We will never forget the flight when our plane was hit by lightning. I'd love to tell you about it and some of the things we took away from that experience... #Lightning #Unforgettable #Blessings

The Lord made the earth by His power,
and He preserves it by His wisdom.
With His own understanding
    He stretched out the heavens.
When He speaks in the thunder,
    the heavens roar with rain.
He causes the clouds to rise over the earth.
He sends the lightning with the rain
and releases the wind from His storehouses.

Jeremiah 10:12–13

Have you ever stood outside and watched the sky turn dark and flashes of lightning ribbon through the clouds as a thunderstorm rolls in?

I have to admit that those moments make me feel incredibly small and insignificant.

Thunder and lightning make us aware of the power of our Creator.

And I’ll never forget the night we felt the power of lightning up close and personally.

Years ago, we were flying home to St. Louis from Florida with a layover in Atlanta, Georgia.

We were still gaining altitude from the Atlanta take-off and starting to relax for the flight ahead. But the feeling of relaxation vanished when suddenly . . . our plane was hit by lightning.

The noise was incredibly loud. The entire plane flashed with light. The plane felt like it was about to explode . . . as the feeling of electricity surged through our bodies.

We continued to feel the power surge…

Then it was quiet.

When it was safe and we were through the worst of the storm, our flight attendant walked through the cabin to check on everyone.

She was stunned also and told us that she had never experienced anything like that in 18 years of flying.

A consultant for Boeing was sitting in the row behind us and joined the conversation, saying it was a first for him, too. And we all nodded as they stated that they hoped to never encounter anything like it again.

As we got off the plane in St. Louis we noted four things we wanted to remember from that momentous occasion:

  • Our awe and amazement at the power of God’s creation.
  • Our thankfulness for God’s protection.
  • Our awareness of how fragile this life is.
  • And, our overwhelming joy at the reminder of God’s grace, mercy, and love.

A Prayer Thanking God for Creation,
Lightning, and Protection

Father, Thank you for gifting us with this beautiful world. Your creation is filled with variety, colors, shapes, and sizes. We enjoy the sun, moon, stars, creatures beyond our imagination, mountains, rivers, lakes, and so much more. And all of it came about through the power of Your Word.

Please forgive us, Father, for taking your creation for granted. We too often look to the created rather than to You, the Creator. We are so very sorry. You are Lord God All-powerful.

The lightning that flashes across the sky demonstrates Your glory, majesty, and power.

David wrote, “Out of the brightness of His presence came flashes of lightning.” (2 Samuel 22:13) “The Lord’s voice makes lightning flash.” (Psalm 22:13) And Matthew wrote, “When the Son of Man comes, He will be seen by everyone, like lightning flashing from the east to the west.” (Matthew 24:27)

I thank you for who You are and for all You do. You are with us. You protect us. You provide for us. When we SEEK You above all else . . . You give us everything we need. I thank you for protecting us through the storms of life. I thank you for Your grace, mercy, and love. Please guide me and help me live for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

One more thing…

Before we got off the plane, the consultant to Boeing promised all of us that he would “high-five” the engineers who designed the aircraft that held together that evening.

And Rev and I are certainly thankful for them, but our personal prayers of thanksgiving go to THE All-powerful Engineer and Creator – He made all things and offers LIFE to all who place their hope and trust in Him.

So…

Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting Him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promise.

Hebrews 10:22–23

May the One who controls the wind and waves, thunder and lightning be with you and bless you now and always.
