To Be Kind

It can take more strength to keep your opinions to yourself than it does to give them a voice.

How strong are you?

This week we’re looking at self-control, especially when it comes to words.

Solomon said, Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. And fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions” Proverbs 18:13,21,2

Let’s take a look at more of Solomon’s truths, as well as some other simple good advice.

Words Have Power Quotes

“All that I say is, examine, inquire. Look into the nature of things. Search out the grounds of your opinions, the for and against. Know why you believe, understand what you believe, and possess a reason for the faith that is in you.” ~Francis Wright

“If God were our one and only desire we would not be so easily upset when our opinions do not find outside acceptance.” ~Thomas Kempis

Don’t say anything that would hurt another person. Instead, speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed. That way, what you say will help those who hear you. Ephesians 4:29 (GNT)

“We are masters of the unsaid words, but slaves of those we let slip out.” ~Winston Churchill

The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in God protects you from that. Proverbs 29:25 (MSG)

“Most fears of rejection rest on the desire for approval from other people. Don’t base your self-esteem on their opinions.” ~Harvay MacKay

The Lord hates evil thoughts but is pleased with kind words. Proverbs 15:27

“Liberty is not the power of doing what we like, but the right to do what we ought.” ~Lord Acton

Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do. And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with—even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14:1 (MSG)

“Our feelings of separation from God will diminish as we become more childlike before Him. That is not easy in a world where the opinions of other human beings can have such an effect on our motives. But it will help us recognize this truth: God is close to us and aware of us and never hides from His faithful children.” ~Henry B. Eyring

Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim. Proverbs 15:4

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” ~Francis of Assisi

Kind words are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. Proverbs 16:24 (NLT)

“Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love?’ These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will be many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.” ~Henri Nouwen

  1. Deb, I love this… I believe in the power of our words and I love the verse that says that the power of life and death are in the tongue! It reminds me that what I speak carries power to build up or tear down! Great post! Visiting from Hollys’ place for Testimony Tuesday!

    1. I’m thankful for Solomon’s wisdom. I’m also thankful God allowed us to see that although he was wise, he wasn’t perfect. There is so much to learn from him. So thankful that God offers His grace and forgiveness to us when we fail to use the wisdom He gives. Thanks Karrilee, and blessings!

  2. They are all wonderful, but I’m favoring the one from St. Francis. 🙂 Blessings, Deb!

    1. The St. Francis quote is framed and hung on the walls in every classroom at our church. I think it’s a wonderful reminder. Blessings to you too, Martha!

  3. The quote that stands out to me is the one by Lord Acton about Liberty. My favorite verse shared here is Proverbs 15:4. How many of us can identify with being on the giving and receiving end of both kinds words and ones that maim and wound. I definitely can relate, on all fronts. I don’t know that I have a personal quote or scripture that helps me, just a nudging of the Spirit to wait before speaking, particularly when I feel like lashing out.

    1. I liked Acton’s quote too Jolene. It reminded of the freedom we have in Christ and as citizens. Yes, I think we’ve all been on both ends of unkind words. I keep praying to learn better and do better. Blessings to you!
