How Your Senses Help You Know, Love, & Trust God

God gave us a beautiful creation. When you use your senses to become more aware of all He has done life is more blessed and more enjoyable.

When was the last time your senses made you more aware of the goodness of God?

God gave us senses to experience all that He created more fully. Hearing, sight, smell, taste, and touch are all ways to take in the world around us. And it fascinates me how often my emotions are triggered by those things I often take for granted.

Think about the way…

  • A delicious taste, beautiful sight, or soothing sound can initiate peace and joy.
  • A warm touch can comfort and cause feelings of safety and security.
  • A smell can make us salivate or turn our stomachs … it can even prompt a memory or help us focus and relax.

The disciples enjoyed the blessing of spending three years in Jesus’ physical presence. They experienced Him through their senses … they ate and drank with Him, saw Him, heard Him, and smelled and touched life as He performed miracles and taught God’s TRUTH.

John wrote…

We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw Him with our own eyes and touched Him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen Him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that He is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then He was revealed to us.

1 John 1:1–2

By God’s grace, you and I can KNOW the TRUTH about JESUS from the people who lived with Him.

Think about how much you know and can tell about someone you lived with for several years.

But wait … we can. We enjoy the blessing of having His Spirit with us and within us.

John also wrote…

But you have received the Holy Spirit, and He lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what He teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as He has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

1 John 2:27

We may not have Jesus with us physically but we have His Spirit, His Word and prayer, His creation, and five senses to help us grow in FAITH, TRUST, and LOVE for the Lord.

Let’s pray…

God gave us a beautiful creation. When you use your senses to become more aware of all He has done life is more blessed and more enjoyable.

A Prayer to KNOW, TRUST, & LOVE God
with Your Senses

When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers—
the moon and the stars You set in place—
what are mere mortals that You should think about them,
human beings that You should care for them?

Psalm 8:3–4

Father, thank you for these words of David. They are so true! When I remember that they have been true for countless generations my soul rejoices and I can’t help but worship You.

I look at the expanse of the sky … the sun, moon, and stars set in perfect order to give light as You desire. Your creation is filled with majesty, color, sounds, and LIFE! Thank you!

Who are we, that You should think of and care for us? Everything You do speaks of Your love for us … even after we gave in to sin and damaged what You wanted for us, You gave us Your Son, Jesus, and promised us that we will enjoy life with You in Your perfect creation. Amen.

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.

Matthew 6:22

Father, thank you for giving us eyes to see the beauty of the world You made. In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He cautioned those following Him to be thoughtful and cautious about all they observed.

Images we look at leave impressions on our hearts and minds. The imprint of unhealthy images gives the enemy additional ways to distract and tempt us from Your Truth and all that You want for us. Please forgive us. Please forgive me. And make me aware to use my eyes in ways that fill me with the light of Your love. Amen.

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

Romans 10:17

Father, thank you for giving us ears to hear. I love the sound of birds in the morning and crickets at night. I love to listen to waves on the shore and waterfalls as they flow over the cliffside.

You spoke Your Word so that we might KNOW You and grow deep roots in Your LOVE. You want us to hear Your Word, the Good News about Jesus, as we gather in Your mercy and grace.

Please help me listen with wisdom and discernment. Please help me identify the truth and focus my thoughts on the sounds that are pleasing to You. Amen.

God gave us a beautiful creation. When you use your senses to become more aware of all He has done life is more blessed and more enjoyable.

We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them.

1 John 5:18

I thank and praise You, Lord, for holding me … when I am tempted or discouraged, disappointed or in pain You embrace me and Your guiding touch leads me through. When You walked among us, You touched the ill and the unlovely. I look forward to the day when I will feel the warmth of Your physical touch.

I thank You for giving us a way to help and encourage each other with a loving hand. I thank you for the cuddles of infants, the fluff of puppies and kittens, the softness of pillows, and the coziness of blankets. Thank you for the sense of touch that soothes us and makes us feel safe. Amen.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!
Fear the Lord, you His godly people,
for those who fear Him will have all they need.

Psalm 34:8

Father God, David proclaimed Your goodness and invited all who read these words to learn the blessings of KNOWing and TRUSTing You. He said, “taste and see” encouraging us all to SEEK You … to give You a try and find out for ourselves just how good and gracious You are.

I thank You for prompting me to SEEK You. I have found peace, joy, strength, contentment, and love in Your presence. And when I have You and those beautiful blessings in my life, I have everything I need.

I praise You for the beautiful complexity of all You have made. By Your grace, please help me use my senses to explore and enjoy the world You created. And help me use all that I am to live for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

I can get so busy just living life that I often forget to notice the simple things God has given us to enjoy … beautiful things that help us pause and KNOW Him better.

The good news is that when you and I become aware of God’s goodness through our senses, life is just better…

“A Christian’s God-focused enjoyment of creation makes it taste better, look better, feel better, smell better, and sound better.” ~ Steve DeWitt

Amen! And may the Lord be with you and bless you with the beauty of His love.

We would love to pray for you.

Oh Deb, how this post has calmed my heart this morning. I was talking with God about all the chaos going on around me, how unsettling it is that my home is upside down right now, how all the noise of the world, insights such fear and concern into my heart. I long for quiet green pastures beside the still water. And in the stillness to use all the senses that God has blessed me with to refresh my weariness. Your words have calmed my emotions and helped me to realize to the senses that I am neglecting in the business of my life at the moment. You have given me a delightful refreshment my dear friend!
