Powerful Bible Truths That Transformed My Life

I used to read the Bible like a self-help book. In some ways, it is. But it is so much more. I'd love to tell you about the way it transformed my life. I believe it has the power to change yours too.

You’ve read the self-help books and done everything you can to have the marriage, family, career, and extended relationships that match the perfect life portraits you read about online.

My family might tell you that I used to read the Bible like a self-help book. And in some ways, it is, but it is so much more.

Because we all have free will, which often exhibits itself through pride and self-righteousness, following foolish ideas and practices that fail to follow the Bible’s God-honoring wisdom.

Life is messy, and we need help. But where we look for that help matters more than we realize.

For me, it was a life-changing mess that prompted me to SEEK the Lord in a new way…

I was wrecked by the knowledge that there were no self-help book answers to fix our circumstances. I reached the end of myself and had nothing to offer but a broken heart holding broken human promises. I needed more. I needed help, comfort, and peace. I needed hope.

And that’s when the Lord reached down and helped me understand my complete need for Him. Not to fix the problem but to heal me. I needed more than what He could do; I needed Him. I needed His presence.

That was my moment of surrender. I grabbed my Bible and prayed, “Lord, please help me KNOW You!”

I started in Genesis, Exodus, and yes, even Leviticus and Numbers … all the way through Revelation. For the first time in my life, I read God’s love letter from beginning to end. Not to learn how to fix my life or even to fix me. I read it to SEEK and KNOW who God says He is.

And I fell in LOVE with the King of kings and Lord of lords as I read…

In the beginning, God created…

Genesis 1:1

Have you never heard?
    Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of His understanding.
He gives power to the weak
    and strength to the powerless.

Isaiah 40:28–29

At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know Him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to Himself through Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:16b–18a

I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

Romans 8:38

“I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”

Revelation 1:8

Whom have I in heaven but You?
I desire You more than anything on earth.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
    but God remains the strength of my heart;
    He is mine forever.

Psalm 73:25–26

The more I read, the more I realized how often I had made God too small, too human.

What if our mistake is trying to make the I AM understandable? What if we give up because we want to define and explain the unexplainable?

Praise God, that’s what changed for me over the past 20+ years. It’s taken countless hours of one-on-one time with the Lord through His Word and prayer for me to humbly accept that even when I don’t understand, His ways are best.

Even when something He allows saddens me, I’ve come to believe He will use it for good in ways that will glorify Him. I’ve learned to trust in His absolute power to heal hearts because He’s healed mine.

And that’s what I want you to know when you visit Counting My Blessings.

God may not fix your present problem or clean up the mess going on around you, but He will always transform a broken heart that is fully surrendered to Him.

I pray that gives you hope, because He wants you to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Him. He is powerful. Indescribable. Unimaginable. Loving. Caring. And Personal. He is Almighty God, and He will never give up on you.

When I quit trying to get Him to fix my life and give me what I believed I needed. When I gave up looking for “self-help” and sat quietly at His feet, opening my heart and mind to Him … He gave me what I needed most, a heart that fully trusts His perfect, unchanging, ever-present love.

I used to read the Bible like a self-help book. In some ways, it is. But it is so much more. I'd love to tell you about the way it transformed my life. I believe it has the power to change yours too.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Thanking God for His Bible Truths

Lord God, I thank you for blessing me with a family, school, and church that taught me about Your love and the precious gift of my Savior, Jesus. I can’t remember a time when I haven’t believed that You are Creator of All, Savior of Sinners, and Spirit of Truth.

I have always trusted You with my eternal future, but I have not always trusted You with my present needs and emotions. Like the Wilderness Wanderers, I believed You were leading me to the Promised Land, but I grumbled and complained about my current circumstances. I remember the many times I allowed my fear and doubt to sidetrack me.

As I look back, I am truly thankful for that season of brokenness when You lovingly whispered, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) And by Your grace and the power of Your Spirit, I listened. I ran to You through Your Word and prayer.

It is miraculous what You will do with a heart surrendered to You. You gave me courage and strength to face my fears. You healed my broken heart and gave me the ability to face my daily struggles, knowing You are with me.

I gave you my doubt-filled burdens, and You gave me peace. You “created a new heart in me, and renewed my spirit.” (Psalm 51:10) You transformed me with the TRUTH of Your LOVE.

By Your grace, I will join with believers everywhere and worship You now and forever. I love You, Lord. Amen.

I used to read the Bible like a self-help book. In some ways, it is. But it is so much more. I'd love to tell you about the way it transformed my life. I believe it has the power to change yours too.

God’s Word is living and powerful. With the power of the Holy Spirit, it holds God’s power to transform lives.

It counsels us to surrender our hurt feelings, failures, frustrations, fears, anxiety, bitterness, impatience, and shame to the One who is Able to fill us with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

May the Lord be with you and bless you with a love for spending time with Him in His Word.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. Deb, I too, had a similar experience…it was a painful circumstance that taught me to seek Him for Who He is, not for what I thought I wanted/needed from Him. I love how the Lord draws us closer to Him. I want to know Him more and more, to love and trust Him no matter what. I won’t lie – there are days I struggle. But no matter what, I know He is all I need. Thank you for sharing and reminding me to seek, know, love, and trust Him. He is where the peace is!

    1. Thanks for your encouragement, Cecilia. I think we’re prone to believing we can do life on our own when things are going well. Then like the wilderness wanderers we run to God with our complaints when we want Him to make life comfortable once again. I wish I’d learned this important lesson earlier, but I’m thankful the Lord brought me to a place where I needed Him more than anything. Have a wonderful week. Blessings and hugs!

  2. Thank you, Deb, for your candor and honesty in writing this post. God is not there to fix us, He’s there to love us and care for our hearts. Yes, reading His Word is the best way to truly know Him. May we all approach Him with humble hearts. Blessings!

    1. I appreciate your kindness, Martha! I am so thankful for the Lord’s patient love as He works in and around us guiding us to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Him. He is so very gracious and good! Praying your week is abundantly blessed!
