We celebrate Jesus.

And we should!

We pray to “our Father.”

As Jesus taught us.

But the Holy Spirit…

I wonder if we have a harder time talking about the Spirit because we can’t picture Him.

We have many images of Jesus and we can visualize entering throne room and approaching the Father of grace in prayer . . . but how can you and I envision a Spirit?

Paul was now on his third missionary journey. Luke wrote:

Paul . . . arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

Acts 19:1b–2

And they replied…

“No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

Acts 19:3

Paul then explained Jesus’ promised gift of the Spirit to them. He baptized them in the name of Jesus and laid hands on them in prayer, and…

The Holy Spirit came on them.

Acts 19:6

Jesus said…

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.

Acts 1:8

So, let’s take a look at what the Bible says about the power that the Holy Spirit gives.

The Holy Spirit is the Advocate sent by God to remind us of the truth about Jesus.

When the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 14:26

He gives power, teaches, and reminds. Let’s take a look at the other things the Spirit, our Helper, does and gives:

  • The Holy Spirit Is With and Within In Us. – John 14:27
  • The Spirit Intercedes (prays) for Us. – Romans 8:26
  • The Spirit Helps Us in Our Weakness. – Romans 8:26
  • The Spirit Gives us Strength. – Ephesians 3:16
  • The Holy Spirit Guides Us with Wisdom. – 1 Corinthians 2:13
  • The Spirit Gives the Gift of Faith. – Ephesians 1:15
  • The Spirit Comforts Us – John 15:26
  • The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Our Sin and Our Need a Savior – John 16:8
  • The Spirit Guides Us to the Truth – John 16:13
  • The Spirit Gives Us Hope – Romans 15:13
  • The Spirit Helps Us Live with Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,  Gentleness, Self-control. – Galatians 5:22

A Prayer Thanking God for His Spirit’s Help
and for a Willing Heart to Follow

Father, You knew we needed a Savior and You loved us so much You sent Jesus to save us. You knew that after sin entered the world it would be full of temptation and adversity. You knew we would need a Helper so You sent us the Holy Spirit. You knew we needed forgiveness, love, faith hope, and someone to guide us in Your truth . . . and You provided it all. Thank you for Your Spirit’s help!

Please forgive me for the times I let burdens distract me. Forgive me for listening to the misleading of loud voices. Forgive me for wanting and chasing after the temporary things of this life more than I SEEK You and Your Kingdom.

Lord, please make me mindful and aware of Your Spirit’s presence in my life. Please make me sensitive to the things He wants to give me, things like . . . greater faith, wisdom, comfort, strength, guidance, hope, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, and love. The one thing You call Your greatest command and the thing that lasts forever is love. Please help me. It is my heart’s desire to follow You faithfully with a tender humble willing heart. Please help me by Your grace by the power of Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Friend, when you feel overwhelmed . . . like it’s too hard to go on. When you’re confused and frustrated, doubtful and weak, broken by your own or someone else’s sin, the Spirit of the Lord is with you to help you.

In Christ, you are never alone. His Spirit is with and within you. May we recognize His voice, trust His guidance, and follow where He leads.

On today’s note write:

The Spirit of the Lord is my Helper. I am not alone!

May God bless you and keep you and fill you with the power of His Spirit today!

  1. Thanking God with all my heart for the gift of His Holy Spirit. May we be sensitive always to His voice.
    Blessings, Deb!

    1. Amen, Martha! I join you with that pray! May my heart always be open and listening. Blessings, my friend!

  2. Hello Deb, I have been struggling with this the last week. I pray to God the Father as Jesus taught, I ask “In Jesus’s name”. I ask God to fill me with His Holy Spirit instead of The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity and I worry I am giving Him less importance than God the Father and God the Son. Should we specifically mention all three members of the Holy Trinity in our prayers every day?

    1. Hi Angela, thanks so much for visiting. What a great question? I think God welcomes our prayer without rules or restrictions. He just wants us to spend time with Him. This is one of my favorite verses – Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. (Romans 8:26) I don’t believe we need to specifically pray to the Holy Spirit. I do sometimes thank Him for the blessings He gives as I do the Father and Jesus. All three persons of the Trinity are worthy of our praise. But we don’t have to have a formula for our prayers. I love to just talk with the Lord about the things that are going on in my life . . . asking Him for His help and guidance. God be with you and bless you!
