Do you have a list of helpful questions you ask yourself as you prepare for the coming week?

Do you ever get to the end of the week – knowing you wanted to make changes only to realize you frustratingly repeated several self-sabotaging bad habits?

Maybe you want to get a new job, exercise regularly, lose weight, write a book, build better relationships, improve your health, return to school, etc.

We can all relate to the challenge of trying to make life changes. Even with the best intentions, we often end up like Paul doing those things we don’t want to do and not doing what we know we need to do.

I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.

Romans 7:19

What if there were some helpful questions you and I could ask ourselves to start changing our thinking and turn our good intentions into reality?

Here’s a list of things to ask that will encourage us to make the changes we want and the changes the Lord says He wants for us.

10 Helpful Questions
You Need to Ask Every Week

1. What goals do I want to achieve this week?

We’re more likely to reach our goals if we make them specific and believe they are attainable.

2. What is the main thing I want to accomplish this week?

List 1 or 2 reachable goals that will help you progress.

3. What were my greatest blessings last week?

List the ways You felt God’s touch on your life this week.

From [Jesus’] abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.

John 1:16

4. Where did I fail to do God’s will and work toward my goals?

List the things you did or failed to do … ask God for forgiveness and help to improve.

5. What can I learn from my failures?

List the life lessons you can grasp from the mistakes you made.

Teach me Your ways, O Lord,
that I may live according to your truth!
Grant me purity of heart,
so that I may honor you.

Psalm 86:11

6. What thoughts and behaviors are holding me back? What can I do about them?

Think about the ways your attitude is self-sabotaging. Give it all to God and ask Him to help you change your thinking.

7. Where do I need to quit procrastinating?

Note the small goals you’re putting off and work to accomplish them first. Then give yourself a pat on the back for making progress.

8. Where did I waste the most time last week?

We all need downtime. It’s important to rest but it’s easy to get lost in the world of technology when we could be making a difference in our own lives and the lives of others.

9. How can I best organize my time for the coming week?

Now … grab your planner and streamline your schedule: group things that can be done together, make a focus list, simplify as much as possible, and try not to over-book.

10. What am I most worried about and what can I do about it?

Name your worries. If there is something to do – do it! If not – give it to God and leave it with Him.

Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Matthew 6:34

A Prayer to Invite God to Help You Accomplish
Your Goals and His Plans and Purposes

Father, Your Word tells me that You created me with specific plans and purposes. Thank you. You know everything about me and want me to use my gifts and abilities to love You and the people around me … to help the world see Your love in action.

I am sorry for failing to love as well as I should. I can be self-absorbed and impatient. I ask You to forgive me for repeating bad habits that prevent me from reaching the goals You want for me.

By Your grace, please be with me and work within me to give me the strength I need to trust and obey Your perfect will. I believe the goals You have for me will help me accomplish Your will and give You glory. And I believe those goals will be reached one step at a time. So, I ask You to guide me today and help me follow where You lead.

Please help me realize and celebrate small moments of progress and help me recognize, confess, and change the things I do that are self-defeating. I want to organize my time well, serve You enthusiastically, count my blessings, and leave the rest to You.

I give it all to You, Lord. Please help me live Your plans and purposes for Your glory. Amen.
