Fair and Faithful: An Important Look at God’s Covenants

Since the first temptation, people have asked if God is fair and faithful. We can look at God's Covenants to learn that He is not only faith and faithful, but He is gracious, merciful, and loving.

We make promises and sign contracts, but do we still make covenants?

God’s covenants were binding agreements He made with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David.

David wrote…

The Lord always keeps His promises;
He is gracious in all He does.

Psalm 145:13

The Bible teaches us that God’s Old Covenant was God’s promise to bless and protect the Jewish nation throughout countless generations if they trusted Him and obeyed His commands.

God said…

“You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the Lord.

Leviticus 22:31

So, He began with…

“You must not have any other god but me.”

Exodus 20:3

But the people of Israel wouldn’t obey. They worshiped idols, pride, self, humanity, wealth, and accomplishments.

God loved them so much, He sent Jesus, the Messiah, to give a New Covenant, but even after His death and resurrection, many Jews still rejected Him.

Paul grieved for them…

My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them. They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed His glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them His law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping Him and receiving His wonderful promises.

Romans 9:2–4

The Bible Notes describe Paul’s statement as a “rare depth of love” … a willingness to sacrifice himself so others could be saved.

Why have I shared all of this? Because I’ve seen several discussions about God’s covenant promise to Israel and their future salvation.

A discussion for that time…

God chooses to show mercy to some, and He chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen.

Well then, you might say, “Why does God blame people for not responding? Haven’t they simply done what He makes them do?”

Romans 9:18–19

A question that continues today…

Is God being fair like He promised?

A question that Paul answered with…

No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God?

Romans 9:20

Scripture tells us that God is love, and that…

God, our Savior, wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

1 Timothy 2:3b–4

This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

1 John 4:10

Let all the world look to me for salvation!
For I am God; there is no other.

Isaiah 45:22

Jew, gentile, male, female, tall, short, with a fair or dark complexion, one denomination or another, we are all saved the same way…

By grace through faith in Christ Jesus!

God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.

Ephesians 2:8

I don’t understand why some respond to God’s mercy and grace with faith, and others to not.

But I do know He is fair and faithful. He wants everyone to LOVE, TRUST, and OBEY Him through faith in Jesus. And He will keep His Covenant promise to bless and keep all who do.

Since the first temptation, people have asked if God is fair and faithful. We can look at God's Covenants to learn that He is not only faith and faithful, but He is gracious, merciful, and loving.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Giving Thanks for God’s Covenants
He is Fair and Faithful

Heavenly Father, You are God, and there is no other. Oh, how the enemy tempts us to doubt You when we don’t understand Your ways. Throughout time, You have shown Yourself to be fair and faithful. Yet, in every generation, there have been those who have chosen to reject You and all that You offer.

Thank you for being patient with our confusion and for giving us Your written Word. You made covenants that Your chosen people rejected. So, You gave a New Covenant through Jesus because You are loving, fair, and faithful.

You love so perfectly that You have always wanted us to join You in an eternally blessed relationship. You gave Your Son as the ultimate sacrifice so that we might be forgiven by Your grace.

I am sorry for the times I have foolishly questioned Your plans and purposes. I foolishly forget that You see the eternal while I live in the present. By the power of Your Spirit, I believe Your Covenant promises. Please give me everything I need to TRUST and OBEY You. And help me share Your love and the promise of Jesus. In whose name I pray. Amen.

Since the first temptation, people have asked if God is fair and faithful. We can look at God's Covenants to learn that He is not only faith and faithful, but He is gracious, merciful, and loving.

I love this quote about God’s Covenants by Charles Spurgeon…

“Settle this in your heart: Whether I am up or down, the Lord Jesus is the same. Whether I sing or sigh, the promise is true and the Promiser is faithful. Whether I stand on the summit or am hidden in the vale the covenant stands fast and everlasting love abides.”

God is fair and faithful. His Covenants have always been for the good of His people. When we don’t understand His ways, we can always trust His perfect love. Why? Because He sent His Son for us.

God did not and does not reject people. He made a way through Jesus for us all KNOW and LOVE Him.

May the Lord fill you with peace, hope, and great encouragement today as you trust in Him.

We would love to pray for you.

  2. I love what you said when you said, “when we don’t understand His ways, we can always trust His perfect love.” That is such a wonderful and true statement! So many times, I questioned, why! It has taken a long time to finally realize once and for all that all God wants if for my good. He never lets anything come to pass that is not for the good. I trust HIM. Oh, how I trust HIM! I am very grateful for this time in my life, and for the wisdom I have acquired. I am not saying that I have it all under control, bur sure am grateful for what I have learned and accepted so far. I love the Lord Jesus Christ. Heart and Soul!!
Thank you once again for a wonderful lesson. I appreciate you beyond words.
I hope that you have a wonderful and safe week.
    Hugs!

    1. Thank you, Sue. It’s so true. Even after this painful year-and-a- half, I trust that God has a good plan and purpose. I listened to Mercy Me’s song Even If earlier today. It’s one of my favorites. I KNOW He can but “even if” He doesn’t, I KNOW I can trust His Love. Blessings and HUGS!
