Jesus said…
“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”
John 5:24
What is eternal life and how does it transform today?
When I taught kindergartners, we described eternal life like this…
“Living with Jesus forever and ever and ever and ALWAYS!”
Got questions shares the following…
“A common New Testament word for “eternal” is aiónios, which carries the idea of quality as well as quantity.”
The “eternal life” Jesus gives to those who “listen to [His] message and believe in God” is a life lived forever in the presence of the Triune God who loves us perfectly. Can you imagine? That sounds like unimaginable quality that lasts forever.
British evangelist Major Ian Thomas wrote…
“Eternal life is not a peculiar feeling inside! It is not your ultimate destination, to which you will go when you are dead. If you are born again, eternal life is that quality of life you possess right now.”
Knowing and loving Jesus is the truth that transforms life today.
Knowing the quality and quantity of eternal life through faith in Jesus the Son of God enables us to look at today’s struggles with a hope-filled perspective.
It is the peace and hope that transform today!
Are you discouraged? Doubtful? Afraid? Hopeless? Disappointed? Upset? Angry?
Jesus says, “Those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.“
We don’t have to wait until we walk through the door from this life to the next to experience the life Jesus offers. He wants us to know and enjoy that quality of life today.
Oh sure, we will still have “trials and sorrows.” Jesus said…
“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.” (John 16:33)
That’s why we must never forget the beginning and end of that verse.
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth, you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
That’s the message that transforms today. Through Jesus, we have peace, hope, and joy to view life beyond today’s problems and pain to the “quality” of life that lasts forever and ever and ever and ALWAYS!
Jesus continued…
“I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. The Father has life in Himself, and He has granted that same life-giving power to His Son.”
John 5:25–26
We can give our discouragement, doubt, fear, disappointment, and every pain and problem to the One who came to give us a rich and satisfying life that lasts forever. (John 10:10)
Let’s pray…
A Prayer to Listen to Jesus
for Eternal Life
Heavenly Father, thank you for Your grace, mercy, and love given and evidenced through the life of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. He taught people the Truth about who You are and all You desire for them. He shared Your wisdom and promises giving guidance and hope to all who listened to Him.
That is my prayer, Father. I want to listen to and trust Jesus’ message and everything He taught about You.
He promised eternal life to all who believe. He promised the forgiveness of sins and the blessing of transformed lives full of peace today and hope for the future. He told us we would experience burdens but promised to help us carry them. And He promised that by Your grace, You give us everything we need.
How can I ever begin to thank you? Through Jesus, You have changed my life today and eternally. I give myself to You. When I am discouraged, afraid, upset, or hopeless You are my courage, hope, and peace.
You are my forever and ever and ever and ALWAYS! You are my everything. In the precious name of Jesus, who makes all things possible. Amen.
Charles Spurgeon wrote…
“Saving faith is an immediate relation to Christ, accepting, receiving, resting upon Him alone, for justification, sanctification, and eternal life by virtue of God’s grace.”
We don’t know the details of the eternal life we have been promised but we do know that we will be with Jesus, the One who loved us so much He gave everything for us.
He promised that through His Spirit, He would never leave us or forsake us. He promised to help us carry life’s burdens. And He promised that when everything is ready, He will come and take us home … that is perfect love!
May we “listen to [Jesus’] message and believe in God who sent Him” because He loves us more than we can imagine. He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” and our source of faith, hope, and love.
We would love to pray for you.

I had no idea that you taught the little ones, Deb. I love what they learned about eternal life through the saying you taught and repeated with them. Yes, eternity is beautiful in the here and now and in the forever. Blessings!
Thanks, Martha! I taught Kindergarten for a couple of years, and 2nd and 3rd Grade. I loved teaching but also loved being able to stay home with my kiddos. Have a wonderful weekend. HUGS!
