5 Wonderful Reasons to Thank God for the Gift of Laughter
It was our first date. I’d wanted to go out with him for weeks and he’d finally asked me to watch him play in Friday night’s basketball game and wait to go out after.
The evening arrived and I was excited and nervous.
The fact that Rev didn’t have a great game didn’t help my nerves . . . he fouled out in the middle of the fourth quarter and the team lost.
I didn’t know him well enough to know how he’d react. Would he be in a rotten mood? Would he have a hard time shaking it off? As I sat on the bleachers my butterflies grew in intensity.
Then I saw him walking across the gym floor with a big smile on his face. His first words were…
“Come on Deb, let’s go get drunk!”
And I laughed hard because that was never going to happen on our small Christian college campus. Although we both knew it was absurd, Rev was showing me his love of laughter and his ability to move on from disappointing moments.
Laughter filled those first moments of our first date and we’ve been doing our best to find reasons to laugh ever since.
I am so thankful God blessed me with a man who loves to laugh and loves to make me laugh. He says he’s thankful that I’m willing to laugh at his ridiculousness.
Joy and laughter are gifts from God!
I’m thanking you, God, from a full heart, I’m writing the book on your wonders. I’m whistling, laughing, and jumping for joy; I’m singing your song, High God.
Psalm 9:1–2 (MSG)
I believe He loves it when we laugh with joy . . . look at shooting stars, rainbows, funny shaped plants, and quirky looking animals. I believe He loves it when we share laughter with each other. He knows it’s good for us.
Reasons to be Thankful for the Gift of Laughter
- Laughter releases endorphins. It feels great!
- Laughter helps us physically. It relaxes the body, boosts the immune system, lowers stress, and tightens abs.
- Laughter connects us to one another. It strengthens friendship, attracts us to each other, and enhances teamwork.
- Laughter makes a bad day better. Spend time with fun people. Those who encourage you and point you toward hope.
- Laughter is free! It costs absolutely nothing and adds so much!
The common message is that most little children laugh way more often than adults. I guess it makes sense . . . they have fewer responsibilities and typically fewer concerns.
But God tells us to trust Him one day at a time—to let go of the past and trust Him with the future.
But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
Jeremiah 17:7
So, let’s pause today and simply thank God for the gift of laughter!
A Prayer Thanking For for the Gift of Laughter
Father, Thank you for giving us the gift of laughter. Thank you for giving us funny animal antics and wiggly giggly children.
Thank you for the sound of laughter and for the way laughter soothes us. Thank you for being our source of joy and laughter even in moments of heartache. Please forgive us, forgive me, for the times we forget the countless reasons You give us to laugh with joy. Your Spirit generously gives us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22) You make life better.
Please give me everything I need to keep my heart and mind focused on You and all the joy-filled blessings You pour into my life. “Lord, [You are] my strength and shield. I trust [You] with all my heart. [You] help me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” (Psalm 28:7) I burst out with the sound of laughter.
Thank you, Lord, for being the source and reason for so much of my joy and laughter. Amen.
Pause today and look for God’s joy-filled blessings. Then laugh out loud! I believe it gives Him joy and I’m confident it will bless you and make you feel better.
We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” Psalm 126:2
May God be with you and bless you with countless reasons to laugh with joy today and every day.

Hope you’re finding lots of reasons to laugh this weekend. Blessings, my friend!
Deb, I too so loved this post today! I do think sometimes we adults forget all about laughing in the day to day business of life! Sometimes, I find myself watching the “good old clean shows” I’ve seen a thousand times and can still laugh at!! And laughter sure is the best medicine, as they used to say! But, of course God is our first and only ” Best Medicine!” It is hard to laugh sometimes in all that is going on around us and thank you for a reminder that indeed we do need to thank God, for the blessings of all the sweet things that can make us laugh! May the blessing of laughter find you today!! Hugs and love!
Hi, Kathy! I love it! It’s fun to go back and watch those old shows that made us smile and often bring back great memories. And a huge “YES” . . . God is by far our “Best Medicine.” God bless you, my friend!
Thanks for sharing with us how important laughter is. With my busy life I sometimes forget to laugh and have fun and just be with those I love and do life with. Thanks for the reminder!????
Thank you. Sherry! Praying the days ahead are filled with much joy and laughter for you and your family. God bless you!
I loved your devotion for today. My family has always loved to laugh, but it seems the last few years, it’s been more stress and less laughter. I needed this, and to be reminded how much we used to enjoy laughing at things. Will find it again!
Hi Pat. I think that has been true for so many of us. It has been a hard couple of years. Praying that the Lord will help us all find joy and laughter in the days ahead.
I remind myself to enjoy the little things…small wins! It’s been a while since I’ve commented, but still out here enjoying your part of the world…my husband brings the best laughter from me, even in what feels like dark times…focus on the Lord and let the light shine! Thanks Deb.
Hi, Lily! Great to hear from you! Rev and I have been known to laugh in some of the most difficult situations and unpleasant circumstances. Laughter has helped us cling to each other and celebrate God’s blessings even when life is hard. God bless you!
Amidst all the confusion, gloom and doom – what a blessing to be reminded that God wishes us Joy and Laughter!
Bless you< Deb for ALL your (much-needed) blogs!-
And thank God for your companionship on our journeys.
Oh, Mari, thank you for your kind encouragement. I love walking this journey of faith with you all. You bless me more than you can imagine. God bless you!
Right now I need a reason to laugh. My little husky is struggling with epilepsy and while we had it pretty much under control, since yesterday, she had 5 seizures so far in 16 hours. And my vet’s staff just chastized me when I called back 2 hours later that I should have patience.
I prayed to the Lord fervently, reminded Him of His promises, of His love for animals….but right now everything seems to be way too dark to find a reason to laugh.
I know that the circumstances don’t necessarily reflect the Lord’s will, which is the reason that I’m holding on His Cross by my teeth….
I’m so sorry, Gaby. I hope your pup is doing better today. We have a cavapoo and we are crazy about her. She is a great source of laughter in our house. Praying for you and your pup. God bless you!
Deb,
Such a lovely prayer and a good reminder to look for joy. I love being around children because joy and laughter is such a natural part of their existence. Perhaps that is part of the reason Christ told us we need to have the faith of a child.
Blessings,
Tammy
Thank you, Tammy! I’m a huge fan of babies and puppies for the same reason. Praying regularly for childlike faith. Blessings and hugs!
