5 Verses to Pray When You Want More of Jesus

When I'm distracted and discouraged, I need more of Jesus. Praying these five verses helps...

“He is a portion that exactly and directly suits the condition of the soul. The desires of the soul, and the necessities of the soul, and the wants of the soul, and the longings of the soul, and the prayers of the soul.

The soul can crave nothing, nor wish for nothing, but what is to be found in Christ. He is light to enlighten the soul, wisdom to counsel the soul, power to support the soul, goodness to supply the soul, mercy to pardon the soul, beauty to delight the soul, glory to ravish the soul, and fullness to fill the soul.” ~ Thomas Brooks

More of Jesus

There is nothing our souls need more than Jesus.

Nothing you and I can wish for or crave can fulfill us more than a relationship with Jesus.

Yet, even though you know that truth, if you’re like me, you are still so easily distracted and discouraged by life.

So many of you tell me how you are struggling with discouragement.

It is said that discouragement is caused by the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Failure
  • Frustration
  • Fear

Wow, I agree with that list!

When I’m tired. When I’ve made a mess of things. When everyone and everything is getting on my last nerve. When I focus on “what ifs” and “what could be’s” … yep, then I’m in danger of becoming discouraged!

So, when my soul is distracted or discouraged I need more of Jesus, the One “who exactly and directly suits the condition of my soul!”

5 Verses to Pray When You Want More of Jesus

When I'm distracted and discouraged, I need more of Jesus. Praying these five verses helps...

Jesus answered,
“I am the Way, and the Truth and the Life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6

Dear Jesus, thank you! You not only show us the way to the Father, You ARE the way to the Him. You not only show us the truth, You ARE the Truth. And yes, You ARE Life itself.

Please forgive me for being so shortsighted. I am so easily distracted and discouraged by what’s in front of me. I need more of You, Lord. Help me focus on who You are even more than what You do. Give me an eternal perspective as I live out this day. Guide me by the power of Your Spirit. Amen.

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus,
the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the
cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated
in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Think of all the hostility He endured from sinful
people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

Hebrews 12:2-3

O Jesus, I want to keep my eyes on You. Your love. Your life. Your sacrifice. Your glory! Thank you is not enough. Praise is just the beginning. You took my punishment to give me life. You are my future and my hope. With You, I will not grow weary and I will not give up. By the power and with the help of Your Spirit, I will live today for Your glory. Amen.

There is salvation in no one else!
God has given no other name under heaven
by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12

Your name alone, dear Jesus, is the promise of salvation. You fulfilled every prophecy and promise. You are my Savior, my Redeemer, my Lord. When I’m tempted by all the world has to offer, guard me by the power of Your Spirit. When I’m discouraged, remind me of Your heavenly promises. By Your grace, grant me the spiritual blessings of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Thanks and praise now and forever. Amen.

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe
in your heart that God raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved.

For it is by believing in your
heart that you are made right with God, and it is
by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

Romans 10:9–10

Lord, I believe. Please give me courage and strength to trust You completely even when I can’t see what you are doing. Help me surrender every distraction and discouragement to You.

Help me tell the story of all the ways You have delivered me and made Yourself known in my life. You forgive each sin and heal my heart. You restore me when I’m broken and give me courage and strength to follow where You lead. You meet every need and fill me with hope. You are my promise and I give you my all. Amen.

5 Verses to Pray When You Want More of Jesus by Deb Wolf @ Counting My Blessings

Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honor
and gave Him the name above all other names,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Philippian 2:9-11

Dearest Jesus, You are the name above all names.  The glory of the Father in human form. People instinctively flatten before You when You reveal Your glory. And yet, when You lived here among people, You claimed no glory of Your own.

Jesus, thank you for showing us the Father’s perfect love. You are Lord of all. You are my Lord and Savior. Help me fulfill my heart’s desire to humbly bow before You and boldly declare Your Lordship every day of my life. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen.

  1. Morning Deb, I couldn’t agree more: there is nothing my soul needs more than Jesus. Thank you once again for a Scripture filled post that points us to the Giver of life. I’m looking forward to reading Laura’s featured post about being a hot mess. Have a blessed weekend.

  2. Love this: “Jesus, You are even more than what You do.” Amen. Thank you, Deb, for the encouragement this morning!

  3. Courage and strength to trust completely…YES! I think for me, God has been working out the full measure of “completely.”

  5. love that list of F’s for discouragment – I can get all F’s on any given day. Today please pray for my heart preparation to speak the next two weekends (not tomorrow), and for the refining of my message for Welcome Heart. May I give it all to God and then let Him take it as He wills. How about you? (and thanks.) PS and I could use one more speaking gig for 2018, Lord willing.

  6. It’s so true that tiredness/fatigue contributes to feeling down. Who was it? Elijah that had to take a nap before he could do anything? 🙂 Have a great day!

  7. Deb, such a great post and a timely reminder that all I need is Jesus – more of Him is all I need. Thanks for the verses as well. As I prepare this morning to leave for our women’s retreat and putting the final touches on my teachings, I needed to read your words. Thank you my friend. Blessings on your weekend. As for me, my soul will be seeking more of Jesus and worry less about the details of this weekend. Thanks for hosting too.

  8. We are made new in Christ! Amen! Thanks for hosting!

  9. Thanks for sharing these fantastic verses, Deb.
Just this morning I read the account in John 4 where Jesus offered the woman water that she didn’t have to keep refilling. It would become “a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14). I read that and I could already feel the water refreshing my soul!

  10. Great post Deb!
My prayer is “it’s over to you Lord” & remind myself to “Be still, relax & know that He is God”
    Jennifer

I really enjoy your blog. great messages, simple, wonderful scripture support and leaves me wanting to follow through with my own study. I would like to know what version(s) of the Bible you use with each scripture you are sharing. I know it’s not King James. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Janet! I primarily study and quote from the New Living Translation. I love the Life Application Study Bible. I find the notes are very helpful. God’s blessings!

  14. One of my boys is a “go big or go home” kind of guy. I’ve had many many conversations with him about how “too much” of anything can become a bad thing … except for Jesus that is! There is never too much Jesus! Love these verses! And thank you for the feature ♥ You may not even realize it, but you have deepened my understanding of God’s grace over the last couple of years. How sweet that now one of my posts about His grace is featured here! God is good and you are one of His gifts as a result of that goodness!
