Where do you go and what do you do when you are lonely?

Loneliness is considered a state of mind … a feeling of undesired isolation or insufficient connection, whether alone or in a crowd.

New moms, students at a new school, newly diagnosed patients, new widows and widowers, recently divorced, and empty nesters are just some of the people who find themselves dealing with loneliness.

And it seems especially difficult for anyone who feels like people can’t possibly understand what they are going through.

So today, we’re running to the One who understands every burden and struggle—the One who loves us more than we can imagine.

We’re going to take Kay Arthur’s words as an example…

“Snuggle in God’s arms. When you are hurting, when you feel lonely, left out. let Him cradle you, comfort you, reassure you of His all-sufficient power and love.”

And these words of Peter…

Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.

1 Peter 5:7

To heart and pray…

5 Verses to Pray When You Are Lonely

Turn to me and have mercy,
for I am alone and in deep distress.
My problems go from bad to worse.
Oh, save me from them all!

Psalm 34:16–17

Father God, I lift these words of David, asking You to come close to me with Your mercy. Loneliness is making my problems feel greater and is increasing my fear and anxiety. Please help me.

Like a child crawling onto a loving parent’s lap, I ask You to hold me close. Remind me that You never have and never will leave or forsake me. Please help me focus on Your loving presence, surrender my loneliness to You, and open myself to others. Amen.

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

Romans 8:38

What a wonderful promise, Father! Your love is faithful and everlasting. Because Jesus defeated sin, death, and the power of demons nothing can separate me from Your love. You promise that my faith is safe and that You will never allow me to be tempted beyond what Your Spirit will give me the strength to endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

So, when I am lonely and afraid, I will trust Your unfailing love. I believe You will keep me safe from anything that tries to separate me from Your loving care. I believe You will give me hope to look beyond this moment to the future You have prepared for me. Amen.

You go before me and follow me.
You place Your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

Psalm 139:5–6

Father, this Word is too wonderful and too great for me to understand. You created me because You wanted someone like me in this world at this time. I’m humbled … especially because You know everything about me inside and out.

Please forgive my failures and weaknesses. You have poured Your blessings over my life and too often, I fail to trust and obey Your will. So I’m praying with David…

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. (Psalm 139:23–24)

By Your grace, help me trust and obey Your plans and purposes. Amen.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

2 Corinthians 1:3–4

Father God, all thanks and praise for Your mercy and the countless times You comfort my hurting heart. Today, I focus on the times You have comforted me through loneliness … those times when I felt like no one understood my circumstances and I was anxious and afraid.

Lord, open my eyes to see other lonely people who need to be comforted with Your love. Fill me to overflowing and grant me the peace and joy of sharing Your blessings of faith, hope, and love. Amen.

But as for me, I will sing about Your power.
Each morning I will sing with joy about Your unfailing love.
For You have been my refuge,
a place of safety when I am in distress.
O my Strength, to You I sing praises,
for You, O God, are my refuge,
the God who shows me unfailing love.

Psalm 59:16–17

Oh, Father, thank you for being my place of refuge. Thank you for inviting me to bring my burdens to you. Thank you for keeping me safe and giving me peace. You are my strength and shield. You give me everything I need to accomplish Your will even when life is hard.

Please help me focus on You, my source of strength. Make me aware of the ways You show me Your unfailing love. Help me help others when I am full of hope and promise and when I am lonely. Give me the strength and courage I need to reach out rather than waiting for someone to reach out to me.

I worship and adore You, my Lord and my God. I trust You to provide ways for me to leave loneliness behind and I pray that You will use me to help other lonely hearts heal. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Here’s a powerful quote from Elizabeth Elliot…

“Loneliness comes over us sometimes as a sudden tide. It is one of the terms of our humanness, and, in a sense, therefore, incurable. Yet I have found peace in my loneliest times not only through acceptance of the situation, but through making it an offering to God, who can transfigure it into something for the good of others.”

May the Lord be with you and bless you when you are lonely. May He give you everything you need to notice and bless another lonely heart.

So many people feel so lonely in their losses and afflictions, Deb. I pray that God would open our hearts and minds to reach out to them and offer prayers that comfort and help them know they’re never alone.
    Blessings!

I loved this today, Deb. I have felt a sense of deep loneliness since I lost my parents 23 years ago! We would spend hours enjoying being together in fellowship and real conversations! These days of texting can be convenient to say hey, but in no way curb the loneliness of being without companionship and heartfelt conversations. Loved what you said about loneliness making our problems feel greater and increases our fear and anxiety. Such a true and valuable statement! And exactly the way I have been feeling for a while now. Praise God, that His presence is always close and I can have deep conversations with Him anytime! Otherwise, I would be living on a nutty boat bound for nowhere! Thank you for these beautiful verses and your beautiful prayer. They truly spoke to my heart. Have a blessed weekend full of healing fellowship and lovely conversations! Love you, sweet friend!
And to my dear friend, Sue…I miss you and love you. I am sorry I have been so long in reaching out. Life has been so busy crazy and seems I haven’t had a moment to just breathe! I pray all is well with you and sending you a big hug today. May you also be blessed with a lovely and happy weekend! I have truly missed our friendship and hope we can chat again soon!

    1. I’ve missed you, Kathy. I know you’ve had so much going on. I am doing well and spend much time with daughter and her family but there are the lonely moments too. Your parents sound like wonderful people. It is a great blessing to know that however things look and feel … we are not alone. Our Lord and Savior is always with us. Praying for you, sweet friend! Blessings and hugs!
