How to Have Everything You Need to Live Today

If you want to truly live today, you have to let go of yesterday and tomorrow determined to live in the present trusting God to give you what you need to live your best life for His glory.

Some days I get up thinking about the big picture of life wondering what God wants me to do with however many years I have left.

But most of the time, I want to just get through today.

We all know the verse. Maybe you even know the song.

This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24

Rejoice, be glad, and live today.

It sounds simple, doesn’t it?

But if you’re like me, you often worry about yesterday’s mess and tomorrow’s potential problems, even though Jesus said…

Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.

Matthew 6:34a

Did you know the verse before it says…

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.

Matthew 6:33

What if we determined to seek God’s will each day and trust Him to give us what we need for the moment we’re in?

What if we chose to apply…

5 Ways to Have Everything You Need to Live Today

1. Let go of yesterday!

♥ SEEK God’s forgiveness for your sins, failures, mistakes, and messes.
♥ SEEK God’s help to forgive the people whose sins have hurt you.

I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.

Philippians 3:13

2. Refuse to worry about tomorrow!

Worry robs us of today’s peace and doesn’t do a thing to change tomorrow; it just keeps us from living the present day well.

“If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present.” ~ Roy T. Bennet

After we let go of the things that don’t belong—here are 3 things that do…

3. Love God With All Your Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength

♥ Heart – Make loving God our heart’s desire.
♥ Soul – Trust God and surrender our will (attitudes and intentions), emotions, thoughts, feelings, and bodies to the TRUTH of God’s Word.
♥ Mind – Use our knowledge, reason, and intellect to know and trust God more.
♥ Strength – Live to glorify God with all we say and do.

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.

Mark 12:30

4. Love Our Neighbors as We Love Ourselves.

♥ Be humble.
♥ Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
♥ Show compassion.
♥ Be encouraging.

Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Colossians 3:12

God promises to give us everything we need to focus on love … loving Him and loving others. Simply stated—God promises to give us what we need to do His will today.

He will give us what we need to be the spouse, parent, child, coworker, neighbor, and citizen He wants. He didn’t create us to “do it all.” He made us to accomplish His plans and purposes by loving well the people He puts around us.

And that often has more to do with our attitudes than our actions; so, let’s take Paul’s words to heart…

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

Colossians 3:23

Finally…

5. Live Each Day With An Eternal Perspective

And that may be the hardest thing to do because everything else demands our attention. The messes we need to confess and forgive, the problems we worry about, the challenges that keep us from loving and serving well, and…

Life is hard!  Which is why we need to maintain an eternal perspective. Everything changes when we choose to live today focused on Jesus and the future He is preparing for us. (John 14)

I love that many of the hard things of life lose their power when we ask ourselves a few questions:

  • Will this matter ten years from now?
  • Will I even remember next year?
  • What is God’s view of today’s trouble?
  • How does He want to use this in my life?
  • What do I need to do to live this moment for God’s glory?

Jesus is the way. He is eternal, the First and Last … the beginning and the end. And He’s given us a glimpse of His eternal plan so we can live today with His eternal perspective.

And I love that my attitude changes when I turn my focus from the problem to the problem Solver – to God Himself.

If you want to truly live today, you have to let go of yesterday and tomorrow determined to live in the present trusting God to give you what you need to live your best life for His glory.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Trust God’s Will and Live Today

Father, I don’t want to lose all that You want for me today because I’m reliving yesterday or anxious about tomorrow. I want to KNOW and TRUST Your will for me today because I believe You want what is best for me.

You know that when we love well, our relationships with You and the people in our lives are better. Please forgive me for being selfish and self-absorbed. When I focus on myself, it’s impossible to experience the joy You want for me.

I surrender this day to You. Please fill me with Your Spirit so I might have an attitude that pleases You and know what You want me to do and say. Please give me everything I need to love well. And when I feel overwhelmed by life, help me focus on Jesus and the future You are preparing. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

If you want to truly live today, you have to let go of yesterday and tomorrow determined to live in the present trusting God to give you what you need to live your best life for His glory.

The following verses keeps filling my heart…

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5–6

Whatever today brings, good, bad, or somewhere in between, we don’t have to face it alone. God invites us to give it to Him, to ask, seek, and knock trusting that He knows and promises to give us everything we need.

The Good News…

You and I can live today without guilt – when we know we are forgiven; without resentment – when we forgive others; without worry – when we trust God’s promises for the future; with love – when we focus on the love He gives us to share with others.

Today is a new day. It holds 24 hours of opportunities, choices, and attitudes. I want to make it the best day possible … 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, 86,400 breath-receiving seconds.

May we with God’s help…

1. Repent and forgive.
2. Reject worry.
3. Love God.
4. Love people.
5. All with an eternal perspective.

And live today for God’s glory!

Especially on this anniversary of 9/11, your words about trusting God and His will for us truly hit home, Deb. May we all surrender to Him as we leave worry behind and look at the world through an eternal perspective.
    Blessings!

    1. Thank you, Martha! Praying to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. He is the source of our faith, hope, and love. Blessings, dear friend!

  2. Deb, I am so grateful for this post today. This morning when I woke up and started my day, and settled down to do my devotional, the word “faithfulness” popped into my mind! I sat and pondered how faithful God has been to me. Yes indeed! The song “Great Is His Faithfulness” is so true. No matter how bad or how many times I have sinned and disobeyed the Lord, He is still faithful to me and his love is just amazing! He loves me anyway! He has gifted me with so many blessings. I am sure I am not worthy of a single one! Because of HIS love for me and HIS faithfulness, I know that I should never worry or fret about a single thing. The sad thing is that I still will. So, thankfully we have our Bible and verses that do bring peace of mind. And also, wonderful people like you, who God has chosen to encourage and remind us of HIS FAITHFULNESS.
I hope that you have a very safe and blessed day today and always. Blessings to you
    dear friend!
