Psalm 49 begins by telling us to Listen and Pay Attention. What's so important? The futility of focusing on things that the Lord says cannot last rather than on God's grace and redeeming love.

Listen to this, all you people!
Pay attention, everyone in the world!
High and low,
    rich and poor—listen!

Psalm 49:1–2

God inspired the writer of this Psalm to begin by saying…

This is important! Pay attention!

What is it that God wants us to KNOW?

That worldliness is futile!

He wants us to KNOW that power, possessions, and popularity can’t save us. It may make a difference for a moment but there is nothing this world has to offer that can save us or last eternally.

No one can ever pay enough to live forever.

Psalm 49:8b–9a

Only God can redeem our souls!

But as for me, God will redeem my life.
He will snatch me from the power of the grave.

Psalm 49:15

We don’t deserve God’s redeeming grace.

God, in His grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding His blood.

Romans 3:24–25a

We can’t buy it.

Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy.

1 Timothy 6:17

We can’t earn it.

God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

Ephesians 2:8–9

There is nothing in this world that can save us from the eternal punishment we deserve because of our sins.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:23

No amount of money. No amount of good works. No amount of praise or adulation from people.

Only Jesus!

Yet God, in His grace, freely makes us right in His sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding His blood.

Romans 3:24–25

So, God says, “Listen, pay attention!” Living for power, possessions, and popularity is futile. There is only one thing that’s important—one truth that lasts forever…

God graciously gave His Son to make it possible for us to be redeemed.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (ESV)
Psalm 49 begins by telling us to Listen and Pay Attention. What's so important? The futility of focusing on things that the Lord says cannot last rather than on God's grace and redeeming love.

Let’s thank and praise God…

A Prayer Thanking God for His
Grace and Redeeming Love

Father, I need Your grace and redeeming love. I am a sinner. I want to honor and obey You with everything I do and say but I fail. I want to make wise choices when I’m tempted to pursue power, possessions, and popularity. But I’m inconsistent. Please forgive me. I do things You call sin and don’t do things that You command.

And no matter how badly I want to fix it, how much I want to repay my debt… I can’t. I can’t buy it. I can’t earn it. There is nothing I can do to deserve it. But Your love is so high, wide, deep, and long that You sent Jesus to suffer my punishment for me. He paid the price for my weaknesses and failures.

I believe that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I have hope because of Your grace and redeeming love. I have peace knowing that I am forgiven. And I anticipate that through Jesus, I will live forever in Your presence.

Paul wrote that I have been “bought with a price so glorify God with Your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:20) I want to glorify You with my whole life. I want to live every moment with gratitude. I want to trust and follow Your will.

Please work in me and help me SEEK, KNOW, LOVE, TRUST, and OBEY You. You are worthy. I love you. I thank you. I praise you. I give myself to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Psalm 49 begins by telling us to Listen and Pay Attention. What's so important? The futility of focusing on things that the Lord says cannot last rather than on God's grace and redeeming love.

When the enemy of our souls tempts us to believe we need more of the world . . . more power, more possessions, and more popularity, he’s lying!

There is nothing we can do to redeem ourselves.

In this life – Leadership can’t last. Treasures don’t last. Fame doesn’t last. Nothing lasts eternally.

But God…

God promises eternal life. Life that lasts forever . . . a future filled with hope, an eternity in His kingdom and His presence.

That is His redeeming love.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by His great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

1 Peter 1:3–4

May God bless you and assure you of His grace and redeeming love.

    1st Corinthians 15:57
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Have an “only Jesus” victorious day!!

Hi Deb, your devotional today meets me right where I am:
    a) humbled as I’m reminded that no fame as a Christian singer in my church will bless me more than a few moments-
that my chief and highest goal needs to always be to point to Jesus and his saving power and grace- whether in song or in speech.
    b) desire to serve my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ more selflessly in sharing the truths of his gospel and salvation message, no matter the situation I am in-sick or healthy (giving thanks as I have been struggling with a medical situation that is finally appearing to show hope).
    c) need to heed and act sooner upon the Holy Spirit’s promptings… too easy for me to dig in my heels out fear of reprisals for speaking out for the oppressed.

Thank you for your tireless and loving efforts with your blog and devotional messages as I have come to enjoy and be blessed by them!
    Beth

    1. What a beautiful testimony, Beth! Thank you so very much for sharing it with us here. May the Lord be with you, encourage you, and give you everything you need as you love and trust Him. God bless you!

  3. Where, oh, where would we be without God’s gracious and redeeming love?
    Blessings, Deb!

    1. Absolute truth, Martha! Oh, how we need Him and the covering of His gracious love. Blessings!

  4. Amen Indeed!! I have lived long enough to know that material things, money and even some friendships don’t last forever!! I have lived long enough to know that God and ONLY GOD, who sacrificed his only SON, to pay the penalty for our sins, is the only sure fired love we can depend on. My trials have and are teaching me more about trusting in God. Grateful is a word that doesn’t even seem big enough to express how I feel about God. I am so grateful and so thankful that I have him in my life and have the desire to know him more and more.
Blessing to you, my sweet friend and to the sweet ladies who are in this circle.

    1. I agree, Sue. Grateful does seem insufficient to explain our response to His abundant blessings. My daily prayer is to give myself fully to Him in response to all He has done and continues to do for me. God be with you and bless you, dear friend!

  8. Lynn Marie says:

    Romans 7:15-20
    New International Version
15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”
My constant sin-prodding is the word “clearance”. Since He has blessed me with everything I need, everything, in order to fight the “sparkly” things of this world I am reminded to face them and say, “need or want”?, and then click the “X” in the corner and move on. Thank you, Deb, through the Holy Spirit, for reminding me that my most important blessing is all that I really Need; my Lord and Savior, and yes in Him and in His Holy Spirit I am also given. Shame on me and repentant in the reminder, and all praise and honor to Him Who not only forgives me, but intercedes for me. Blessings to you.

    1. I love thinking about the word “clearance” as a motivation to turn to God in repentance asking Him to clear us of our sins through Jesus. We need His grace and redeeming love every day in every way. Thanks so much for visiting and for joining the conversation. God bless you!
