Do you know your eternal future is secure? Do you question whether or not God is listening to your prayers? What do you think when you hear the words eternity and prayer?

John addresses these concerns toward the end of his first letter.

Here’s his answer to the first question…

I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

1 John 5:13

The Life Application Notes add…

Eternal life is not based on feelings but on facts.

And the facts based on Scripture are that if you and I believe in Jesus, the Son of God, to be our Lord and Savior, we have been promised eternal life through Him.

Paul said it like this…

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9

So, if the enemy ever tempts you with doubt, ask yourself…

Have I given my life to Jesus through faith? Is it my heart’s desire to trust and obey Him by sharing His love?

If so, you can live with confidence that you are God’s child and part of His family now and forever.

What about our second question? What about God hearing your prayers?

John wrote…

And we are confident that He hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him. And since we know He hears us when we make our requests, we also know that He will give us what we ask for.

1 John 5:14–15

But wait. That doesn’t sound as assuring as I was hoping. Does God only hear prayers that please Him?

David wrote…

You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Psalm 139:2b, 23

God knows every spoken and unspoken prayer. However, I believe what John is saying is that He will not grant us things that don’t align with His will. He won’t affirm a prayer that asks Him to bless sin.

That may be why Jesus taught His disciples to pray like this…

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name,
Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven…”

Matthew 6:9–10 (NIV)

I always add “by me” to the words “Your will be done.” I need the reminder that obedience comes from my humble surrender.

And that’s the truth behind John’s verses above. God accomplishes His will in our lives and in the world. When our prayers align with His will, He will affirm them. You and I don’t know the future, and we don’t always know God’s will. But we can be confident that He will always make it happen.

So, we pray in faith. We pray for our needs, our loved ones, our country, and the world. We pray for those who are ill, those who grieve, and those in need. We pray to be used by Him to fulfill His will on earth. And we trust Him to give us what we need, being confident that it will be what we ask if it aligns with His plans and purposes.

You can trust His promise that your eternal future is secure in Jesus, and trust that the Lord hears your prayers. He loves you. You are His child.

Let’s pray…

Praying with Gratitude for the
Promise of Eternity and the Gift of Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us and for wanting us to KNOW You. You graciously gave us Your Word to teach us about the past, guide us in the present, and give us peace and hope for the future.

Your Word assures us that the future is eternal. Death is not the end. And because of Your perfect love, You want us to spend eternity with You. Because of our sin, we could never be good enough to live in Your presence. Our debt is too great, but Your love is greater.

So, You sent Jesus to pay the penalty we deserved. And when we surrender our lives to You through faith in Him, You promise that we have the assurance of eternal life with You.

As we live with hope about our forever future, there are times when we suffer physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually. Thank you for inviting us to bring our needs to You in prayer.

Thank you for giving us Your Word and Spirit to teach us what pleases You. I want to pray and live according to Your will. I believe You always know what is best for me. And on things that aren’t clear in Your will, I will still come to You in prayer and trust the Spirit to give me strength if Your will isn’t what I want.

You are truly gracious and loving, and I am so blessed. I give myself to You today and by Your grace, for all eternity. All because of Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Corrie Ten Boom wrote…

“You know, eternal life does not start when we go to heaven. It starts the moment you reach out to Jesus. He never turns His back on anyone. And He is waiting for you.”

May we pray faithfully and live our lives in accordance with God’s will. May we study His Word to know what pleases Him. May we surrender all our days to Him through faith in Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

And may we hold on tight to the truth that the Great I AM and Lord of All gave everything because He wanted to spend eternity with you and me.

Be BLESSED. Live with FAITH. And never stop PRAYING.

We would love to pray for you.
