There are more than 90,000 books on prayer available today. People want a better prayer life. The interesting thing is that everything we need to know came from God Himself in one Book for Life.

How would you like to bless your prayer life?

First, let’s pause for a minute and consider what an awesome and amazing gift prayer is.

The God of the universe invites us to come to Him with our cares and concerns promising that He will patiently listen and respond in love.

It’s an overwhelming and humbling truth, isn’t it?

I wonder if that’s one of the reasons we’re prone to spending more time trying to learn about prayer than we spend praying.

I searched Amazon and found that there are more than 90,000 books on prayer. Some are books about prayer, some provide written prayers, some are on specific topics, and some are prayer journals.

What if all those books just complicate and confuse us? What if the Bible tells us all we need to know? What if prayer is as simple as pouring our hearts out to God?

David wrote…

O my people, trust in Him at all times.
Pour out your heart to Him,
    for God is our refuge.

Psalm 62:8

With those words in mind, I found…

5 Simple Truths to Bless Your Prayer Life

1. Pray in Private…

When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

Matthew 6:6

2. Pray Together…

“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

Matthew 18:20

3. Pray Persistently…

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

Colossians 4:2

4. Pray Confidently in Faith…

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:16

5. Pray Surrendered…

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.

1 Peter 5:6–7

I believe the truth is our Heavenly Father just wants us to humbly surrender our lives to Him as we talk with Him about everything. He wants us to come alone and together and He wants us to come persistently and confidently trusting that He is faithful to keep His promises.

We don’t need fancy words, a plan, or a formula … we just need to trust His love and talk to Him. Remember—The Father gave His Son. The Son gave His life. And the Spirit gave and continues to give Himself.

That’s love! If God gave it all to save us, won’t He welcome us into the “refuge” of His presence, listen to our prayers, and give us everything He knows we need?

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Asking God to Bless Your Prayer Life

Father, we search and study trying to develop a better prayer life when what You want for us is a life of prayer. You invite us to “come and talk” with You. You promise to listen and respond. You’re never distracted or too busy to pay attention to our praise and pleading.

Thank you, Lord. Oh, how saying thank you doesn’t feel like enough. When I think about who You are and all You’ve done … my heart worships You. Your Word says that the sacrifice You desire from me is a humble and repentant heart.

I ask You to forgive me for all the times I take Your grace, mercy, and love for granted. I get so caught up in my own little world that I fail to SEEK Your will and to live a life of love for Your glory. I am so very sorry.

May I give every moment of my life to You. Please keep me mindful of Your presence so that I might pray persistently. I want to pray privately and with others and I want to pray with confident faith and a fully surrendered heart. I want Your will to be my heart’s desire.

So, I give myself to You and ask You to increase my prayer life until I have a life of prayer. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

There’s one more truth we need to remember to bless our time of prayer and that is to…

Trust God’s love…

When we are confident that God’s love never fails and never ends … we can talk with Him about anything. He is safe … our refuge and strength. He is our assurance and peace.

Who do you want to call first when you get good news? Bad news?

The Father wants to be that person. Run to Him. Talk with Him. Trust Him.

These quotes inspired me and I thought they might bless you, too…

“Prayer is the nearest approach to God and the highest enjoyment of Him that we are capable of in this life.” ~ William Law

“Prayer is an acknowledgment that our need of God’s help is not partial but total.” ~ Alistair Begg

“Prayer is a sincere, sensible, affectionate pouring out of the soul to God, through Christ, in the strength and assistance of the Spirit, for such things as God has promised.” ~ John Bunyan

I am sorry I am a day late! But wanted to thank you for these beautiful reflections for our prayer life. Does not every relationship of any value to us begin with opening our hearts, spending time together, talking and listening, getting to know, learning to trust…I liken this to our prayer life! It is the same essence to finding the true and most valuable friendship we can ever cultivate here on earth…our prayer life with God! “Prayer is not eloquence of speech, but earnestness of the soul.” I love you, Deb! So thankful for cultivating my valued friendship with you!
