How To Know for Sure That God Loves You Personally

The Bible tells us that God loved the world…

For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

DJohn 3:16 (CSB)

God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His one and only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

1 John 4:9 (CSB)

But, do you ever have moments when you wonder if God loves you personally?

When life is challenging and our prayers feel like they’re bouncing off the ceiling it’s hard to feel God’s personal love.

I wonder if David was experiencing one of those moments when he wrote…

Lord, what is a human that you care for him,
a son of man that you think of him?
A human is like a breath;
his days are like a passing shadow.

Psalm 144:3–4 (CSB)

Does the enemy ever tempt you to question God’s love when He feels quiet and far away? Does he taunt you with a word that says … in a world full of millions of people why would God love and care about one insignificant individual like you?

Understandably, we might feel insignificant when we think about the world’s billions of people. When major disasters like wars, weather disasters, and illnesses spread like wildfire. Yes, it’s easy to wonder why God would think about our personal circumstances.

But the truth is…

God loves you personally! God loves me personally!

Jesus told His followers…

I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninetynine righteous people who don’t need repentance.

Luke 15:7 (CSB)

Remember, there was a time when you were that one in a hundred and so was I.

God loved us so much that He sent His Son. He loves us so much that He comes after us when we wander away. And He loves us so much He knocks at the door of our hearts.

See! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Revelation 3:20 (CSB)

David was aware of God’s personal love and care for him … he began Psalm 144 with the following statements of faith:

Blessed be the Lord…

He is my faithful love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer.
He is my shield, and I take refuge in Him

Psalm 144:1a, 2a (CSB)

David wasn’t recognizing the Lord’s collective faithfulness, power, and faithful love for the world, he was focused on the truth that God loved him personally.

And…

God loves you personally!

Even when life is hard and God seems silent, we can trust His love. We can say with confidence—God is my faithful love, my strength, my deliverer, my peace, my hope … and I take refuge in Him.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer of Thanks and Praise
God Loves You Personally

Heavenly Father, Thank you for loving me. Even when I don’t feel lovable. Even when the world rejects me. Your Word tells me that You love me. You created me to love and even though You know everything about me … You love me!

I praise You for making me for Your plans and purposes. I praise You for loving me so much that You sent Jesus to save me. I praise You for allowing me to KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You. I praise You for who You are and for all You have done and continue to do in my life.

I realize that You could look at all You have created and just leave us on our own without Your personal care and compassion. But Your Son, Jesus, said that You watch over and care for individual sparrows and know how many hairs are on our heads at any given moment.

David wrote that You know everything I think, do, and say … and still, Your thoughts about me are precious. Your love is too great for me to comprehend or understand fully. I am humbled and oh so very grateful.

By Your grace, I surrender my life to You. I entrust myself to Your care and keeping. I love You, Lord. Amen.

David ended this Psalm with the following words…

Happy are the people whose God is the Lord.

Psalm 144:15b

The Christian Standard Study Bible Notes add this explanation of the word “happy” used here…

“Happy expresses the sense of joy and satisfaction in one’s state or circumstances.”

When you and I surrender our lives and welcome God as the Lord of our lives, we can live joyful and satisfied. Even when He seems quiet and our prayers are not being answered according to our timetable, we can be sure that God loves each of us personally.

Yes, God loves you personally.

You can trust His faithful love and His promises to give you strength and hope. He will hold you, help you carry your burdens, and give you a future filled with hope.

Remember Psalm 139…

O Lord, you have examined my heart
    and know everything about me.
You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

Psalm 139:1, 4–6

So, whatever you’re struggling with today … whatever prayer you’re waiting on Him to answer, remember…

God loves you personally! Pause today and rest in His care with thanks and praise.

We would love to pray for you.

    1. Dave, I love that I can promise you that you are forgiven by God’s grace. He promises – “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) I am so very sorry that your wife is so ill. We are adding both of you to our prayers. My husband, Rev, is struggling with weakness and difficulty breathing caused by ALS. We pray and pray for healing as well. I just keep reminding myself that even when I can’t see what God is doing, I can trust His love. God bless you and your dear wife. May He hold you close and give you His peace.
