When You Need God’s Protection – Ask, Seek, Knock

It's easy to take God's protection for granted. But what happens when He withholds His protection and allows people to face the consequences of their idolatry and sin. We're taking a closer look...

What happens when God’s protection is withdrawn from a nation, tribe, or individual?

People are naturally sinful. In our human nature, individually and collectively we are prone to being distracted by worldly temptations and desires. We’re also prone to being crowd-following sheep. So, throughout history as the masses go so goes the individual.

If sin is no longer identified as sin . . . people go their own way and their own way is sinful.

God chose the nation of Israel as His own special people. But they collectively turned to idolatry and sin over the years rather than trusting and obeying Him.

Finally, after years and years of patience, they faced their enemies without God’s protection and their enemies prevailed…

Asaph wrote Psalm 74 after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. as a plea for God to help and restore…

Remember that we are the people You chose long ago,
the tribe You redeemed as Your own special possession!
And remember Jerusalem, Your home here on earth.
Walk through the awful ruins of the city;
see how the enemy has destroyed Your sanctuary.

They thought, “Let’s destroy everything!”
So they burned down all the places where God was worshiped.

Psalm 74:2–3, 8

The Life Application Bible Notes add…

“When enemy armies defeated Israel, they sacked and burned Jerusalem, trying to wipe out every trace of God. This has often been the response of people who hate God. Today many are trying to eliminate God from our public life and particularly from our schools . . . but don’t become discouraged when others appear to make great strides in removing all trace of God. They cannot eliminate His presence among believers.”

God is living and active in our world today just as He always has been. He may allow a season of defeat to remind people of their need for Him. As His children, we must not give up or give in. We are given a fresh opportunity to go to Him in prayer…

  • ASK – talk with God about our needs.
  • SEEK – persistently pursue Him . . . get to know His heart and His will.
  • KNOCK – in humble repentance go to the throne room door again and again in the name of Jesus.

Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

Matthew 7:7

Then let your light shine

Let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 (NIRV)

Use a season of defeat to remind people of their need for the Lord. Tell and show people the difference God has made in Your life. Be a living example of the peace that passes understanding, the courage and strength to face giants, the joy that knows no bounds, and the hope that never fails.

And pray that everyone you meet will want to KNOW Jesus because they see the difference His love has made in you.

May we all remember that the Lord has not forgotten us and may we say with confidence…

Yet, from long ago God has been my king, the one who has been victorious throughout the earth.

Psalm 74:12 (GW)
It's easy to take God's protection for granted. But what happens when He withholds His protection and allows people to face the consequences of their idolatry and sin. We're taking a closer look...

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for God’s Protection

Father, You created us because You wanted a relationship with us and You created a beautiful world as our home. We turned the perfect place You made into a place of sin and idolatry. We worshipped Your creation and our own idealogy instead of praising and honoring only You. Please forgive us, Father.

Your Word says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12) Your plan was for nations to SEEK You . . . to know the blessing of Your presence. (Acts 17:27) You want people to humble themselves, acknowledge and repent of their collective sins, pray, and SEEK You. And You say that when we do, You will heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Oh Lord, we need our nation to be healed. We have failed to follow Your will. We have openly excused, accepted, and even promoted the things that You call sin. Please help us. Turn hearts and minds back to You. May our nation recognize the foolishness and futility of disobeying Your commands. We come to You with humble repentant hearts. Please forgive us and move in us so that we might SEEK, TRUST, and OBEY You.

Please unite Your children with Your TRUTH. Strengthen us to follow Your will. Give us the courage we need to let the light of Your love shine through us. We trust that You are here with us and we thank and praise You with all our hearts. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

It's easy to take God's protection for granted. But what happens when He withholds His protection and allows people to face the consequences of their idolatry and sin. We're taking a closer look...

One of the prayers of my heart is that followers of Jesus would unite in His name and show the world the truth of His love. I pray that we might come together by the power of the Holy Spirit, humble ourselves, repent, and surrender our lives and our nation to God’s healing power.

The enemy wants us to focus on our differences but God wants us to focus on all that He has done for us through Jesus.

We need God’s protection in our hearts and in His church.

Paul wrote…

I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

1 Corinthians 1:10

May we ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK that we might be united in faith and together shine His light to a world that needs God’s protection and love so very much.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. I was reading the book of Hosea just this past week and it was about God’s anger with Israel. It is sad to me that so many people in this world today forget or won’t acknowledge that God is God, maker of Heaven and Earth and all that is in it. But, we do see that this is not the only time this has happened. I know that there is going to come a day when God has had enough of this.
I pray for our Nation and for a leadership that remembers who the “Great I Am” is!! We seem to be living in a fallen world for sure.
I am thankful that God is in my life, that I have the Holy Spirit and I believe in Jesus Christ. I am thankful that I had parents and a grandfather who raised me this way.
God is ever faithful, no matter what fears we have or what we go through. And since anxiety is some thing I live with frequently, I am thankful that God is always here with me, always protecting me.
I am truly grateful and thankful for this website and you, Deb, and the wonderful folks in this circle. And I am thankful for your friendship and Kathy’s. Thank you both for your prayers. I am praying for y’all too.

    1. God is faithful! Amen, Sue. My prayer is that more will realize the blessing of knowing and loving Him. He is the One who is able to unite us and guard our hearts and minds from the attacks of the one who is constantly working to defeat and divide. We’re so glad you are part of what we do here, Sue. You are truly a blessing. God be with you!

    2. Kathy Francescon says:

I loved your comments this morning, Sue! And I too am so thankful that I was blessed to be raised in a generation of parents and grandparents, neighbors, friends, that loved and lived for God. We were raised in church and were taught to revere God and the sanctity of His Holy Name. I can’t imagine life without my Lord and Savior! I too, have dealt with anxiety and depression and it is God that I cling to, to get me through those dark and difficult times. He is with us always, even though sometimes it doesn’t feel like He is…that is when I remember all He has brought me through before and I know He will again. May God’s radiance light your way through this difficult time. Praying for you, sweet friend and comrade!

      1. Thank you Kathy! You are such a blessing to me and to the other folks who follow this blog. I am grateful that Deb encourages us all to stay in touch and support each other. Isn’t she a wonderful blessing too, to us all.
I am going to get through this time. God has always been there and he has gotten me through lots of stuff. This whole situation is so needless and it hurts. I just know that God has a purpose for it and what ever happens, I am going to come out a stronger person. I appreciate the prayers. They help and I can feel them. Godly people know!!
You are so sweet and so kind. It shows in all that you write and your wisdom. I am thankful for your dear friendship.

      2. Kathy,

I too, am praying for you. You are truly the BEST!!!

  2. Worldly powers are relentlessly trying to divide us, Deb, that’s for sure. Let us always seek what unites us instead of what keeps us apart. With God’s help, we can do it!
    Blessings!

    1. Beautifully said, Martha. Seeking and focusing on what unites us is so important. The enemy wants to divide but with God’s help, we can be one in Christ. May we set our hearts and minds on Him. Blessings!

  3. Kathy Francescon says:

Amen to Sue’s and Martha’s comments! Both are so very true! Our nation seems to have fallen so far, so fast! Reading Romans 1:21-32
is like reading the headline news of today! I am so praying for our nation, our leaders, and our churches. I so loved your earnest and beautiful prayer, Deb. The world is so in need of God’s protection and love. And His correction! I pray not to give in to despair and give up, but to inspire and take up! Take up my cross and follow Him…
Blessings to all the brave warriors and dear friends, you have brought together here, Deb! The friendships and encouragements we share are so needed and so appreciated! Prayers and love to everyone!

    1. Thank you, Kathy! I’m joining you all in praying for God to heal and restore our nation. God’s blessings!

  4. Ana Cordova says:

Amén! Indeed we need to remain United in God’s glory. The only way we can defeat the enemy is by God giving us the Holy Spirit in our hearts to love, peace, patience, faith, and humbleness. So we can love our enemy and have compassion for others.
Blessings Deb and all who follow this podcast.

    1. Amen, Ana! Thank you for stating it so beautifully. God bless you!
