The cure for disappointment is hope. These verses and prayers will address your emotions and help you pray for restored hope when you are disappointed and don't know what to do or where to turn.

Everyone faces disappointment.

Circumstances may be disappointing. People may disappoint us. And more often than we care to think about … we disappoint ourselves.

What are we supposed to do when we’re disappointed?

We all know how it feels but how do we describe what it is?

The dictionary defines disappointment this way:

  • Disappointment is being depressed or discouraged by the failure of one’s hopes or expectations.

Children know what it’s like to have hopes and expectations. They hope for that special gift or perfect outing. They expect to make the team or get an “A.”

Adults hope to find the perfect spouse, have children, get the ideal job, take the ideal vacation, and enjoy optimal health. And they expect that the appropriate amount of effort will result in the anticipated outcome.

Throughout Scripture, there are accounts of God’s people dealing with disappointment.

Solomon wrote…

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.

Proverbs 13:12

When you and I place our hopes and expectations on God’s eternal promises we will never be disappointed because our hope is secure in Jesus. He fulfilled God’s promise to save us from sin and assured us that all of God’s promises are true forever.

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for His glory.

2 Corinthians 1:20

So, let’s prayerfully take our disappointments to the Lord today and thank Him for the hope that promises we will never be disappointed.

The cure for disappointment is hope. These verses and prayers will address your emotions and help you pray for restored hope when you are disappointed and don't know what to do or where to turn.

A Prayer to The Times You’re Disappointed

Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:5

Father, when I put my hope in worldly things I am easily disappointed. When I put my hope in people, I learn they are often inconsistent and untrustworthy. And when I put my hope in myself, well, I can’t get that right either.

I am so sorry for my failure to fully trust You alone. Please forgive me and help me remember that You are my source of hope and for that, I thank and praise You now and forever. Amen.

This hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.

Romans 5:5

Heavenly Father, Your promises assure me of Your great love. Jesus demonstrated Your love and the Spirit fills our hearts with that love. With Your love filling every part of my life … I can live with unfailing hope that will never disappoint.

You created us to love and be loved. Our hearts will forever be restless until we surrender ourselves to You in faith … until we SEEK, KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE You. By Your grace, help me focus on who You are and all You have done and continue to do. This world will disappoint me but You never fail. Your grace and mercy are sufficient for every need. Amen.

We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28

I love You, Lord. Your promise to work Your plans and purposes in my life and use them for my eternal good is a humbling and overwhelming blessing. This promise, written by Paul, contains words that we, your children, claim and cling to daily.

You are always present and at work in my life. Please keep me centered on Your will so that I might live for Your glory and love as You desire. I give myself to You asking You to work in me and through me helping me share Your love in all situations and circumstances.

And Lord, when I am disappointed, please heal my heart and set me on the path that You want for me. Amen.

The cure for disappointment is hope. These verses and prayers will address your emotions and help you pray for restored hope when you are disappointed and don't know what to do or where to turn.

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and He turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what He has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the Lord.

Psalm 40:1–3

Father, when I am in a pit of despair and disappointment … please hear my prayer and save me. Reach down, lift me up, and plant my feet on the firm foundation of faith in my Lord and Savior, Jesus.

With Your Spirit’s help, I will wait on Your timing because I have faith that You are always at work in my life … even when I’m waiting. And I believe that in the end, You will give me another beautiful song of praise to sing for the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. We believe with our hearts, and so we are made right with God. And we declare with our mouths that we believe, and so we are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be disappointed.”

Romans 10:9–11

Lord Jesus, I believe. By Your grace, I ask You to “help me overcome my moments of doubt and unbelief.” You gave Yourself for me, so I might be forgiven and made right with God. I believe.

Because of all that You have done for me, Your Word promises that my eternal future is secure. I can trust Your promises …You are faithful and I will never be disappointed.

I want the world to KNOW You and experience the peace and joy of LOVING and TRUSTING You. Please give me the words and opportunities to tell of the hope I have within me because of who You are and all You’ve done. I worship You now and forever. Amen.

So, what will you do when you’re disappointed?

It’s easy to pout, complain, and sit around in misery. But what if we gave all our disappointment to God in faith and invited Him to replace it with the hope that never fails and lasts forever?

Then we can proclaim with David…

Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
    I will praise Him again—
    my Savior and my God!

Psalm 42:11

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He replace your discouragement with the hope that never fails.
