Grieving is lonely and overwhelming. But we don't have to grieve alone. God is with us and He cares. He invites us to come to Him with our prayers and tears and trust Him to heal our broken hearts.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cried out … “Lord, I can’t do this. It’s too hard.”

I can imagine that you’ve had times when you were grieving and prayed similar words through tears as well.

I’m learning to walk through this season of grief and so thankful that the Lord is with me. I can’t imagine how people go through the loss of a loved one without God’s comfort and help.

He promises that “His grace is sufficient.” When Paul prayed and asked God to remove his unidentified “thorn in the flesh,” his heart heard the Lord reply…

I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time He said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:8–9

The truth is God doesn’t always prevent or remove our pain but when we take our broken hearts to Him … He promises to give us what we need to endure moment by moment.

So, let’s go to the One who understands our grief and pain and ask Him to give us courage, comfort, and hope for the future.

Grieving is lonely and overwhelming. But we don't have to grieve alone. God is with us and He cares. He invites us to come to Him with our prayers and tears and trust Him to heal our broken hearts.

Prayers Asking God for Help
When You’re Grieving

Jesus wept.

John 11:35

Our Savior stood at a friend’s tomb and cried. Our suffering touches the Lord’s heart and His tears reveal compassion and love. We live in a sinful world and suffering and death are the consequences of sin. But we are not alone…

Father, throughout Your Word, You have revealed how much You care about us. You know every detail of our lives and Your love and compassion are evident in all You do. You created a perfect world yet the effects of our sins have brought the consequences of grief and pain.

Please help me focus on You as I walk this journey. Please hold me close as I cling to Your promises and comfort me with Your peace. Amen.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

Psalm 34:18

Jesus promised that He would never leave or forsake us … that He would always be with us until the end of the age. Even when we’re grieving, maybe especially when we are grieving, we can be sure that the Lord is close.

Father, thank you for reminding me that You are with me as I walk through this painful season. Please help me remember that when my heart is broken and my spirit crushed, You are working in my life to put the pieces back together.

The future may feel uncertain and look different than I wanted … I know I can trust You to hold and guide me through the days ahead. Thank you, Lord. I place my heart in Your hands. I trust Your love. And with Your help, I will follow where You lead. Amen.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Jesus has won the victory over sin, death, and satan. As we walk through trials and seasons of grief He holds onto us with a hand that has defeated every enemy and He won’t let go. As we lean on Him, He holds us today, tomorrow, and forever and always.

Father, You hate death so much that You sent Your only Son, Jesus, to suffer our punishment and defeat the enemy of our souls. Because of Jesus, I can live my life confident that death is not the end because You have promised that through faith in Jesus, we have the hope of living with You eternally reunited with our loved ones who have gone before us.

Please remove my fear and give me courage. Hold me up and give me the strength I need as I walk the path ahead. Amen.

Grieving is lonely and overwhelming. But we don't have to grieve alone. God is with us and He cares. He invites us to come to Him with our prayers and tears and trust Him to heal our broken hearts.

He heals the brokenhearted
    and bandages their wounds.
He counts the stars
and calls them all by name.
How great is our Lord! His power is absolute!
    His understanding is beyond comprehension!

Psalm 147:3–5

When we’re grieving and the burden feels overwhelming … the Lord invites us to remember that He is the One who created every star in the sky and every plant, critter, and person. He knows the number of hairs on and thoughts in our heads. He’s aware of every emotion and He cares … “His understanding is beyond comprehension.”

Father God, I place my wounded heart in Your hands. I trust that You are great and powerful. I believe that You know my heart—past, present, and future. You know my greatest needs and smallest desires. You love me and You are always at work in me and around me molding and making me into the person You created me to be.

I thank you, Father, for giving me all that I need to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST You. Thank you for Your unfailing and everlasting love. Thank you for being the One for whom everything is possible … even healing a grieving heart. Amen.

“Look, God’s home is now among His people! He will live with them, and they will be His people. God Himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

Revelation 21:3–4

God is with us now in Spirit but the day is coming when we will see Him face-to-face. There is a time coming when there will be no more death … a day when our grieving will be replaced with neverending joy.

Father, Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy Kingdom come.” We pray that Your Kingdom of believers will grow throughout the world today and we pray in anticipation that our Savior will return soon for all who KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You.

We look forward to the day when we will walk with You like Adam and Eve in the Garden. We look forward to the day when our tears will be gone along with death, sorrow, and pain. We look forward to living in the world You created as You originally intended.

Until that day, I ask that You will hold me and heal me by Your grace and help me live every day for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

If you are visiting because you are grieving, I hope this blessed you and gave you hope. The Lord is with us. He is our hope and shield now and always.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. Deb, I know that this could not be so easy for you to write at this time of grief, but i do hope that sharing your feelings with us will bring you comfort and peace. I am grateful for all of the verses and I have them all on index cards that I pull and read often. I know that the Lord “collects my tears in His bottle and records them in His book.” I am confident that HE knows them all and HE cries with me. We all have grief in our lives. Death of a loved one is so hard to deal with alone. Thankfully we all have our LORD AND SAVIOR to be there with us.
My grief you know because I have shared it with you privately. I cry every day. Everyday!! But, like Paul and the thorn in his flesh, I know that God is giving me strength to endure. He has HIS plan and I can trust that.
I am so very thankful and so very grateful for you. You share, you care and you give us so much to ponder through your posts. We are all thankful for your service to our GREAT GOD!
God Bless You My Sweet Friend. I pray that you have a good and safe weekend, and always.
    Hugs!

    1. Nicely said Sue! Thank you

    2. Karen Lucas says:

I agree with everything Sue has written. Grief comes in many different forms. I can’t imagine facing the future without the love and comfort of my Savior.
You are loved and prayed for daily Deb.

      1. Thank you, dear friend! I am praying for you and Brent each day, too. Our Lord is faithful to give us what we need moment by moment. Blessings and hugs!

    3. You are such a dear friend, Sue. I had to say goodbye to our pup, Sadie, this weekend, too. I can’t imagine trying to go through any of this without the Lord’s help. He is collecting my tears and holding me close. I continue to pray the same for you. I thank the Lord for you, too. Your encouragement and the way you share your story and your faith with us blesses me daily. Blessings and BIG HUGS!

      1. Deb,
I am so sorry to hear about Sadie. You really have had a lot to deal with these past few weeks with Rev’s passing and now Sadie. It is so difficult to lose a pet under any circumstance, but now when you want to hold on and cuddle with them so much it has to be worse. Thankfully you have the Lord in your heart and soul and HE is ALWAYS AVAILABLE. HE does hold you in HIS LOVING HANDS; constantly. I have always believed that GOD gives us our sweet fur friends to let us see and feel just a taste of the unconditional love HE is ALL ABOUT. They are truly our ANGELS on Earth!! Please know that you are ever in my prayers and my heart too. You have such strength (It comes from God, I know!!) and we appreciate you. All of us are here for you, as you have been for us. And I say to you, GREAT IS HIS FAITHFULNESS!”
Much Love and Many Hugs too!!

        1. I agree, Sue. I’ve learned a lot about what it means to love the Master through the love of my pups. Thank you, dear friend! HUGS!

  2. ANGIE SCALES says:

Debs, you give so much love through the Lord, may you now take time to be still, and let the Lord comfort and strengthen you.❤️

    1. Thank you, Angie. I do take time each day to just be still. It actually helps me to interact with all of you here and to focus on the Lord as I write. His gracious love is holding me close and giving me strength. Thanks for visiting and for your kind encouragement. God’s blessings!
