1 Simple Thanksgiving Prayer to Help You Celebrate with Your Family
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.
It’s fun to gather with those we love and eat until we’re as stuffed as our turkeys but I want to pause and remember the origins of Thanksgiving and thank God for the countless blessings we have received from His grace, mercy, and love.
History.com shares the following in their article on the history of Thanksgiving:
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and Thanksgiving 2022 occurs on Thursday, November 24. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
The colonists had it right! God’s Word tells us about the importance of thanking and praising God.
The Book of Leviticus tells us about bringing a sacrifice of thanksgiving. And King David was known for worshipping God with thanks and praise. Isaiah and Jeremiah lifted up songs of thanksgiving. And the apostles continually told God’s people to thank God.
David wrote…
Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.
1 Chronicles 16:8
And Paul wrote…
Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:20
God has been so very good to us. He is Gracious and Merciful. He is Healer and Hope! He is Life and Love. He has given Jesus for us and if He never gave us another thing . . . we have all the reason we need to thank and praise Him.
Let’s join in a Thanksgiving prayer . . . thanking God as we prepare to celebrate.
A Simple Thanksgiving Prayer
I will praise You, Lord, with all my heart;
Psalm 91:1–2
I will tell of all the marvelous things You have done.
I will be filled with joy because of You.
I will sing praises to Your name, O Most High.
Father God, we thank you!
We thank you for Jesus who gave everything to save us from sin, death, and the power of satan.
We thank you for the gift of Your Spirit who gives us faith and guides us with Your truth.
Thank you for Your grace and mercy.
Thank you for being love in my messy broken life.
Thank you for holding me close when life is hard. Psalm 63:8
Thank you for giving me courage and strength when the battle is fierce. Isaiah 41:10
Thank you for helping me carry my burdens. Matthew 11:28
Thank you for collecting my tears when I grieve. Psalm 56:8
Thank you for caring for my needs every day. Philippians 4:19
Thank you for being the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8
Thank you for having plans for me and for giving me a future filled with hope. Jeremiah 29:11
Thank you for being the Alpha and Omega who is coming soon. Revelation 22:12–13
By Your grace and with Your help, I will praise You every day for the rest of my life.
I will proclaim Your goodness and tell of the marvelous things You have done and continue to do.
I will sing Your praises and celebrate Your grace, mercy, and love.
Father, please give me the boldness I need to follow Your will each day
not because of who I am but because of the Spirit who dwells within me.
You have made me Your child and I will forever thank and praise You.
I praise You with these words of Isaiah…
For the Lord is God,
and He created the heavens and earth
and put everything in place.
He made the world to be lived in,
not to be a place of empty chaos.
“I am the Lord,” He says,
“and there is no other.”
I publicly proclaim bold promises.
I do not whisper obscurities in some dark corner…
I, the Lord, speak only what is true
and declare only what is right.
Isaiah 45:18–19
Lord, You are the promise Giver and the promise Keeper.
I surrender myself and my greatest needs to You.
I pray that You alone will forever be my heart’s desire.
I claim Your promises…
Take delight in the Lord,
Psalm 37:4–5
and He will give you your heart’s desires.
Commit everything you do to the Lord.
Trust Him, and He will help you.
Thank you for my family.
Thank you for my friends.
And thank you for the countless blessings You so generously give me every day.
I love You, Lord!
Amen.

Thank you, Kathy! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration. Blessings!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving my friend. Yes indeed, there are countless things in our life to be thankful for to the Heavenly Father. And so many times I take them for granted. But it’s so encouraging to look back to every area of my life, where His handprints are there. Jesus’ love that held me back from fatal errors, the Holy Spirit Who filled my heart with hope in the most hopeless times, Who never let me give up but urged me on. What a blessing that we have His Spirit to guide us through this crazy world, give us wisdom and discernment. What a wonder how Jesus really DOES keep His promises….gifted us with a roof, a warm home, food, clothing, work. Even when our health failes us, Jesus is there to give strenght, deepen the hope and help us through. He surrounded us with our furry family’s unfailing and unconditional love. He blesses us with the warmth of the sun, with blue sky, birds chirping. So much joy, beauty and marvelous things He gifted us with.
Yes, I have a lot to be thankful for….most of all for Jesus’ everlasting love that doesn’t look at my inequities but only at His sacrifice.
My prayer is for this Day and the coming ones is to be blessed with a deeper love and trust toward God. For a pray that unwavering in Him forever ????????????
Have a blessed Thanksgiving Day
Thank you, Gaby! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. And yes, may we grow in love and trust for the Lord each and every day. Hugs!
