How to Begin Each Day with One Powerful Prayer

Psalm 143 contains four phrases that make up one powerful prayer. A prayer to boldly pray anytime of the day or night. A prayer to give peace, strength, and the assurance of God's love.

How do you start the day?

I wish I could tell you that I begin my day with a powerful prayer … that before my feet hit the floor I have thanked the Lord and surrendered my heart.

But…

Currently, I jump out of bed and hurry into a morning routine to help Rev and Sadie get ready for their day. Thankfully, 45 minutes later, we’re dressed, Sadie’s fed, and Rev and I are able to sit down with our Bibles, prayer journals, and coffee.

One of my favorite verses is David’s reminder that the Lord invites us to prayer…

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.”
    And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”

Psalm 27:8

Think about that … the Lord invites us to come and talk with Him about everything and anything believing that He is faithful to listen with and respond in love.

But the enemy of our souls wants us to doubt God’s faithfulness and question the truth of His Word. He relentlessly attacks us with distractions and discouragement to keep us from turning to the Lord in prayer.

That means we need God’s help to stand strong on a firm faith foundation. And it’s one of the reasons I am blessed and encouraged by David’s words in Psalm 143

Hear my prayer, O Lord;
    listen to my plea!
    Answer me because You are faithful and righteous.

Let me hear of Your unfailing love each morning,
    for I am trusting You.
Show me where to walk,
    for I give myself to You.
Rescue me from my enemies, Lord;
    I run to You to hide me.
Teach me to do Your will,
for You are my God.
May Your gracious Spirit lead me forward
    on a firm footing.

Psalm 143:1, 8–10

God is faithful and righteous. Always!

I love that the Lord invites us just to come and talk with Him. He invites us to share our feelings, struggles, joys, problems, and anything else we want to share.

So, you and I can go to Him and ask Him to speak His love over our lives. We can surrender our all and ask Him to guide us and hide us, to rescue us and strengthen us. We can ask Him to fill us with His Spirit and teach us His truth.

The writer of Hebrews said…

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:16

How do we start the day with one powerful prayer?

We respond to the Father’s loving invitation to “come and talk.” But before we pour out all our personal needs, let’s keep it simple with four phrases that become one powerful prayer from Psalm 143…

Father God…

  • I thank and praise You. (v. 5–6)
  • I give myself to You. (v. 8)
  • Please protect me from the enemy. (v. 9)
  • Guide me and teach me that I might trust and obey Your will. (v. 10)

Childlike faith trusts that we can go to our Heavenly Father as we start the day and before we close our eyes to rest and any time we need His assurance and peace day or night.

We can trust His promise…

My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth!
He will not let you stumble;
    the One who watches over you will not slumber.

Psalm 121:2–3

Let’s pray…

A Powerful Prayer to Start the Day

Father God, I thank and praise You for the countless blessings You have poured into my life. I thank You for sending Jesus to save me and for giving me faith … for allowing me to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You.

Lord God, I give myself to You. Please forgive me for my flaws and failures and by Your grace, give me the wisdom and strength I need to TRUST and OBEY Your will.

Please guard my heart and mind from the enemy’s attacks. Help me by the power of Your Spirit, to recognize his lies and temptations
and by Your grace, help me stand on the truth of Your promises.

Please teach me and guide me as I study Your Word and cling to You through Your promises. I love You, Lord, and ask You to give me everything I need to follow wherever You lead me today.

I bring to You all of my needs and the needs of my friends and family __________ trusting Your love, care, and compassion. In Jesus’ name, watch over me this day and use me for Your glory. Amen.
