The Unchanging Truth About Your Identity & God’s Love
I don’t know about you, but I can be my own worst enemy.
Why is it so much easier to think about wh0 I’m not rather than remembering God’s unchanging truth about who I am?
You’d think that after years of living with this bad habit, I’d learn to consistently take my negative thoughts captive so I can replace them with God’s truth. That I’d be better at thinking less about who I am and more about whose I am!
But I’m so easily distracted by the wrong voices.
God’s Word tells us the unchanging truth about our identity … a truth that is fully grounded in God’s love.
I need a truth pep talk because I don’t believe God wants us to dwell on frailties and failures when He has given us everything we need to remember who we are in Him.
So, I’ve made a list of God’s promises to help me remember who He says I am and I pray it blesses you.

♥ You are Precious
How precious are your thoughts about __________, O God. They cannot be numbered! Psalm 139:17
♥ You are Loved
We know, dear __________ that God loves you and has chosen you to be His own people. 1 Thessalonians 1:4
♥ You are a Child of God
For since __________’s friendship with God was restored by the death of His Son while __________ was still His enemy, __________ will certainly be saved through the life of His Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. Romans 5:10–11
♥ You are a Friend of Jesus
There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command … Now ________ is my friend, since I have told you everything the Father told me. John 15:13–15
♥ You are a New Creation
This means that __________ who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17
♥ You are Chosen
Even before He made the world, God loved ________ and chose _________ in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. Ephesians 1:4
♥ You are Dead to Sin and Alive in Christ

________ is a citizen of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our Savior. Philippians 3:20
♥ You are God’s Masterpiece
For ________ is God’s masterpiece. He has created ________ anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10
♥ You are Victorious
Can anything ever separate ________ from Christ’s love? Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is __________ through Christ, who loved __________. Romans 8:35, 37
♥ You are Safe in God’s Love
I am convinced that nothing can ever separate ________ from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither ________ fears for today nor _______ worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate ________ from God’s love. A Prayer Thanking God for His
Unchanging Truth About Your Identity
Father God, Thank you for Your promises that tell me who You say I am in and through my Savior Jesus. The “Accuser” of my soul wants me to focus on my weaknesses and failures telling me that I should focus on my guilt and shame, not Your gracious and merciful love.
You gave Your Son, Jesus, and He gave His life so that I might live freely forgiven guided by Your Spirit to live for Your glory. That is the truth You say in Your Word about those who KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You.
Your Word says, “Our identity” is that we are Your people because You called us out of darkness into Your marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9–10) And Jesus is the Light who shows us the Way to Life with You that lasts forever.
When I am weak and discouraged, please help me cling to Your unchanging truth that tells me I am Yours through faith in Jesus because of Your grace, mercy, and love. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray. Amen.
I’m learning that…
When you and I take our discouraging thoughts captive and replace them with God’s unchanging truth about our identity…
Then and only then can we have what we need to live according to God’s will for us.
He wants us to live freely confident that we are His children, friends of Jesus, chosen, loved, and citizens of heaven. We are God’s masterpieces safe in God’s love.
I want to keep this close and change my thoughts more quickly because in Jesus … it is always well with my soul.
It’s well with my heart and mind, too! And by the power of the Spirit, God says it is well with your soul, too.

Goodness! I have had that problem for years; being my own worst enemy. Years ago, I had a very dear friend (this person has passed on to Heaven now) to tell me that! I had never thought of it before, but it sure did wake me when I was told. Thank you for this post and the verses that I can insert my own name into. I have repeated some of them many times, but it never occurred to me to add my name. I will copy and paste them and for sure will do that.
When friends let me down or I am hurt ( and I am a very sensitive person) I take it on myself and I do tend to lecture “ME!” Is this just human nature?
Deb, you are such a good witness and such a wise person with your Bible and Christian knowledge. You help us all so very much. I guess I never would have thought you would have this same problem. It is good that we, all of us who are your followers and friends, can work on this together. This site you have created has been such a blessing to me and I know to all of the other fine people who are followers. Lasting Christian friendships have been made here (Kathy, you are a dear friend to me, thank you) and I love and look forward to reading the new ones on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I think we are a lot alike, Sue. Whenever I had a disagreement with a friend as a child, my mom would always challenge me about the ways I could have been more understanding of their point of view and what I might have said and done to make the situation better. Since that time I have always replayed conversations and over-analyzed my attitudes. It took me a very long time to accept God’s love without my need to be “good girl.” I need to be reminded of His love promises all the time.

Oh my goodness, Deb! I have always had such a low self esteem anyway, and I am so critical of myself about everything! But knowing I am fearfully and wonderfully made, sure helps! And I ditto Sue’s beautiful words!! What wonderful and wise comrades God has blessed me with in You and Sue! I have yet to get my email fixed…things have been so crazy these last few months. Thank you, Deb for everything you give us thrift these devotionals. They are priceless and I cherish them so much. I constantly fill my own mind with all my failures, all my wrongs, just knowing I can never be good enough for God. I have sinned far too much, even when I knew what Iv was doing was wrong. How can God ever forgive me for those things? Please pray for my peace, and that my husband would come to Christ, and that my children, who are all baptized and understand and believe in Jesus, would truly follow and worship Him. Thank you.

Remember the story of the Prodigal Son. I love that the Father is waiting and watching for His son to return from sin and when he does, the Father runs to him, embraces him, and throws a party.
