Are you a purposeful planner? Do you set goals for the future and intentionally plan the steps necessary to accomplish them?

Solomon wrote:

Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life.
You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

Proverbs 19:20–21

Setting goals and making plans is great but if you and I want to be “successful” we need wisdom and true wisdom comes from living with an eternal perspective.

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12 (ESV)

Realizing that everything here is temporary helps us plan purposefully and live intentionally . . . wisely giving the things that last forever the greatest priority.

So, I’m taking a closer look to see if there are any changes I need to make to live the rest of my life with an eternal perspective.

5 Ways to Become a Purposeful Planner
and Live Intentionally

1. Decide You Want to Plan Purposefully and Live Intentionally

If you’re tired, stressed, agitated, impatient . . . okay, you get the idea. It may be time for a change.

I want to live authentically, intentionally, and simply. I want to set goals and make plans that glorify God.

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Ephesians 5:1–2

2. Know Your Core Values and Live with Integrity

Knowing your core values can help you make choices, manage your time more effectively, and balance your career, family, friends, mission, and free time. (Click the link above to learn more.)

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:16–17

3. Dedicate Your Time – Minutes, hours, days, and years to God.

Time is our most precious commodity. Every breath is a gift from God . . . given to us to be used for His glory.

So, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him.

Romans 12:1

4. Defer to God and Follow His Will

God is the One who designed and created you. He knows what makes you authentic. He knows the best way for you to live intentionally.

So, spend time reading in His Word and sit with Him in prayer . . . ask Him to help you become a purposeful planner who lives intentionally.

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.

Psalm 32:8

 5. With God’s Help – Determine Your Plan

Make a list of your obligations, must-dos, and goals, and look at them in light of your core values. Then intentionally ask if they’re necessary or beneficial.

Always remember that even as you and I plan for the future we need to live one day at a time.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.

Matthew 6:33

Let’s pray for God’s wisdom and guidance to help us become purposeful planners who live intentionally.

A Prayer to Seek God’s Wisdom When Making Plans

Father, thank you for the gift of life. You created me specifically for Your plans and purposes. You took my sinful flaws and failures and placed them on Jesus, my Savior. You made it possible for me to be forgiven and free through Your grace, mercy, and love.

Through Jesus, You bless my days with good and give me an eternal future that fills every day with hope. I want to thank you by living every day of my life for Your glory. I want to purposefully make plans according to Your will. I want to grow beyond my weaknesses and wisely use my gifts for You.

So, Father, I ask that Your Spirit will guide me as I make my plans. I pray that You will give me everything I need to live intentionally. Please strengthen and empower me to love the way You desire. Help me live one day at a time while keeping an eternal perspective.

I can trust that because You are with me, I have everything I need today and my forever future is secure through my faith in Jesus, my Lord and Savior. In whose name I pray. Amen.

  1. May God help us all to be purposeful in our planning, and aware of where He is leading us at all times.
    Blessings, Deb!

    1. That is my prayer, Martha! May we trust God’s guidance and plan as He leads us. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Blessings, my friend!

  2. These are such valuable tips. I personally am quite the planner, but I really appreciated the reminder that planning and organization are actually Biblical concepts. We can get carried away or absorbed in all our planning (Which should be avoided) but I love how you brought out that we are to be aware of the minutes and hours of our lives – that our planning can be done by the guidance of the LORD. Thanks for this encouragement today, Deb!
