How to Be Sure that God Is Good All the Time

There's a saying that goes, "God is good all the time. All the time God is good." But how can we know for sure that God is good when we live in a world that seems unfair and unjust. We taste and see.

You’ve heard the saying…

God is good, all the time! All the time, God is good!

You’ve probably even said it yourself as you’ve gathered with other people who KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Him.

But I think those words are a sticking point for some. When they look around and see good people face devastation while those who celebrate evil seem to live luxurious lives of ease, they wonder … is God really good?

This verse from Psalm 119 grabbed my attention today…

You are good and do only good;
    teach me your decrees.

Psalm 119:68

How can we know for sure that God is good all the time?

Well, let’s take a look at some things Scripture says about God’s goodness…

O Lord, You are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for Your help.

Psalm 86:5

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us His true word. And we, out of all creation, became His prized possession.

James 1:17–18

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.

Psalm 107:1

God is good! It’s who He is and He cannot deny or go against who He is. Everything He created was originally good. (Genesis 1:31) And after the people He created sinned and brought imperfection to His perfect world, He promised a Savior to give them a good future that lasts forever. (John 3:16)

That first sin was prompted by the enemy of our souls tempting Adam and Eve to doubt God’s goodness and love and he’s still at it today. He jumps up and down shouting, “Look over here at all the things these evil people are getting away with.” Or he makes it personal asking, “How can a good God ask you to go through something like this?”

But look at Paul’s word to the Romans…

We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.

Romans 8:28

Paul who was shipwrecked, beaten, stoned, and imprisoned wrote that God causes everything to work together for His good purposes. Our God takes what the enemy intends for evil and uses it for good.

So, we can pray with confidence…

Do good to Your servant
    according to Your word, Lord.
Teach me knowledge and good judgment,
    for I trust Your commands.

Psalm 119:65–66

And we can proclaim with faith…

Surely Your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23:6

Because … God is good all the time and all the time God is good!

There's a saying that goes, "God is good all the time. All the time God is good." But how can we know for sure that God is good when we live in a world that seems unfair and unjust. We taste and see.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Be Sure that God is Good

Father, You are good! You are gracious, merciful, and loving. You created a perfect world for us and when we gave in to temptation and sinned, You promised Jesus, our Savior, would take the punishment we deserved upon Himself and make all things new.

John wrote: “Then I say a new heaven and a new earth … I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be His people. God Himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then He said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” (Revelation 21:3–5)

Yes, You are good! I KNOW You are good because I have experienced Your goodness in my life. I have seen You keep Your promises. I have received forgiveness through Jesus and I have been comforted, strengthened, and given peace, joy, patience, and so much more through Your Spirit.

Your grace is sufficient. (2 Corinthians 12:9) Your mercy never ends. (Lamentations 3:22) And Your perfect love never fails. (Psalm 143:8) I thank and praise You forever and always. Amen.

There's a saying that goes, "God is good all the time. All the time God is good." But how can we know for sure that God is good when we live in a world that seems unfair and unjust. We taste and see.

Do you remember the following verse from Psalm 34?

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!

Psalm 34:8

And these notes from the Life Application Bible?

“Taste and see” does not mean, “Check out God’s credentials. Instead, it is a warm invitation: “Try this; I know you’ll like it.”

May we sincerely SEEK God and His goodness. May we invite those we love to SEEK Him as well. Because when we experience the Lord’s goodness, KNOWing, TRUSTing, and LOVING and OBEYing Him becomes the desire of our hearts.

God be with you and bless you now and always!

We would love to pray for you.

  3. Very current thinking. I think that this question has been present since the moment when humanity became aware of the existence of God. You ask how we know that God is always good and then suggest that we look at the Bible. However, your selection of quotes was very biased, for God’s sake! It’s not that you are against God, if you were, I wouldn’t have read your article and commented on it. I deeply believe in the existence of the Christian God, but I don’t think that from the Bible and from real life it in any way follows that he is only good . If we follow the Bible, we first find that there was a rebellion against God in creation, that he threw the fallen angels to earth. And then he created the lower being MAN on earth. One was on earth and in it was a serpent – a fallen angel. This led the poor lower creature of man into disobedience. How could God do this and expect a lower human being to be able to resist a higher being-a fallen angel? In short, from the very beginning, man was placed in an extremely unfavorable and, given the predicted consequences/death/incorrect position. So that I won’t go on too long, throughout the entire Bible there are records of how brutally God intervened with punishments in human history, how cruelly he tested people and even colluded with Satan/Job’s book, etc./. Even Christ was severely tested, if he endured without sin, it must be taken into account that he was not only an ordinary man but also one with God. I think that we can criticize in one direction or another, we can also criticize God, but it does us no good. All that remains for us is to try to be as good and honest as possible in this life and to trust Jesus Christ that it will be better in eternity. Greetings and all good! Božidar

    1. Božidar, thank you for visiting and for taking the time to read the entire post and leave a comment. I also appreciate your thoughtfulness in your words. I agree that this is a question that people have discussed forever. I understand where you believe the verses I shared are biased; however, several of them were written by individuals who faced much suffering and yet did not blame God. Your comment on the Bible and/or life not showing that God is only good must not lead us to the opposite conclusion because He is also righteous and just. Sin deserves punishment. Also, I disagree that God set people up from the beginning. He gave us the freedom to choose because He wanted us to freely know, love, trust, and obey Him. We give in to temptation. That is not God’s fault. We deserve God’s rejection and eternal punishment. But that goes to your last comment…

“All that remains for us is to try to be as good and honest as possible in this life and to trust Jesus Christ that it will be better in eternity.” We can’t be good and honest enough to spend eternity in heaven with Jesus. We have to depend on Him completely. He lived among us, died for us, and rose again to give us the gift of complete forgiveness and life eternally with Him. He is God’s gift to us. We can to anything to earn it and we don’t deserve it. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus. Paul wrote – But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) (Ephesians 2:4–5)

That in itself shows me that God is good all the time. Thanks again for joining our conversation. May God bless you now and always.
