People who trust and follow Jesus use the word “grace” often.

We’re told that “grace” is an essential part of faith but what exactly is grace?

The Dictionary defines grace:

  1. Miriam Webster Dictionary – “the unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification.”
  2. The Oxford Dictionary – “the free and unmerited favour of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.”

And more specifically – what is God’s grace?

Maybe you’ve seen or heard this acrostic for GRACE – God’s riches at Christ’s expense.

My favorite definition of God’s Grace is – God giving us what we don’t deserve.
Because of the way it pairs with the definition of God’s Mercy – God not giving us what we do deserve.

HELPS Word-Study says the following about God’s grace – “Both [the Greek and Hebrew] refer to God freely extending Himself (His favor, grace), reaching (inclining) to people because He is disposed to bless (be near) them.”

Some synonyms for grace are – kindness, compassion, generosity, and tenderness.

But…

God’s grace adds a very important component.

Grace is God’s kindness when kindness is completely undeserved.

God’s grace is forgiveness even when it is extravagant and unwarranted. It is loving even when that love has been rejected. It is willingly sacrificing Himself for the benefit of those He loves.

We miss an important truth when we think of God’s grace as simply kindness and compassion. God’s grace was and is His response to our rebellion and sin . . . grace cost Him everything.

Grace is God punishing Jesus for our sin.

God, in His grace, freely makes us right in His sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding His blood. Romans 3:24–25a

Grace is God making us free.

God is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins.  Ephesians 1:7

Grace is God working in us to make us more like Jesus.

[God] saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:8,10

God’s grace changes everything.

God’s amazing grace heals our yesterdays, strengthens our today, and provides hope for tomorrow.

Let’s pause and thank God for the gift of His Amazing Grace!

A Prayer of Gratitude
for the Blessing of God’s Grace

Father, I want to simply receive Your gifts with humble gratitude but pride so often gets in the way. I want to believe I’m good enough . . . that I can trust and obey You on my own. The enemy consistently tempts me with ego-focused attitudes and activities and I fail again and again. I’m so sorry.

Even as I say, please forgive me . . . I’m overwhelmed by Your promises. You tell me that when I confess my sins to You, You faithfully forgive me. (1 John 1:9) You promise that Your grace is sufficient to overcome my weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9) You say that I can confidently look to the future with hope because of the undeserved grace I have received through Jesus. (Acts 15:11)

Your wonderful grace has set me free from the burden of my past and makes me righteous that I might prayerfully come before You with my worship and praise and my needs and requests. How do I begin to thank You? What can I give to You, the One who is sovereign over everything?

Father, I give You all my love . . . heart, soul, mind, and strength. I give You my will and ask You to give me wisdom and guide me along the path You have prepared for me. I thank and praise You my gracious Heavenly Father. I pray in the name of my Savior, Jesus. Amen.

God’s grace is not dependent on us it is simply given to us.

So tell your story. Share His love and tell people about all the ways you have experienced the blessing of God’s grace.

I love what Luke wrote in Acts…

The apostles gave powerful witness to the resurrection of the Master Jesus, and grace was on all of them.

Acts 4:33

And by His grace, you and I can have confident faith…

“Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.” ~Martin Luther

Yes, we are saved by grace alone through faith alone…

God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.

Ephesians 2:8
