How to Know for Sure You Can Confidently Trust God

Do you confidently trust God? What does it mean to have confidence? It is trusting in the reliability of the source of our trust. And we can be confident God is reliable and trustworthy.

Where do you place your confidence?

Confidence is fully trusting in the powers, integrity, dependability, and reliability of a person.

Culture encourages us to have self-confidence but I have to admit that in a crisis my self-confidence often goes down the drain. And honestly, maybe that’s what’s supposed to happen.

Psalm 108 is made up of the final verses from two previous psalms of David.

It begins with David stating that he knows for sure that he can confidently trust God…

My heart is confident in You, O God;
no wonder I can sing Your praises with all my heart!

Psalm 108:1

When life’s circumstances fill me with doubt and destroy my self-confidence, I need someplace and someone on can confidently count on.

I found when I was younger . . . I had a tendency to run to friends, family, professionals, or advisors for help. I would go searching for answers in information and knowledge. But experience has taught me that many of those sources even with their best intentions are often unreliable.

And if someone or something is unreliable . . . well, it’s impossible to feel confident about them.

The more we search God’s Word, understand His activity throughout history, and recognize His work in and around us . . . the greater the realization that we have every reason to be sure we can confidently trust God.

I love the way the writer of the Book of Hebrews talks about faith and confidence…

Now faith means putting our full confidence in the things we hope for, it means being certain of things we cannot see.

Hebrews 11:1 (Philipps)

God has given both His promise and His oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Hebrews 6:18 (NLT)

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)

So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

Hebrews 10:35–36 (NLT)

So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

Hebrews 13:6 (NLT)

I have faith that I can confidently trust God because I have experienced times in my life when I’ve cried out to Him in prayer saying, “Lord, I can’t do this!”

And He has lovingly replied, “I know. Just trust me. Come to me with your burden and I will help you.”

And He did! He helped me every time and proved that I can confidently trust His love and promises.

So, spend some time today thinking about the ways God has helped you in the past. Think about the promises He has kept in Your life and in the lives of the people around you. And think about the sacrifice He made to show us just how very much He loves us.

Do you confidently trust God? What does it mean to have confidence? It is trusting in the reliability of the source of our trust. And we can be confident God is reliable and trustworthy.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Confidently Trust God

Heavenly Father, You have given us countless reasons to live with confidence trusting that You are who You say You are and that You faithfully keep Your promises. If You say that You will do something we can count on You to do it.

So, I will proclaim the words of David…

For your unfailing love is higher than the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. (Psalm 108:4)

Whatever is going on in my life, You invite me to come to You and pray for victory. Your Word says that You fight for us. (Deuteronomy 20:4) You support Your children and give them strength. (Psalm 18:35) And You give us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57)

You have shown Your love for me through Your care and compassion in every area of my life. When I consider all the ways You have guided and protected me along Your prepared paths . . . I am humbled that You would think of me at all. And yet, Your Word says that Your Spirit lives with and within me.

In faith, I give myself to You. Please give me everything I need to trust and obey Your will and faithfully sing Your praises with all my heart. Amen.

Do you confidently trust God? What does it mean to have confidence? It is trusting in the reliability of the source of our trust. And we can be confident God is reliable and trustworthy.

“Faith is the solid, unshakable confidence in God which is built upon the assurance that He is faithful to His promises.” ~ Dr. David Jeremiah

So, let me ask you again…

Where do you place your confidence?

Where you and I place our confidence is where our hope will be found. So, may we make the Lord our confidence and our hope. And may we trust Him to give us everything we need to live our faith out loud for His glory.

May the Lord bless you. May He give you everything you need to confidently trust in Him.

We would love to pray for you.

When I think about Jesus’s sacrifice for us on the cross. What more could he do to prove His love. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not ours. As high as the heavens are from earth so are His ways. (Isaiah 55:8) I trust Him and pray His Holy Spirit will continue to do a finishing work in me.
