When You’re Out of Your Comfort Zone – Pray Now

Life feels safe and secure when we're living in our comfort zone but we rarely grow or accomplish big things when we insist on staying where we're comfortable and refuse to try new things.

I have a closet full of shoes that I avoid unless I’m leaving the house and shoes are required. I love cute shoes but love comfort more.

If I have a choice, I will always choose comfort. Comfortable shoes. Comfortable clothes.

And a comfortable life.

Whenever possible … I choose to stay in my comfort zone.

Living comfortably in our comfort zone is defined as remaining in an easy and familiar environment that makes it possible for us to feel secure and in control.

But I wonder if that’s what God wants for us.

Eugene Petersen wrote the following paraphrase of James’ counsel…

Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.

James 1:2–3 (MSG)

Growth and change don’t happen in a safe and secure comfort zone.

So, even though it’s what we want, God knows it’s not what we need to accomplish His will in us and around us.

Scripture has many examples of people God called out of their comfort zones to accomplish His plans and purposes. He told…

NoahBuild a large boat. (Genesis 6:14)

Abraham – Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. (Genesis 12:1)

Moses – You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt. (Exodus 3:10)

DanielLead my people in Babylon, face lions, and prophesy of the future. (Daniel)

ElijahChallenge the Prophets of Baal. (1 Kings 18)

DisciplesLeave everything and follow “me.” (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John)

Paul“Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.” (Acts 9:15–16)

As you struggle with discomfort have you paused to ask yourself…

Is God calling me out of my comfort zone?

Has He planted a seed for missions? Is He inviting you to adopt or care for foster children? Is He calling you to teach a Bible Class? Is He encouraging you to write a book or blog? Go back to school? Volunteer?

Neale Donald Walsch, author of Conversations with God wrote…

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

Life feels safe and secure when we're living in our comfort zone but we rarely grow or accomplish big things when we insist on staying where we're comfortable and refuse to try new things.

Here are a few verses to pray…

Verses to Pray at the End of Your Comfort Zone

But when I am afraid,
I will put my trust in You.

Psalm 56:3

Father, I like it when life feels safe, secure, and comfortable. Change is often unsettling and uncertain especially when it’s something I didn’t choose or something I feared. That’s why, I am laying my fear at Your feet today.

I trust You, Lord. Your Word promises: I can trust Your unfailing love. You are greater than my circumstances. Your grace is sufficient in every situation.

Whether I am safely in my comfort zone or a season of discomfort and uncertainty … You are the Lord of my life. I trust You to walk this path with me and give me everything I need one moment at a time. Amen.

Have you never heard?
    Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of His understanding.
He gives power to the weak
    and strength to the powerless.

Isaiah 40:28–29

Lord, Thank you for allowing me to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You. Thank you for giving me the gift of faith and the blessing of Your Word. There is so much I don’t understand but I believe You are the Creator of all things who knows everything about me and every other creature You created.

You know everything I need and You promise to provide it. You give me strength and power when I am weak and comfort in Your presence.

Lord, You are my comfort zone. You are my heart’s desire. You are all I need now and forever. Amen.

You guide me with Your counsel,
leading me to a glorious destiny.
Whom have I in heaven but You?
I desire You more than anything on earth.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
    but God remains the strength of my heart;
    He is mine forever.

Psalm 73:24–26

Father, Thank you for these beautiful words. They have carried me through many difficult and painful seasons. You guide me through each day and every one leads me closer to my forever future in Your presence.

Even when my health fails or my heart and mind are weak … I trust that You are holding me close and You always will. I believe that by the power of Your Spirit, You will always give me exactly what You know I need.

Whether I am safe and secure in my comfort zone or walking a difficult path … You are with me. I need You more than anything. You are my Father, my Savior, and the Spirit who comforts me. I worship You. Amen.

Life feels safe and secure when we're living in our comfort zone but we rarely grow or accomplish big things when we insist on staying where we're comfortable and refuse to try new things.

When you are afraid because the Lord has called you out of your comfort zone, remember that by His grace, the Lord will give you beauty, joy, and fullness of life as He leads you to the future He has prepared for you.

So, don’t be afraid. Step out in faith and trust that the God of the universe is with you. He has a plan for you and He will help you accomplish it.

Before I go, I want you to know that I wrote this post for me. I needed this reminder. These last months have been way outside of my comfort zone. But God has been with me moment by moment … in the overwhelmingly hard moments, the I’m surviving moments, and every moment in between.

God is faithful. He always keeps His promises.

We would love to pray for you.

  2. How beautiful are these words and verses. And the most beautiful of all is that you are speaking from a heart that has endured so much for the last few months (and years)! You are such a kind and thoughtful person with much wisdom, and you share even when your heart is heavy and full.
God is our comfort zone. My home is my comfort zone, and my spouse is my comfort zone. It is hard at times to venture out. Especially when the heart is broken. It is hard to trust again. Anyone outside of the comfort zone. Keeping in mind and soul, that God is our “true comfort zone” we can go out into the world in total security because HE will protect us and keep us.

Deb, reading all these comments, I hope you realize how very much we all care about you. I have wondered how, as you are grieving for the loss of your beloved Rev, you still continue to give so much to all of us. I have been praying for you and my heart has broken for you on so many levels. You are such a good and faithful servant and I know that God will bless you with comfort and great peace. So many love you and are so thankful that God has blessed us with such a devoted teacher, counselor, and disciple. Thank you, that even in your own dark time, you still give us so much light. You are truly an ensample to the flock. May God hide you under the shadow of His wings till this be over past. With all sincerity and heart felt prayers, may God bless you with His amazing grace and tender mercies. You are so loved, my dear and beloved friend.
