Important Truth For the Times You Doubt God’s Love

Life's problems can be painful and at times we're tempted to doubt God's love. But there is an important truth that can help us go through difficult seasons strong and blessed.

You’re devastated. You’ve received bad news and your world has been turned upside down.

And now, the enemy is tempting you to question your faith and doubt God’s love by whispering, “Where’s your God now? He must not really love you. If He loved you, He wouldn’t have allowed this to happen.”

His questions swirl through your mind mixing with your feelings of grief and despair.

But then the Spirit reminds you that…

God knows. He loves. He understands. He holds on . . . and He is faithful.

I love Psalm 103. It’s a beautiful reminder of who God is and what He does making it the perfect place for us to turn when the enemy tempts us to doubt God’s love.

Let’s look at how we can use David’s words to fight the enemy’s lies.

1. Praise God . . . not for our circumstances but for God’s goodness and love.

Let all that I am praise the Lord;
with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name.
Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things He does for me.

Psalm 103:1–2

2. Remember the good things God has done . . . focus on past blessings.

The Lord…

  • Forgives all my sins. (v. 3)
  • Heals my diseases. (v. 3)
  • Redeems me from eternal death. (v. 4)
  • Crowns me with mercy and love. (v. 4)
  • Gives good things. (v. 5)
  • Gives righteousness and justice. (v. 6)
  • Is compassionate and merciful. (v. 8)
  • Is slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. (v. 8)
  • Does not punish us as we deserve. (v. 10)

3. Trust His grace, mercy, and love . . . focus on who He says He is.

For His unfailing love toward those who fear Him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.

Psalm 103:11–12

4. Rest in faith assured that your Heavenly Father loves you . . . and His promises never fail.

The Lord is like a father to His children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear Him.
For He knows how weak we are;
He remembers we are only dust.

Psalm 103:22

You and I live in a creation that has been broken by sin. It is not what God desired for us but it is what He has allowed. He gives each of us free will. The ability to SEEK, KNOW, TRUST, LOVE, and OBEY Him. Or to choose selfishness and pride following the enemy’s lies and temptation.

I had a friend tell me recently that she didn’t know I stayed so strong in faith and upbeat in spirit as I’ve gone through so much pain and heartache.

I was truly humbled and had to admit that it hasn’t always been that way. I can remember a day years ago when I was so angry at what God was allowing that I shook my fist at the sky as I cried out to Him. I grumbled, I complained, and I doubted God’s love.

But God has always been faithful. He kept His promise…

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything you need.

Luke 12:31

David understood that truth. He lived in the same sinful world we live in and he faced pain and heartache but he also knew that God was faithful. He always keeps His promises.

Life's problems can be painful and at times we're tempted to doubt God's love. But there is an important truth that can help us go through difficult seasons strong and blessed.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for the Times You Doubt God’s Love

Father, Your goodness and love are evident in all You do. Yet, I confess there are times when my heart is overwhelmed by my circumstances and the enemy of my soul taunts me telling me that this pain is a reason for me to doubt Your love.

I’m coming to You asking for Your forgiveness and help. Your Word says that You know how weak we are. It tells us that You are slow to get angry and full of unfailing love. And that when You forgive, our sins are removed as far as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:8, 12, 14)

When I remember who You are and all You’ve done for me, I don’t know how I could ever doubt You. It’s true, You may not remove our problems and pain but too often we blame You for things You’ve allowed but others have caused . . . things I’ve caused myself.

So, by Your grace, I will trust Your promises and remember that if You allow something hard in my life, You will use it for good. You will use it to draw me close to You, teach me patience, and increase my faith. And through it all, I will trust You to give me strength and courage and fill me with hope.

I will praise You with my whole heart—with all that I am. I will remember the good things You have done for me and I will cling to Your promises. Father, as I go through life’s challenges, please hold me close. Lord, I trust You. Give me all I need to overcome whenever the enemy tempts me to doubt. Amen.

Life's problems can be painful and at times we're tempted to doubt God's love. But there is an important truth that can help us go through difficult seasons strong and blessed.

Paul wrote the following promise…

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.

1 Corinthians 10:13

So, when the enemy tempts you to doubt God’s love . . . remind him of God’s promises and remember these words from the Prophet Isaiah…

Have you never heard?
    Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
He gives power to the weak
    and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:18–31

May God bless you and encourage you when life’s circumstances cause you pain. And when the enemy tempts you to doubt God’s love, may you SEEK HIS TRUTH and TRUST HIS FAITHFULNESS and UNFAILING LOVE.

We would love to pray for you.

I agree with you about the process. It is hard to go through it. I call it “in the meantime”, meaning “MEAN” because that is how it feels. But, He gets me through it and I always find I am better for it. And above all, it does bring me into a closer relationship with Him.
