Tomorrow Rev and I will celebrate the anniversary of the day we met. I’m just thankful he didn’t throw me out after my big mouth almost ruined everything.

We met at a dorm devotion at Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Now it’s really not as holy as it sounds. Dorm devos were often set up by a guys or gals dorm to meet people of the opposite sex. We were 18 years old for heaven’s sake. 🙂

Two weeks before I’d come back to the dorm after a disastrous 45-minute date and told a friend, “If this is what dating is like here . . . I’M DONE!

And she said, “Do you know Blake Wolf?”

I shook my head. She added, “Well, we’ll have to make that happen.”

Yep, that’s how dorm devotions worked on our small college campus.

December 10th . . . I put on my cutest outfit and all the charm and flirtation I could call up and headed off with girlfriends to meet the guys.

December 11th . . . Rev’s (Blake) best friend asked me out. I said yes. (A story for another day.) He was a great guy and we went out several times in the next couple of weeks, but I guess the fact that I talked about Blake fairly often made him think I wasn’t interested . . . he told Blake he should call me.

But because of Christmas break that didn’t happen until January. Our first date January 11th.

I should probably add here that I was not confident when it came to guys. I’d had a handful of dates in high school and although I had guy friends I’d never had a “boyfriend.” After first dates, I rarely had an interest in a repeat performance. I look back on that now as God’s grace.

When Blake asked me to go out after the basketball game again the following week, it was a different story. I was thrilled. Woo Hoo.

The third Friday, January 25th and I was ready to wait for him again. But he didn’t ask and my girlfriends said, “No way! What if he’s asked someone else. You’ll be so embarrassed. We’re not going to let you wait and make a fool out of yourself.”

So after the game, I went back to the dorm. Not very happy.

A little while later the phone rang. “Where were you? I looked all over for you.” Blake asked.

I answered, “You didn’t ask. I thought you might have asked someone else.” Woo Hoo! Evening saved!

“Oh. I was hoping you’d be there. (pause) Well, my brother and his wife are coming for the game tomorrow night. Will you stay and go out with us after the game? I’d like you to meet them.”

What? He wants me to meet his family. Happy Dance!

AND – this is where my big mouth became a big problem.

The gym emptied the next night and I didn’t see Blake’s family. So, my friend, Sue, and I headed for the bathroom. (She’s the one who introduced us and was also dating someone on the team.)

Sue hadn’t heard about the events of the previous night . . . so thinking we were alone I filled her in on the details with high drama for added flair.

I told her how I’d wanted to wait after the game, what my roommates had said, and about the phone call later. And I ended with a playful, “I’ve totally got him right where I want him.”

You can probably guess where this is headed…

Yep.

We walked out of the bathroom and Brian, Blake’s brother, was standing there. I introduced myself and he said, “Hi. It’s nice to meet you. My wife will be out in a minute. She’s in the bathroom.”

Wait. What?

Kathy came calmly walking out. I could hardly look at her.

She smiled. Said, “Hi,” and never flinched.

My mind was spinning. She hates me. She’s going to tell Blake I’m a disaster waiting to happen. I just ruined my entire future.

Okay, so I was a little dramatic . . . but I was CRAZY about him. Now what?????

I hate to do this to you . . . but since this is getting long you’ll have to come back on Friday find out the rest of the story that has become family legend.

The moral of the story so far:

Pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

and

Whoever controls his mouth protects his own life. Whoever has a big mouth comes to ruin. Proverbs 13:3

  3. Hi Deb,

It’s interesting how things work out, even when we open mouth, insert foot!

Oh, sure, you’ve totally got us where you want us, then you drop us! Haha. I loved this story, and it gave me such a chuckle—that kind of thing only happens in movies, Deb!

  13. My goodness! How are mouth can get us into trouble before we even know it. I’m going over to read the rest of this story. Thank you for sharing with Thankful Thursdays.
