How to Know the Blessing of Your One Primary Purpose

We have God-given purposes in our lives but did you know that we all have one primary purpose. It's a purpose that changes every part of our lives forever and blesses us more that we can imagine.

What’s your purpose?

It took me a long time to understand that I have just one primary purpose. Especially when I consider the definition of the word purpose…

The reason something was made or created. The reason it exists.

I used to believe that my purpose was to be a wife, a mom, a teacher, and a “Christian.” Those are some of the things God created me to be and do but they are not my primary purpose.

My primary purpose is to SEEK, KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST GOD (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

To surrender my life to Him and do my best to obey His will for His glory.

Why? Because I have been created by God for God…

And so have you.

The Spirit inspired Paul to write…

Christ made everything in the heavens and on the earth. He made everything that is seen and things that are not seen. He made all the powers of heaven. Everything was made by Him and for Him.

Colossians 1:16 (NLV)

That means living for Jesus is our primary purpose. The world wants us to believe that our purpose is found in doing things that make us happy, popular, and prosperous but the truth is our primary purpose is being who God created us to be for His glory.

And God knows that’s the best way to find joy and happiness. The more we focus on ourselves and worldly ideas of a meaningful life, the more miserable we will be.

The enemy of our souls wants us to focus on ourselves … our wants and desires. But God has created us for something so much more—so much better.

A few weeks ago, I finished my prayer time by asking the Lord if there was something He wanted me to know and share with you.

And my heart heard Him say…

Tell them I want to be involved in every detail of their lives.

I see them.
I care about them.
I am with them.
I love them.

Tell them that…

The Great I AM says, “I LOVE YOU! You can trust Me.”

As I took some time to think about His words, the Spirit laid these truths on my heart…

I can trust the Lord to have my best interest at heart.
I can believe that every one of His Words and promises is absolute truth.
I can live with every moment confident that God will meet my needs with love.

His primary purpose for each of His children is for their good and His glory.

We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.

Romans 8:28

When you and I make it our purpose to use our God-given blessings, gifts, and abilities to…

  1. Glorify Jesus in every area of our lives.
  2. His Spirit helps us live our purpose with humble peace and contentment.

That’s the blessing of living our lives with one primary purpose.

This same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Now all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen.

Philippians 4:19–20

If you’re like me, you know that no matter how hard you try … you get distracted and fall short of living our primary purpose.

But the good news is that we don’t have to do it alone…

God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.

Philippians 2:13

Because…

He sees you. He cares about you. He is with you. He loves you. He is the Great, I AM … the One for whom everything and anything is possible.

We have God-given purposes in our lives but did you know that we all have one primary purpose. It's a purpose that changes every part of our lives forever and blesses us more that we can imagine.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer Asking God to Help You
Live Your Primary Purpose

Father, You created all things for Your plans and purposes. You created a beautiful world and each of us to live in relationship with You and with each other. You created us with gifts and abilities to be used for Your glory.

Please forgive us. Please forgive me. We have listened to worldly lies and selfishly lived for ourselves. We’ve let busyness and distractions keep us from spending time with You. We don’t SEEK You the way You desire and because of that we fail to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST You the way we could. We fail to glorify You with obedience.

Please help us. By the power of Your Spirit, please help me surrender my life to You so that I might live with one primary purpose. Help me prayerfully listen for Your direction so that I might know Your personal plans and purposes for me … the things You want me to say and do each day. Guide me and by Your grace and strengthen me to trust and obey. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

We have God-given purposes in our lives but did you know that we all have one primary purpose. It's a purpose that changes every part of our lives forever and blesses us more that we can imagine.

Pastor John Piper wrote…

“It was becoming clearer and clearer that if I wanted to come to the end of my life and not say, “I’ve wasted it!” then I would need to press all the way in, and all the way up, to the ultimate purpose of God and join Him in it. If my life was to have a single, all-satisfying, unifying passion, it would have to be God’s passion.

So, if you want to live your primary purpose…

SEEK God. (Matthew 6:33)
Be still and KNOW God. (Psalm 46:10)
LOVE God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Mark 12:30)
TRUST God. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
OBEY God. (1 John 2:5)

Because the closer we are to God by pursuing our primary purpose, the more we will understand and know His everyday plans and purposes that He gives us to bless us and give Him glory.

We would love to pray for you.

I so needed this reminder and its inspiration today, Deb. I do tend to get caught up in the busyness of the day instead of simply resting in God.
    Blessings!

    1. I’m glad it encouraged you, Martha! I needed the reminder, too. Blessings, my friend!

  2. I am a Catholic I am a God fearing person, I pray regularly but I love reading various posts on Jesus. I felt peace in my heart after saying this prayer sometimes I myself doubt but then again realize my life has not been easy it was only because our loving saviour I could travel this journey. I am struggling a lot in my life but I live carefree because my God is more worried for me than I am. I am thankful to God for everything he has done and still doing in my life. He has worked many wonders in my life. I thank you and love you Lord in Jesus mighty name Amen.

    1. Hi, Athena. You did a beautiful job of describing the struggle so many of us face daily. We all deal with life’s difficulties and the enemy of our souls loves to use them to distract us and pull us away from the Lord. But God is faithful and consistently knocks on the door of our hearts. (Revelation 3:20) He never gives up on us, praise God! May He be with you and bless you!

  3. Kathy Francescon says:

A beautiful AMEN to your words today, Deb! We are all born to glorify God and lead others to Him…our sole purpose is God! During a time in my life though, I did stray. Of course soon, finding out that every door I opened and walked through, turned out to be a wrong door. I was a mess…and I will never forget my older brother telling me “this is not about you.” I ask, well who is it about? He told me when I figured that out, I would find the peace I was so desperately searching for. It took awhile, but Praise God, in His unfailing love and tender mercy, He led me back to HIS PERFECT DOOR! The only “Perfect Door” we can ever open and walk through here on earth!
Less of me, more of Thee, is my thought and prayer everyday! Praise God, I am loved, I am chosen and His purpose is the joy of my life and the peace of my heart! Keeping you oh so close in thought and prayer, dear friend. And thank you for being such a great example “of purpose” to follow! With love and admiration…

    1. Thanks, Kathy! He guides and leads and we are so tempted to wander. What a blessing to know that our Good Shepherd never gives up on us. I’m praying to continually rest in Him and faithfully follow His purposes. I pray to live as though I believe that His grace is sufficient. Blessings and hugs, dear friend!

  4. Deb, I don’t know how you do it, but you always seem to give just what I need right at the time I need it. I loved the post Monday when you quoted from the author, “Think of yourself less, not less of yourself.” I tend to do that so much. I place the guilt on me and that then starts me on the path of “Oh woe is me!” If we are honest, like Kathy is, (and I admire her honesty so much) I think we have all been guilty of straying off the path, but thankfully, we have those who care enough (Kathy’s brother indeed helped her) to set us lovingly back on the right path. Keeping God at the Center of ALL we do and say is, as you said, what our purpose is in life. I thank you for this reminder. I want so much to be ALL that God wants me to be. I love to serve HIM and I love to write. It is easier for me to express my intermost thoughts when I do. Thank you for letting us all post on this site and share our feelings with you and others. YOU, my sweet FRIEND, are such a fine example of what being a Christian is all about. Obedience and submission to our Creator is indeed the purpose HE intends for us. God Bless You. You are a blessing to us all!!!

    1. You’re so kind, Sue. I love doing this and I’m so thankful to have all of you visiting and lifting me up through your statements of faith and prayer. The Lord made us a family of faith to encourage and pray for one another through our good times and bad and He is so gracious in all that He does. I am truly thankful for all of you! We have been given such a beautiful purpose for life … to love God and love people through our gifts and abilities. God’s ways really are BEST! Blessings and hugs, dear friend.

    2. Kathy Francescon says:

What a sweet blessing you are to me and no doubt to others here! Your humility and earnestness of soul is so evident in every testament you share with Deb and all of us here. And with your every comment, I am astounded how alike we are! I too, love to write. I pour out my heart to God through writing…it just helps me to declutter the confusion and the swirling of too many thoughts and concerns going on at the same time! Writing sets my heart and my mind free, to enjoy my worship and praise to God, instead of trying to deal with whatever burdens or concerns I have turned over to Him! You are such a blessing and I know how deeply you feel about everything around you. You too, speak so honestly from your heart. I am sending the sincerest of hugs to you with love and thanksgiving for the comfort and beauty of your heart…your words always lift me up! Have a beautiful day holding on to all the promises of God! Through Him, we can also hold on to each other! Lifting you up in prayer for peace and joy to surround you today and always!

      1. Kathy,
Your note means a lot to me. When someone encourages another, it is a gift from God. I truly believe that. The Angels are whispering in the ear of the encourager. You are such a good writer; very eloquent. I have said before, I think we are cut from the same cloth. I love to write. I am a more “folksy” type of writer. I guess because my grandfather, whom I adored, used to tell me stories in his sweet and country manner. “Folk Lore!” They were all true of his life but I do think he embellished them a bit at times! I enjoyed every word and I wish I had recorded them. Of course I was a child and writing them down at that point, was not something I would think of. I guess I just write like I feel! And with my “Southern dialect!”
I am so happy that you and I have met on Deb’s site. Christian friends and beliefs are so vital to me especially as I grow older. I am growing in Christ. Still a work in progress. Child, I am pushing 80! Got another year and two months to go first. I just appreciate you so much. And, your hugs, love and good wishes. I wish the same for you. You bless me and others with your Christian knowledge and desire to OBEY the ONE who Is our DIVINE CREATOR.
        Much Love! And Hugs!

Wow! That is so true I need to always follow God’s purpose in my life. This felt like God is really touching my heart with all of my studies that I do daily to grow in his love, grace, and mercy. I am currently study the Biblical Names of Jesus and the chapter we are studying is I AM. We have studied the following titles: The Way, The Truth, and the Life; Lions of the Tribe of Judah; Lamb of God; Firstborn of the Dead; King of Kings; Word of God; and currently I AM.
God is speaking to me by sending this topic mention I AM which what I’m studying.
Thank you Deb for the wonderful prayers and words to help me to continue seeking God in my life.

    1. That sounds like a wonderful and inspiring Bible Study, Ana. I’m glad today’s devotion encouraged you, as well. Thank you for faithfully visiting and for sharing your thoughts and prayers. God bless you!
