Did you know that there are powerful health benefits to having a positive attitude? An attitude that is formed when we are grateful and kind?

Are you grateful and kind when you talk to yourself, or are you your own worst critic?

I’ll admit that I’m prone to severe self-criticism.

I want to enjoy the blessing of a positive attitude, but it’s hard to remain positive when we focus on our flaws and failures.

Did you know that there are powerful health benefits to having a positive attitude? An attitude that begins with gratitude and kindness?

The Mayo Clinic website lists the following:

  • An increased life span.
  • Lower rates of depression.
  • Lower levels of stress and anxiety.
  • Greater resistance to the common viruses.
  • An improved well-being overall.
  • Reduced cardiovascular disease.
  • Better coping skills through trials and troubles.

Remember, Jesus said…

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart…

John 16:33

With the Spirit’s help, we can take heart and choose whether our self-talk is positive and constructive or discouraging and self-defeating.

I want the former.

Paul J. Meyer, the founder of Leadership Management Int. and Success Motivation Int. wrote…

Your mind believes what you tell it.

If you and I want to change our attitude, we need to change the way we talk to ourselves. It’s time for us to be grateful and kind to everyone including the person we see in the mirror.

God made each of us exactly the way He wanted us to accomplish His plans and purposes at this time and place. Have you ever thought that your self-defeating thoughts could be preventing you from accomplishing God’s will?

I want to commit to change. So, starting today:

  1. When we look in the mirror, let’s find at least one thing about ourselves we want to appreciate and thank God for.
  2. When we fall short or fail, let’s quickly ask God to forgive us through Jesus. Thank Him for His mercy and grace. Forgive ourselves and let it go.
  3. When the day’s struggle tries to ruin our positive attitudes, let’s pray, give it to God, and then do something encouraging. (Call a friend, turn up the music, take a walk, sing and dance, etc.)
  4. Repeat 1-3 as often as necessary.

Here are some verses to help us replace the enemy’s lies with God’s TRUTH…

  • When you and I think, “I can’t.” Remember the Bible says: You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. Philippians 4:13
  • When we feel unlovable. Remember that God said, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” Jeremiah 31:3
  • When the enemy says you’re unwanted. Remember: You are a chosen child of God. 1 John 3:1
  • When you believe you’re unworthy. Remember that: You were purchased with the blood of Christ. Ephesians 1:7
  • When you think you’re friendless. Remember that: Jesus calls you His friend. John 15:15
  • When you’re lonely. Remember, Jesus said: I am with you always. Even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Bless Your Attitude by
Being Grateful and Kind

Father God, Your Word tells me that You made me for this time and place so that I might accomplish the plans and purposes You prepared for me.

I can be so foolish. Like the Whiney Wilderness Wanderers in Exodus, I often focus on the negative things that are in, on, and around me. Please forgive me.

You want me to enjoy love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and more, and You’ve given me everything I need to make it possible. You pour Your love into my life through Jesus and the Spirit. You have blessed my life with faith-filled friends to encourage and inspire me.

Please help me have a positive attitude that comes from being grateful and kind to myself and others. With the Spirit’s help, I want to focus my heart and mind on my Savior, Jesus, who is the source of my faith and hope.

I believe that with You, everything is possible. I trust that through Your grace, You will help me to be grateful and kind, showing Your love to the person I see in the mirror and the people I see around me. Thanks and praise in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Friend, it’s time for each of us to start being kinder to ourselves. No more comparing ourselves to the edited photos we see online, our neighbors, or the seemingly perfect families who sit around us in worship.

I believe with God’s help, we can do this. Here are a couple of verses and a quote to help…

Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
    I will praise Him again—
    my Savior and my God!

Psalm 42:5

“My hope lives not because I am not a sinner, but because I am a sinner for whom Christ died; my trust is not that I am holy, but that, being unholy, He is my righteousness. My faith rests not upon [who] I am or shall be or feel or know, but in [who] Christ is, in what He has done, and in what He is now doing for me. Hallelujah!” ~ Charles Spurgeon

The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation. so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Ephesians 4:29

With God’s help, may we focus on the truth of who God says we are, being grateful and kind, and repeating God’s TRUTHS as often as necessary.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. Yes! I can easily be critical of myself. Thank you for a great reminder to focus on Christ and find my value in Him.
I’ll be rereading this one !
    Blessings to you!

    1. I’m so glad it blessed you, Cecilia! God be with you!

  2. Oh, Precious Friend, this was a great reminder today!! Our worth lies in what Christ thinks of us and if we could only dwell on that on our “off” days! How guilty I am of putting myself down. I tend to do this more often when I feel rejected or hurt by others. (I have to realize that maybe I expect too much from others!!! That can create more guilt!) Anyway, I am making gratitude a daily practice. God is so good and so good to me. I am thankful that HE gave me a giving heart. (My mother also had a giving heart.) This is truly one to keep and reread. Thank you for your friendship and your wonderful Biblical wisdom. You are a treasure. Many prayers for you to have a great and safe weekend.

    1. Amen, Sue! I want to remember God’s gracious love and the way He looks at His children. I want to offer grace willingly like my Father. Blessings and HUGS, dear friend!

  3. Martha Orlando says:

Thanks for reminding us that people who are grateful are grace-filled people, Deb. May we learn to love ourselves and others as Jesus commanded. Blessings!

    1. Amen, Martha! Sometimes it’s easier to be kinder to others that it is to offer grace to ourselves. Praise God for His grace, mercy, and love even though He knows everything about us. Blessings and HUGS, dear friend!

  4. Thank you very much for your articles. I needed this today not only for myself, also for my grandchildren. At times talk alone from a grandma does not help, I will make use of this teaching. Sincere thanks for your prayers. Stay safe, enjoy your weekend. Blessings always.

    1. Thank you for your kind encouragement, Maria! May the Lord be with and bless you and your family!
