Why It’s Important to Pause, Pray, and Remember

Sharing is caring!

When you are impatient and weary of waiting on God—pause, pray, and remember. Spend time with God, talk with Him, and think about who He is and all He's done.

I was one of those kids whose report cards consistently said . . . “Talks too much!”

Yep, I have definitely been given the gift of gab!

I especially love asking questions that lead to interesting conversations, discussions, and debates. It’s my favorite way to process the world around me and learn new things.

Can you imagine . . . the God of the universe invites you and me to come and talk about life with Him?

David wrote in Psalm 27…

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”

Psalm 27:8a

Our God doesn’t give us a list of rules about prayer. He simply says, “Come and talk.”

And that’s what we see in the Book of Psalms, people simply talking with God about life.

David wrote Psalm 13 while he was in a season of waiting.

O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever?
How long will you look the other way?
How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul,
with sorrow in my heart every day?
How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

Psalm 13:1–2

David talked with God and told Him that he was feeling anxious and impatient about this time of waiting.

And that conversation helped him pause long enough for God to remind him of all the ways He had taken care of him in the past. As David prayed, he remembered that he could trust God’s perfect timing and unfailing love.

But I trust in your unfailing love.
I will rejoice because You have rescued me.
I will sing to the Lord
because He is good to me.

Psalm 13:5–6

Are you struggling with an ongoing problem?

Maybe you’ve prayed repeatedly for:

  • relief from pain.
  • a new job.
  • a child.
  • healing from illness.
  • a relationship restored.
  • freedom from fear.
  • __________.

And you’re growing weary of waiting. Don’t give up! Don’t stop praying!

The Lord is waiting for you to “come and talk” with Him again.

Let’s look at a few verses to help us pause, pray, and remember:

Pause…

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and He turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.

Psalm 40:1–2

Pray…

I took my troubles to the Lord;
I cried out to Him, and He answered my prayer.

Psalm 12:1

As soon as I pray, You answer me;
You encourage me by giving me strength.

Psalm 138:3

Remember what God has done…

But then I recall all You have done, O Lord;
I remember Your wonderful deeds of long ago.

Psalm 77:11

Remember the things I have done in the past.
    For I alone am God!
I am God, and there is none like me.

Isaiah 46:9
When you are impatient and weary of waiting on God—pause, pray, and remember. Spend time with God, talk with Him, and think about who He is and all He's done.

Let’s Pray…

Praying – Father,
Help Me Pause, Pray, and Remember

Father, when I pause to think about who You are, I’m in awe and humbled that You would want me to come and talk with You about my life . . . that You would care that much about me. You already know everything that is happening around me. You are the God who sees me. (Genesis 16:13) You know my thoughts and the attitudes of my heart. (1 Chronicles 28:9) Every day of my life was written in Your book before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:16) You are King of kings and Lord of lords. (1 Timothy 6:15)

I sometimes wonder why You invite my prayers when You already know my past, present, and future. But then I remember that Your Word tells me that You want a relationship with me . . . that through my faith in Jesus, You call me Your child. And I remember that relationships grow through time spent together.

So, I realize that You want me to pause and pray to draw me closer. Your Spirit speaks to my heart in quiet times of prayer. He even speaks to You on my behalf. (Romans 8:26) And it is Your Spirit who reminds me of all that Jesus has done of me, all that He wants me to learn, and all that You want me to do. (John 14:26)

When I come and talk with You . . . waiting is easier because You fill me with peace and give me strength and courage. It is in those quiet moments that You remind me of all the times and ways You have answered my prayers in the past.

Father, please help me pause, pray, and remember that I might fully trust You to give me everything I need one day at a time. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

When you are impatient and weary of waiting on God—pause, pray, and remember. Spend time with God, talk with Him, and think about who He is and all He's done.

Are you growing weary of waiting?

Pause today and spend time with the Lord. Study His Word and talk with Him. His Spirit will help you remember how much you are loved. He will help you remember that in Christ Jesus, you are forgiven, chosen, dearly loved, strong, and redeemed forever and always. You are precious to God.

So, pause and hear Him say…

Remember the things I have done in the past.
    For I alone am God!
I am God, and there is none like me.

Isaiah 46:9
