Through Christ, You Can’t Be Separated From God’s Love

Have you ever been so filled with fear and worry that you’ve questioned God’s love? Does watching the news make you anxious about the future?
Jesus said that before He returned, “there would be wars and rumors of war.” (Matthew 24:6)
Although there have always been wars, it feels like there is an excessive amount of conflict in the world now. The news is filled with images showing chaos in the streets and ugly divisiveness between races, religions, and moral standards.
Anytime we’re tempted to let it overwhelm us, we need to ask Paul’s all-important question…
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
Romans 8:35
What’s his answer?
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
Romans 8:37
Wars, conflict, and chaos, it’s all only temporary! Christ Jesus has won the victory against sin, death, and the power of satan. And through faith in Him, that overwhelming victory is ours.
Let’s read the rest of Paul’s answer to the question, where we find some of the most reassuring words in Scripture.
I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38–39
Nothing in all of creation can separate us from God’s love.
Jesus proclaimed…
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and He is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.
John 10:27–29
Everyone who SEEKs, KNOWs, LOVEs, TRUSTs, and OBEYs through faith in Jesus, can be absolutely certain that nothing can remove them from God’s gracious love.
The Life Application Bible Notes add…
“Paul exclaims that it is impossible to be separated from Christ. His death for us is proof of His unconquerable love.”
Do you know what that means?
It means that in Christ, we can stand against the enemy when he tries to manipulate us with fear. We can live with the confident assurance that we are eternally secure in Jesus.
So, when you’re faced with news that frightens you, resist it with God’s Word…
- The Spirit who lives in [me] is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. 1 John 4:4
- [I will] put on every piece of God’s armor, [to] resist the enemy. Ephesians 6:13
- God is faithful; He will not let [me] be tempted beyond what [I] can bear. 1 Corinthians 10:13a
- The Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen [me] and protect [me] from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
- I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20
By grace, we are surrounded by God’s love. No fears, worries, or powers of hell can separate us from Him! We can endure with hope through Christ, who is with us and gives us strength.

Let’s pray…
A Prayer of Praise
You Can’t Be Separated From God’s Love
Father, Your Word tells us that You are LOVE. Not just that You are loving, You are, but that You are the very definition of LOVE.
We have foolishly distorted love as You intended. We define it selfishly, thinking only about the warm, fuzzy feeling we have when attraction and desire rule our emotions. We love people and things, places and delectable delights. We love with imperfect emotions, but You love perfectly.
Because You are LOVE, You did not forsake us in our sinfulness, but sent Jesus as the sacrifice to save us. You gave us Your Word and the Holy Spirit to help us KNOW, LOVE, TRUST, and OBEY You.
Because You are gracious LOVE, You provide everything I need to stand against the enemy when he taunts me with guilt and tempts me with pride and selfishness. You are my safety when I am afraid and my hope when I am worried and anxious.
And through the Spirit, You make it possible for me to KNOW my Shepherd’s voice, confident that He is safely leading me to my eternal home with You.
I praise, worship, and adore You. Thank you for never allowing anything to separate me from Your LOVE. Thank you for Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Paul asked…
Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
Romans 8:35
Sometimes it feels that way. When we question why or how God could allow our pain. When we wonder why we can’t feel His presence, or when we’re tempted to question His love.
But when we do, we can fight back with this powerful promise…
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Romans 8:37–38a
However, we feel. When the enemy taunts us and life feels overwhelming, we can confidently say these words of Hannah Whitall Smith…
“Nothing can separate you from God’s love, absolutely nothing. God is enough for time, God is enough for eternity. God is enough!”
So, give Him all your fear and uncertainty. Confess your sins and profess your faith. Because through our Lord and Savior, Jesus, absolutely nothing can separate you from God’s love.
He is enough now and always.
We would love to pray for you.

Oh, how I love Romans 8:37,38 and 39! Those verses have carried me through many a trial and insecure moments. God never changes and neither does HIS love for us through Jesus and HIS sacrifice for us, going to the cross on our behalf.
