn’t going well . . . I was convinced it was because I was failing somewhere. If our family was struggling in some area … well, you get the idea!

Our children still laugh (kind of) about the mornings I would announce that I’d spent the night with the Lord because I couldn’t sleep. A proclamation that meant we would be making big changes to do a better job of following the rules as a family.

No matter how hard I tried. I was never good enough. I constantly fell short of my own standards let alone consistently obeying God’s will.

If you’re nodding in agreement, remember … we’re not alone. The Apostle Paul wrote…

I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.

Romans 7:18–19

We’re sinners and we’re not good enough!

Martin Luther said it like this…

“The sin underneath all our sins is to trust the lie of the serpent that we cannot trust the love and grace of Christ and must take matters into our own hands”

No matter how hard we try to check all the boxes we still do and say things we shouldn’t and we don’t do the things we should!

We struggle with stinky attitudes, bad behavior, disloyal hearts, and our thoughts betray us multiple times each day.

We’re guilty of comparing ourselves with each other rather than examining ourselves according to God’s will that tells us to reflect His character and love like Jesus.

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.

1 John 2:15–16

The truth … we’re not good enough and we need Jesus.

When we KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Him, He covers our not good enough with His perfection.

For God made [Jesus] Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21

His sacrifice covers our sins with God’s mercy, grace, and love declaring us forgiven and redeemed. And His Spirit works within us transforming us with His presence and truth.

Are you good enough? Advertisers tell you what you need to buy. Society says who you need to know and what you need to do. Some will say you're enough on your own but now it's time to know the truth.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Praising God
For Making Us Good Enough

Father God, Your love overwhelms me. No matter how hard I try, I can never be good enough to earn Your love and saving grace. But Your Word tells me that Your love does not depend on me it is graciously given to me because love is who You are. (1 John 4:8)

Thank you for giving us Your Commands to show us the best way to live with one another. Because we are sinners we will fail and hurt each other. Yet, Your Word tells us how to be blessed through forgiveness and love healing our brokenness and setting us free to love and forgive the people around us.

The enemy wants me to believe that I’m good enough without You and the world tells me that power, popularity, and the right possessions are all I need. Please forgive me for the times I let his lies influence my thoughts and actions.

I praise You for sending Your Son, Jesus. He is not only good enough … He is perfect. He gave Himself as the sinless sacrifice that sets me free from sin and gives me abundant life that lasts forever. (1 John 2:2, John 10:10)

I love you, Lord, and I give myself to You. Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Thank you for changing my life and for declaring me good enough through Christ alone. Amen.

Are you good enough? Advertisers tell you what you need to buy. Society says who you need to know and what you need to do. Some will say you're enough on your own but now it's time to know the truth.

When you feel like you’re not enough, stop and remember…

You are loved by the God of the Universe.

For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation.

Psalm 110:5

And through God’s grace and Jesus’ work on the cross, we are declared good enough when we surrender our lives to Him in faith.

Now I am right with God, not because I followed the law, but because I believed in Christ. God uses my faith to make me right with Him.

Philippians 3:9

So, you and I have everything we need to go out there and live boldly for the Lord. We can trust His plans and purposes confident that we don’t need to compare or compete with anyone else.

Praise God! He claims you as His one-of-a-kind child created for His glory and that is more than enough.

We would love to pray for you.
