5 Useful Ways You Can Help Your Soul Prosper

What does it take to help a soul prosper? When was the last time you thought about your soul and whether or not it was prospering?

There are so many things vying for our attention: things to do, places to be, people to engage, and entertainment to distract.

The thought hit me as I read 3 John 1:2…

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

(NASB)

How do you define your soul?

Dictionary.com defines it as: “The spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.”

My favorite definition comes from John Ortberg’s book, Soul Keeping…

”Your soul is not just something that lives on after your body dies. It’s the most important thing about you. It is your life.” 

Your soul is who you are. George MacDonald wrote…

“Never tell a child, ‘you have a soul.’ Teach him, ‘you are a soul; you have a body.'”

The Bible repeatedly tells us to turn to God and love Him with all our hearts and souls. Jesus said…

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

Matthew 22:37

With all of life’s distractions, how do you and I help our souls prosper?

5 Ways to Help Your Soul Prosper

1. Trust God

You love Him even though you have never seen Him. Though you do not see Him now, you trust Him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting Him will be the salvation of your souls.

1 Peter 1:9

2. Obey God

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Romans 12:2

3. Worship God

Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him.

Romans 12:1

4. Thank God

Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Colossians 2:7

5. Hope in God

My soul is quiet and waits for God alone. My hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and the One Who saves me. He is my strong place. I will not be shaken.

Psalm 62:5–6 (NCV)

The good news is that we don’t have to do those things alone. The Lord has given us His Spirit and the family of faith to help us.

Because of His gracious love, He promises to give you and me what we need for our souls to prosper.

A Prayer for God to Help Your Soul Prosper

Heavenly Father, Your Word says that You want us to love and obey You with all our heart and soul. The best answer I can find to define my soul is that it is the core of who You made me to be. My soul is who I am. It contains my character, emotions, wisdom, and knowledge. It is the part of me that KNOWS, LOVES, and TRUSTS You, and the part that lives forever.

I want my soul to prosper. I want to grow in faith and wisdom. I want my emotions and character to please You. I want to worship You with joy and live Your truth each day. I understand that if I want my soul to prosper, I need You.

The enemy knows that the easiest way to keep my soul from prospering is to distract me with worldly foolishness. Please help me keep Your Word before me and to put into practice the ways I can open myself to Your Spirit and help me grow closer to You.

Please work in me and prompt me to trust and obey Your will as Your Word and Spirit reveal it to me. Please give me a heart that longs to worship You with all that I am. May I daily thank and praise You for who You are and all You’ve done, and remind me that You are my hope now and always.

You are gracious love with and within me through my Lord and Savior, Jesus. I love You. Please help my soul prosper in Jesus. Amen.
