Have you ever had a time when you were so overwhelmed by life’s circumstances that although you wanted to pray . . . you just couldn’t find the words.

All you could think about was that you wanted and needed to talk with God about what was going on but your emotions were so powerful all you could do was cry out…

“Lord, please help me!”

I can remember one time like it happened yesterday. I’d been through a traumatic experience a couple of days earlier and then unexpectedly received more bad news.

Through feelings of fear, I called Rev and through my sobs, I tried to say, “I need you to come and pray with me. I want to pray. I need to pray but I can’t find the words.

My favorite prayer partner came to me quickly as he could and together we put the cries of our hearts into prayerful pleas.

I’ve had other times in my life when emotional overload made it hard for my brain to work. Times when my tears saturated my thoughts and I just needed the Lord to hear the unspoken cries of my heart.

And that’s what I’m praying about today.

If you’re struggling with prayer-crushing over-powering emotions join me as I pray Scripture and ask God to hear the cries of our hearts when we just can’t find the words.

Verses that will Help You Pray When You Have No Words

Hear my prayer, O Lord;
    listen to my plea!
    Answer me because
You are faithful and righteous.

Psalm 143:1

Father, Your Word tells me You are love. It tells me to “never stop praying.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) You want me to come to You with all my needs. So, I come to You today with nothing but my tears and wordless pleas. Lord, I need You! I believe You are faithful and righteous, gracious and merciful, just and true. I give this problem and all I am to You. Please give me the courage and strength and everything else I need today. Help me, for You are the God who sees me. (Genesis 16:13) You are my Provider. I give you my thanks and praise. Amen.

But you, O Lord, are a shield around me;
    You are my glory,
the one who holds my head high.
I cried out to the Lord,
and He answered me from His holy mountain.

Psalm 3:3–4

Father, I believe that You are with me. I hold on to the promise that You guard and protect me. I need to feel You with me, Lord. My life feels fragile and I’m frightened. Please shield me with Your grace and mercy. I am so sorry for all the times I stubbornly believed I could handle things on my own. I’m sorry for failing to follow Your perfect will for me.

Please forgive me. Lift my head and turn my eyes toward You. You are the Rock, who gives me courage. You give me everything I need and I need more of You. Amen.

The Spirit helps us with our weakness. We do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit Himself speaks to God for us, even begs God for us with deep feelings that words cannot explain.

Romans 8:26

Father, Thank you for this word. When I am weak. when my heart is heavy and I don’t know what or how to pray . . . Your Spirit helps me. He knows my heart and Yours and speaks my needs to You even when they are unclear to me.

Spirit, thank you for speaking to God for me. You know everything about me. You know my yesterday, my today, and my tomorrow. You know what’s best for me. You know the anxious thoughts behind my wordless prayer. Nothing is new to You. Nothing too difficult. Thank you for always being with me. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for Your beyond understanding peace. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.

I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 1:19–20

Father, nothing is impossible for You. Power for life is in and with You. You raised Jesus from the dead. My current problems, though difficult, are not beyond Your power and love.

So, I come to You praying Jesus’ Garden prayer, “Abba, Father.” He cried out, “everything is possible for You. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” (Mark 14:36) I trust Your will for me because You have given me everything I need through Jesus, who lived, died, and rose again that I might have freedom from sin and life everlasting. Thanks and praise now and forever. Amen.

Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into His glorious presence without a single fault.

Jude 1:24

Lord, I praise You. When things appear fragile and uncertain. When the enemy tries to fill my mind with doubts . . . I come to You. Take my doubts and fears. Gather my tears and hold them close. Fill my heart and mind with Your promises. May I live each day with joyful anticipation of the future You promised long ago. By Your grace, fill me with hope as I remember that “this too shall pass.” This time in my life is just a moment on the journey to my forever home in Your presence. You are the Way, the Truth, and the Life . . . my promise now and forever. Thank you. I pray by Your grace that I might live for Your glory. Amen.

Friend, whatever is hurting your heart today, give it to Jesus.

Be persistent in prayer even if you have no words and can only lift up broken-hearted cries . . . the Lord is with You. He sees you. He loves you. He hears the cries of your heart.

Never stop praying. 1 Thessalonians 5:17

When you have words and even when you don’t. Trust Him. This is only a season, the best is yet to come.

Blessings Deb! I always look so forward to your post and as usual, your words today have totally struck! I can so relate to being sooo overwhelmed, I become frozen! Honestly, feel paralyzed…unable to think, unable to move, and yet in so much pain. Several times in my life, I have crawled and I mean literally crawled into a dark closet and cried what I imagined would be enough tears to fill an ocean. And yet, here today God is blessing me to read your post…so yes indeed, God truly does hear our cries of the heart!! Praise His Holy Name! And your very last sentence today has jumped off the page into my heart, never to be forgotten! It is going in my journal and on my frig as a daily prayer!! I pray by Your grace that I might live for Your glory!! You have brought the words to light for what my heart feels, but couldn’t find the words to pray! You are a special blessing straight from God to me today!! Love and hugs and prayers always!

  8. Meme Signor says:

Thank you, Deb, for your beautifully written words. On several occasions your blessings have been exactly what I needed to read to know God is always with me. He is always listening. My prayer today is for understanding. Guidance. Direction. My parents are in their late 70’s, early 80’s. My father is in denial of mom’s condition: early Alzheimer’s. I am the only child (of 4) nearby. Mom needs better care. Dad says she needs to take care of herself. I am torn. My husband and I homeschool our 5 children, since the pandemic. I don’t know how I can juggle homeschool and properly care for my Mother. Do we send the kids back to traditional school? Do I hire someone despite dad’s adamance against it? I am at a lost. I wake thinking about this. Daily. And I ask Father God to help me, but I am having a hard time hearing His words. Please pray for answers. For direction. I need God’s help. I need the Holy Spirit to fill me with wisdom and strength, to know what my role is. In Jesus name, Amen.

    1. I am praying for you and for your parents, Meme. Those are such difficult situations. I’m asking God to give you wisdom and direction and that He will help your father better understand the situation and accept the help they need. God be with you and bless you!
