God is Great – 5 of the Best Verses to Know
Most of us have heard the words, “God is great.” Many even grew up saying a mealtime prayer that began with those words.
Psalm 48 begins with the words…
The Lord is great and should be given much praise.
Psalm 48:1
The Lord is great. Yes, God is great!
But what exactly does that mean?
It has become popular to refer to extremely talented individuals as the G.O.A.T. – the Greatest of All Time.
We use the word great so frequently and casually that I decided maybe it was time for me to take a closer look at what the Lord wants us to know about His greatness.
The word itself is defined as:
- an outstandingly superior or skillful person
- someone who is eminent or distinguished
- something very big, very powerful, very strong, very important, very bad, or very talented.
So, what makes God great? What makes Him worthy to be given much praise?
He is not just a superior or skillful person.
God is great in comparison to anyone or anything.
God is completely set apart from people and that is why it is impossible for us to completely understand or comprehend His greatness. In every possible way, He cannot be compared to anyone or anything else.
God is set apart from all that He created. He cannot be limited. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and present everywhere for all time all at once. He is perfect in wisdom. And He is unequaled in grace, mercy, and love.
Nothing in all the world compares with God. His greatness is matchless and beyond our comprehension.
Here is just a small selection of verses that tell us about the Lord’s greatness.
Because of His great mercy, He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3
For His unfailing love for us is powerful; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the Lord!
Psalm 118:2
Oh, Lord God! You yourself made the heavens and earth by Your great power and with Your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!
Jeremiah 32:17
Jesus … said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.” Mark 10:27
Mark 10:27
I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
The bottom line…
Greatness defines God.
God is great and everything He does is great!
Let’s pray…
Praying . . . God is Great!
Father God, You are great. Everything You do is great. We are Your creation. You looked over everything You made and called it “very good.” (Genesis 1:31) You are holy. You have said, “I alone am God; there is none like me.” (Isaiah 46:9) The paths You prepare for us are “true and right.” (Hosea 14:9) The heavens declare Your glory (Psalm 19:1) and Your love lasts forever. (Psalm 136)
I am guilty of calling the most frivolous things “great.” Too often, I turn my attention to the people and things the world calls great. I am so sorry. Please forgive me.
Yes, You are great and everything You do is great. Isaiah described Your greatness by saying, “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never becomes faint or weary; there is no limit to His understanding.” (Isaiah 40:28)
You love. You save. You shepherd. You never change. You are all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever-present. You are wisdom and truth, just and righteous, gracious and merciful. You are perfect in all Your ways.
So, I will humbly and quietly sit at Your feet today that I might KNOW You. I will remember who You are and all You’ve done in the past that I might TRUST You. And I will, by the power of Your Spirit, LOVE You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray. Amen.
So . . . what do the words “God is great” mean to you?
To me, it means that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. It means that I can believe that God keeps His promises. It means that I can experience hard-to-understand peace and that through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, you and I can live in the presence of His greatness and glory forever and always. God’s greatness means that His grace, mercy, and love will always be greater than our current circumstances.
I love this quote…
It’s not great faith you need; it is faith in a great God. ~ N. T. Wright
And I love these verses…
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. 1 Chronicles 29:11
“This God, our God forever and ever—He will always lead us.” Psalm 48:14
May we never forget that—God is great forever and always! Amen and Amen!
May the Lord bless you as you focus your heart and mind on His greatness today, tomorrow, and always!
We would love to pray for you.

Yes indeed, God is great!! Your post is wonderful. Bringing to all of us the wisdom of God’s greatness.
This morning, as is my custom each day, I walked out on to our screen porch, before the sunrise and took in all of nature and the serenity of the quiet morning. Standing tall is a huge Pine tree. As I gazed at the huge tree, it made me think of how large and great God is. Pondering, I thought of the extreme and immeasurable love that God has for each of us. It can’t be measured!! It is huge! Encompassing! Yes, Deb, indeed, God is great! Great beyond measure! Thank you once again for your post! All day, and always, I am reminded of God’s greatness!
Beautiful and so comforting! Thru your words, it was like I was right there with you this morning! Your screened in porch sounds awesome! May the greatness of our wonderful Father God, surround you today and every day!
Hugs, sweet friend!

Sue, that’s beautiful! I love quiet early mornings with the Lord. I take our pup out early and on this spring morning I was overwhelmed by the beautiful sky and spring green flourishing. I can only imagine the wonders we will see in the new heaven and earth when He allows us to enjoy so much beauty in this broken world. Blessings, dear friend!
AMEN! AMEN!
GOD is the GREAT “I AM!”
There is no way, and not even enough words in the entire dictionary, to describe the Greatness of God! His GREATNESS is far beyond any comprehensions or imaginations our simple earthly minds can ever fathom! In awe and all wonder, I will praise the GREATEST OF ALL, the GREAT
“I AM!” HIS GREATNESS IS THE MOST OVERWHELMING GREATNESS WE CAN EVER EXPERIENCE, BUT NEVER DEFINE!
I will delight in trying to perceive His greatness! Oh what a joyful bounty that will give my being today! Thank You, Deb!
I love that, Kathy! It does give us joy to focus on the greatness of our God and all that He has done and continues to do for us every day. Blessings and hugs!
I will take time today to contemplate the greatness of God, and try to no longer use this word in a frivolous manner.
Blessings, Deb!
Me too, Martha! His greatness knows no bounds. Blessings, my friend!
This is so beautiful! God is so worthy of all our praise! Beautiful and comforting post with beautiful Scriptures, too! Thank you Deb … ????❤️
Thank you, Donna! God bless you!
Last evening was the first clear sky we had in awhile. Looking at the almost fingerclip moon with Venus shining below it, and other stars/constellations very visible, filled me with a sense of wonder. I always think of how GREAT God is when l see what he has created.
I love that, Lorna! I love heading out in the early morning especially when the sky is bright blue and spring is in the air. Paul wrote – Ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Romans 1:20 God bless you!
Indeed this post was beautiful just like our Lord Jesus is to us. His greatness is indescribable knowing he created the world. If he created mountains, stars, sun. Moon, water, animals, plants and us humans how great must he be. Nothing is impossible for our Lord he is our King of Kings that can handle anything and everything. Thank you for your unfailing love, trust, grace, peace, wisdom, and mercy. You will forever be my King and I will always love you with all my heart, mind, soul to guide me throughout my life. Deb and all on this podcast have a blessed day!????
Amen, Ana! Everything He is and everything He does is great! What a blessing it is to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE Him. Blessings!
