Want Real Peace? You Need To Live Fully Right Now

We all want real peace. Peace we can count on. Peace that’s true, deep, and lasting.

But I’ve been learning that the only way to experience real peace is to live fully right now.

You and I can’t enjoy inner peace when our thoughts are filled with regret, resentment, and worry.

If we’re carrying yesterday’s burdens or tomorrow’s what-ifs, we can’t have the peace we want or that God wants for us.

Isaiah wrote…

You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in You,
all whose thoughts are fixed on You!

Isaiah 26:3

And that’s what the Lord wants for us. He wants us to focus on Him… to let go of yesterday’s sin, trusting that when we surrender to Him in repentance, we are forgiven completely.

David wrote…

For His unfailing love toward those who fear Him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.

Psalm 103:11–12

God graciously supplies the clean slate we need to let go of yesterday’s regret, and offers us what we need to be set free from the pain we’ve endured because of other people’s sins. He knows we can’t have real peace if we’re clinging to shame, bitterness, and unforgiveness.

Paul wrote…

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:31–32 (NIV)

Jesus gave Himself so that you and I can live free of regret and resentment.

With the hope we have in Christ Jesus, we can surrender our worries and fears about the future.

Peter, who walked with Jesus, wrote…

Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.

1 Peter 5:7

God cares about us and loves us so much that He has provided everything we need to live with real peace right now. He sent Jesus, who lovingly carried the burden of our sins to the cross, and by His saving grace we have everything we need to live with peace in the present.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7

With the power of the Spirit within us, through faith in Christ Jesus, we have what we need to live fully today. We can kick our regret, resentment, and worry out of the house.

John wrote…

We know that the Son of God has come, and He has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and He is eternal life.

1 John 5:20

That’s real peace. Knowing and loving the true God. He is all we need today, tomorrow, and always.

The Lord is my shepherd;
    I have all that I need.

Psalm 23:1

He is our hope for the future.

For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future… There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.

Ephesians 4:4–6

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Live Today with Real Peace

Father God, You are the source of our peace. I’m learning it’s impossible to have real peace without You. You promise that when I repent, my sins are gone … that You never think of them again, helps me let go of regret. I am forgiven through Your gracious gift of Jesus and His loving sacrifice,

You tell me that because of all You have forgiven in me, I am to forgive and let go of any resentment I have toward those who have caused me pain.

Those two things alone give me more peace, but You know that I’m prone to fear and anxiety, too. Oh, how often I allow it to ruin my attitude and upset my day.

Please forgive me for giving in to those things that interfere with my peace. I know the only way to experience peace today is to focus my heart and mind on You… trusting You to guide me along the right path for my life.

David wrote… “The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8)

I trust You, Lord. Following You one day at a time, living fully in the present, is the only way for me to live with real peace. Please help me. In the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

You and I can’t control the world around us, but with the Spirit’s help, we can control the thoughts and attitudes within us. If we want to enjoy real peace in our lives, we must let go of yesterday’s regret and resentment while refusing to fret over tomorrow’s unknowns.

Here’s a word of encouragement to help us remember…

“God can work peace through us only if He has worked peace in us… Those who are in the best of circumstances, but without God, can never find peace, but those in the worst of circumstances with God, need never lack peace.” ~ John MacArthur

And Jesus’ promise…

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33

May our gracious God give you everything you need to enjoy the peace that passes understanding each day. Peace made possible through our Lord and Savior, Jesus.
