Why It’s Important for You to Give God Glory

Sharing is caring!

The Bible says, "Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God." What does it mean to give God glory? How do you live for God's glory? We're taking a closer look to apply God's Word to our lives.

Paul wrote…

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

What does it mean for us to “give God glory”.

God is glorious!

Nothing you or I can do or say will make Him more glorious and yet, we are told to glorify Him in all things.

We’re told to:

  • Thank and praise God.
  • Honor and respect Him.
  • Cherish and adore Him.
  • And take delight in Him.

Psalm 115 begins…

Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
but to Your name goes all the glory
for Your unfailing love and faithfulness.

Psalm 115:1

It takes humility to pray those words. It takes humility to live for someone else’s glory. We all love to be thanked, praised, honored, respected, cherished and adored. So, it can be tempting to want to live for ourselves . . . to be people-pleasers so we are the ones who receive praise and honor and all the “glory.”

But we were created to give God glory. Not because He needs it; He already is and has been forever glorious. We were created to glorify an all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present, God—Creator, Savior, and Life-giving Spirit who alone is worthy of being glorified.

John wrote of the elders in heaven falling before the throne saying…

“You are worthy, O Lord our God,
to receive glory and honor and power.
For You created all things,
and they exist because You created what You pleased.”

Revelation 4:11

He also wrote…

I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

Revelation 5:12 (NKJV)

Can you imagine? Whether you and I choose to glorify God or not … He is now and He forever will be glorified.

But pause for a minute … picture the heavenly scene above as you read these words from Isaiah …

Bring all who claim me as their God,
for I have made them for my glory.
It was I who created them.’”

Isaiah 43:7

You and I were created for God’s glory! We matter to Him! He cares about us and for us. So, we can trust Him to give us everything we need to live for His glory.

Psalm 115 goes on to tell us a couple of reasons why we can confidently trust God…

All you who fear the Lord, trust the Lord!
He is your helper and your shield.

Psalm 115:11

He is our Helper…

God has said,
“I will never fail you.
    I will never abandon you.”
So we can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper,
so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?”

Hebrews 13:5–6

He is our Savior, Shield, Place of Safety, and the Power that Saves…

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
    and my place of safety.
He is my refuge, my Savior,
the One who saves me from violence.

2 Samuel 22:2b–3

Those are just a few of the many reasons we have to give God glory.

He made us. He saved us. He helps and protects us. He will never fail us or abandon us.

Yes! He is worthy!

So, I’m challenging myself and I challenge you too. Let’s personalize and memorize the first verse of Psalm 115…

“Not to [me], O Lord, not to [me], but to Your name goes all the glory for Your unfailing love and faithfulness.”

The Bible says, "Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God." What does it mean to give God glory? How do you live for God's glory? We're taking a closer look to apply God's Word to our lives.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Give God Glory in All Things

Father God, You alone are worthy of all my worship and praise. You have searched me and known me. (Psalm 139:1) You knit me together in my mother’s womb. (Psalm 139:13) Your thoughts about me are precious and cannot be numbered. (Psalm 139:17) You go before me and follow me and place your hand of blessing on my head. (Psalm 139:5)

You are full of unfailing love and ready to forgive. (Psalm 86:5) You are Creator and Redeemer—the Lord who made all things. (Isaiah 44:24) You are my Helper and Protector. (Psalm 115:9) And You are the One who comforts me. (John 14:16 AMP)

You are worthy. I pray for the ability to glorify You in all I do and say. I pray that I will enthusiastically praise and worship You with all my heart, that I will cherish and adore You by loving You and those You place around me, and that I will honor and respect You with every part of my being.

Teach me Your ways and give me everything I need to trust and obey You. I humbly give myself to You for You are life and love to me.

I pray that with Your Spirit’s help, I will forever proclaim … “Not to [me], O Lord, not to [me], but to Your name goes all the glory for Your unfailing love and faithfulness.” In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Let’s close with a couple of quotes about glorifying God…

“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” ~ John Piper

“Our high and privileged calling is to do the will of God in the power of God for the glory of God.” ~ J. I. Packer

I believe this quote from R. C. Sproul explains perfectly what it means to give God glory…

We do not segment our lives, giving some time to God, some to our business or schooling, while keeping parts to ourselves. The idea is to live all of our lives in the presence of God, under the authority of God, and for the honor and glory of God. That is what the Christian life is all about.

May God be with you and bless you as you make it your heart’s desire to live for God’s glory.

We would love to pray for you.

Not to me, Lord, but all to you! Thanks, Deb, for today’s inspiration.
    Blessings!

  2. Kathy Francescon says:

Amen, Deb, Amen! I give God the glory for all and everything! For HIS glory only is the reason we and
    this world even exists!
Revelation 4:11 THOU art worthy, O LORD, to receive glory and honor and power: for THOU hast created all things, and for THY pleasure they are and were created.
God is Sovereign over all! All GLORY, all PRAISE, all HONOR, goes only to the HOLY FATHER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH!
And so loved Fridays post too! Yes, we are to be good stewards for this beautiful earth! And I try my best to do my part! But I am sick of the powers that be, pushing climate change on all of us, while they fly around in their jets! One trip they make puts out more carbon than my car in ten years! GOD CONTROLS ALL THE WEATHER AND ALL THE HOT AND COLD TEMPERATURES!
Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and THE EARTH WILL WAX OLD (grow old, wear out) like a garment…
When GOD decides its over, it will be over!!! No matter what man thinks he can do to change the climate or anything else, GOD controls it all!!
Hallelujah and Praise God! I give all GLORY TO MY LORD AND SAVIOR, the KING OF KINGS!

    1. I missed you, last week. So, glad you’re back and that you enjoyed a nice visit with your family. He alone is worthy … I love that verse from Revelation. All of creation was made for God’s pleasure. Oh, how I want to intentionally live my life to please Him. What a wonderful God we love and serve. Blessings and hugs, dear friend!

  3. A beautiful post, as usual Deb! One of my favorite hymns is “Great is His faithfulness!” Yes, to God be the glory and more of HIM less of me!
Blessings to you my friend and to the Rev.

Blessed afternoon, dear friend! I love that hymn too!! And it is so true! God is always faithful! I also loved your post on Friday! We took a quick trip to Wilmington, NC this past Thurs. and came back yest. Went to see my nephew and go to great nephews football game! He is a senior and I wanted to see him play his last yr of high school! He is hoping to get a scholarship for college! He is straight A student and they started scouting him last year! If you can’t tell, I am really proud of him! They played Thurs instead of Fri as the tropical storm did hit on Friday morn! Nothing major but too nasty to get out and about! Michael has three kids, three dogs, and his wife, Amber’s birthday was Saturday, so it was quite hectic, but so enjoyed seeing them! We talk often, but hadn’t seen them in a while! God blessed us to go and kept us safe going and coming home the 7 hour drive! I am always so thankful for a safe trip, and give God all the praise and thanksgiving for watching over us! I pray you are doing well and hope you had a good wkend. I really missed corresponding with you and Deb Friday, so wanted to be sure and give you my love and prayers and a big hug today! I sooo hope God will bless you with peace and joy and a feel good, great week ahead, my special and dear friend!

      1. Hey Kathy,
I was so pleased to hear from you and know that you are alright. I was concerned last week. So glad you had time with your family and your nephew and great nephew. I pray that he does get that scholarship. They both sound like fine young men. Also, I am glad you and hubby had a safe trip there and home. I do the same thing when in an automobile. PRAY for safty. People drive so aggresively these days. I don’t do a lot of driving anymore. My sweet man does it all. He is a good driver.
You told me once that you live in East Tennessee. Do you live near mountains? I love the mountains! I love the ocean too, but I confess that mountains are my favorite. They are so stable and so much remind me of God and how stable and steady His love is. And how He is always here for us. So stable and so comforting.
We have been doing okay. I have my moments and tears. I am just so thankful for my other half! He is such a wonderful man and comes from the mose wonderful family. I am grateful to be included with them all.
Yes, I am so thankful too, for you and your friendship and for Deb. Having Christian friends who appreciate one is the best possible type of friendship.
I do hope that you have a good week and stay safe and well. Blessings and hugs to you my very sweet and faithful friend.

    2. Thank you, Sue! That hymn has always been a favorite of mine too! Blessings to you!
