6 Wonderful Reasons To Praise God When You’re Discouraged

When you're discouraged it's not easy to worship and praise God. The enemy of our souls wants us to focus on our problems, rather than praising the One who promises to give us everything we need.

I read and reread the words of Psalm 47 and I stared at the page and labored over what to write.

Finally, I walked away and started a pot of soup for dinner. As I chopped vegetables and stirred ingredients . . . I paused to pray and ask the Lord to guide me and help me.

And His Spirit whispered and showed me that I was battling with the tempter of our souls.

Psalm 47 began like this…

Come, everyone! Clap your hands!
Shout to God with joyful praise!

Psalm 47:1

Praise God!

I knew I wanted to write about praise but I was fighting discouragement. I wasn’t in a “clap your hands and shout with joyful praise” mood.” My heart was heavy and my spirit low.

Then the Lord reminded me that it wasn’t about me and that my lowest moments are the ones when I need to praise the most. Because praise humbly reminds me that God is worthy of all my praise no matter my circumstances or how I feel.

The Psalmist continued…

For the Lord Most High is awesome.
He is the great King of all the earth.

God has ascended with a mighty shout.
The Lord has ascended with trumpets blaring.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises!

Psalm 47:2, 5–6

Praise God! He is awesome. He is sovereign.

“Praise the Lord! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.”

Revelation 19:6

Praise God! He sent Jesus to suffer my punishment.

God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent His Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him.

John 3:16–17

Jesus died and He is risen.

The angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen.”

Matthew 28:6–6

God cares.

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

1 Peter 5:7

The Lord is present.

For the Lord your God is living among you.
    He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With His love, He will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Zephaniah 3:17

He loves.

I am writing to all who have been called by God the Father, who loves you and keeps you safe in the care of Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:1

When you and I remember who God is . . . all He’s done and continues to do for us, maybe it is in our moments of discouragement that we need to praise Him most of all. Because however we feel, God never changes.

He is faithful and He is trustworthy. We can rely on Him. He is worthy of all our praise.

So, let’s clap our hands and shout His praise.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:3

Praise God!

When you're discouraged it's not easy to worship and praise God. The enemy of our souls wants us to focus on our problems, rather than praising the One who promises to give us everything we need.

Please pray with me.

A Prayer to Help You Praise God When You’re Discouraged

Father, You are worthy of all my praise now and forever. You are good and gracious, loving and kind. And even when I am discouraged . . . You have already given me more than I could possibly deserve. You sent Jesus to pay the penalty for my sinfulness and selfishness.

Since the beginning of time, You have watched over people with care and compassion. You have faithfully kept Your promises. And You have given us everything we need to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You.

The enemy wants me to focus on the things that discourage me. He wants me to believe the lie that You don’t care or that You’re not able. But I know that’s not true. Please forgive me for not coming to You more quickly. You invite me to bring my worries and cares to You because You care . . . because You love me.

And when I remember that the God of the Universe loves me and cares for me, I can let go of my discouragement trusting You to give me strength, courage, and peace. I can clap my hands and shout Your praise because You are my mighty Savior. You are greater than my circumstances and my feelings. You are the awesome King of all the earth. You are my everything. Amen.

When you're discouraged it's not easy to worship and praise God. The enemy of our souls wants us to focus on our problems, rather than praising the One who promises to give us everything we need.

When you’re discouraged, remember that the Lord is forever and always on the throne. He is King over all He created.

Everyone everywhere from every time generation and circumstance will one day bow before the Lord of lords and acknowledge that He is who He says He is. He is our Creator and Savior. He is the Spirit of Life.

We can trust Him. We can rely on His promises. We can give Him our discouragement and lift Him up in praise because He is worthy.

And nothing defeats the enemy and shakes off discouragement like a heartfelt moment of praise.

May the Lord be with you and bless you as you give your cares to Him and lift Him up.
