The Truth about God’s Unfailing Promises With People

God made unfailing promises that if Israel trusted and obeyed Him, He would bless them. But like us, they were inconsistent. Some trusted. Some didn't. And no one obeyed perfectly. We need Jesus...

God made covenants with Abraham, Moses, and all Israel … unfailing promises that if they trusted and obeyed Him, He would bless them. But like us, they were inconsistent. Some trusted. Some didn’t. And no one obeyed perfectly.

So, God sent His Son and gave a New Covenant through Jesus. He promised that through faith and repentance, anyone could be forgiven and free forever. Still, many Jews liked the old way better, wanting to trust their self-righteousness through obedience and traditions.

So, Paul addressed the following question in Romans 11…

I ask, then, has God rejected His own people, the nation of Israel?

Romans 11:1

No! God did not reject them. He is merciful … the same yesterday, today, and forever. Many Jews rejected Him by rejecting Jesus. Like you and me, they were and are sinners in need of a Savior.

Paul said it like this…

No, God has not rejected His own people, whom He chose from the very beginning.

Romans 11:2

He went on to write about the time Elijah believed he was the only one who still believed God’s unfailing promises. But God said…

“No, I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal!”

Romans 11:4b

And Paul assured those Roman believers…

It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God’s grace—His undeserved kindness in choosing them.

Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But He wanted His own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves.

Romans 11:5, 11

All believers are beneficiaries of God’s grace.

And God wants His grace, mercy, and love to be so clearly seen in them that those who have “stumbled” (Romans 9:32) will want what they have. He wants everyone to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Jesus. He is the “free and undeserved” gift of God’s grace.

The LAB Notes add…

“Do you think it’s easier for God to love you when you’re good? Do you secretly suspect that God chose you because you deserved it? …If you ever think this way, you don’t entirely understand that salvation is by grace, a free gift. It cannot be earned, in whole or in part; it can only be received with thankfulness and praise.”

The enemy is still working to get us to ignore God’s unfailing promises. He wants us to cling to our traditions and self-righteousness.

Whenever I see people arguing over their religious traditions and doctrinal differences, it saddens me. I’ll admit there are times when I scroll through social media and want to scream in all caps, “STOP IT!”

If we’re not pointing to our need for forgiveness through Jesus and grace through faith, we’re missing the point.

Paul said that some Jews, like him (and I would add all the disciples), “have remained faithful by God’s grace—His undeserved kindness for choosing them.” And that’s God’s desire for everyone. He chose to send Jesus for all of us. But because God gave us free will, we can either receive His gracious gift or reject it.

Praise God! The Spirit makes it our hope and prayer that everyone will receive the gift of Jesus with gratitude and love..

For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more wonderful. It will be life for those who were dead!

Romans 11:15

The more I read God’s Word, the more I see God’s love on every page. He is Elohim, the Creator who sustains everything. He is Yahweh, the Word made Flesh … Jesus. And Paraclete, the Comforter, Counselor, and Advocate … the Holy Spirit.

He is grace, mercy, and love for Jews and Gentiles. He is the Lord of All who keeps every one of His unfailing promises!

God made unfailing promises that if Israel trusted and obeyed Him, He would bless them. But like us, they were inconsistent. Some trusted. Some didn't. And no one obeyed perfectly. We need Jesus...

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Thanking God for
His Unfailing Promises to Everyone

Father God, we thank and praise You for who You are. You had no beginning and will have no end. You are the Sovereign King of kings and Lord of lords. You are Elohim, Yahweh, and Paraclete … One God, Three Persons.

You are love. You created us in love, saved us through love, and sustain us with love. And Your unfailing promises last forever.

By grace, You created us to love and be loved. You gave us free will to experience the blessing of love in all its fullness. Because You are love, You want everyone to be saved and know the truth.

Some question why you gave us the freedom to reject. Others question Your rejection. But You are LOVE, and Your Covenants are full of love, hope, and promise. Your mercy and grace are evident in all You do.

Thank you for always wanting Your best for every person on earth. And that best can only come through Your Son, Jesus. Please help us focus on Your unfailing promises. Help us show the world the blessing of KNOWing, LOVING, and TRUSTing You. By the power of Your Spirit, may everyone want a relationship with You because they see You in us.

I pray people will see You in me. Help me love well and live for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

God made unfailing promises that if Israel trusted and obeyed Him, He would bless them. But like us, they were inconsistent. Some trusted. Some didn't. And no one obeyed perfectly. We need Jesus...

I love these words about God’s unfailing promises…

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and Your dominion endures through all generations.
The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises
and faithful in all He does.

Psalm 145:13

When God promises, He’s not saying, I’ll try. He means, I can and I will.” ~ James MacDonald

So, may we faithfully pray for Jews and Gentiles. May we all forever trust the One who forever keeps His unfailing promises.
