35 Powerful “I Am” Verses – God Is Who He Says He Is

Part of Seeking God above all else is knowing the things He promises about Himself. Here are 35 "I Am" Verses - where God tells us who He is and what He does.

Do you believe God is who He says He is? Do you believe He is the “I Am”?

I know it takes strong faith to have big peace . . . especially when life is hard.

But strong faith in anything that isn’t true or able to keep promises might make us feel better but it won’t give you and me real and lasting peace.

Have you ever believed any of the following things and then realized they were untrue?

  • It’s easier to avoid my problems than to face them.
  • Life should be fair.
  • If I feel it, it must be true.
  • I can’t help it. It’s just who I am.
  • I can’t be happy until…

I know I have. And there was no peace in avoidance, shoulds, and feelings.

To know “the peace that goes beyond understanding,” you and I have to know and trust the Giver of true peace.

So, I went digging.

Digging to know the Giver better.

Who Does God Say He Is?

And I found 35 “I am” verses. Things God says about Himself because He wants us to know and trust Him. He wants to give us peace.

I’m saving this list so I can reject peace robbers and lies by comparing them to the truth.

It overwhelms me to realize God wants us to know Him . . . not just about Him but know Him. His character. His desires. His commands. His heart.

You and I can trust God is who He says He is. And that is a blessing that gives peace . . . the kind of peace that goes beyond understanding.

      Hi Deb,

My name is Deb Baker and my late husband’s initials were CMB.
I googled verses where God says I AM to save time and found your blog. I too had a great awakening in 2007 regarding God’s grace because I read a wonderful book by Joseph Prince called, “Destined to Reign”. That book changed my thinking, and my life. I look forward to exploring your blog. God bless you!

      1. Deb, thank you so much for visiting and for taking the time to say “hello.” I haven’t read that book, I will have to check it out! Thank you, again! God bless you!

          2. Thank you for visiting and reaching out, Benjamin. If you have a Bible, I recommend you begin by reading the New Testament. I like to read John first, then Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Romans. You can add Psalms and then begin Genesis and read it all. Before you read, pray and ask God to teach you the truth through each page and speak to your heart and mind the things He wants you to know. I’m praying for you … asking God to bless your time in His Word.

    2. Thank you for God words

      1. Thank you for sharing, Deb! I look forward to keeping in touch and sharing with you too. God bless you as you are blessing and encouraging others this way.

    1. Amen!
      Me too.
If our Father did it before, He is certainly able to do it again.

  16. Hi,

I’m sure when this blog was written. But I just want to praise God and ask that He bless you for doing the Lord’s work.

I have been meditating since the beginning of the month of May 2019 asking the question “God who are you?”

On May 5/18/19 I found this post which answers that question. This was a moment of spiritual enlightenment for me.

May God continue to pour his knowledge in you!

    1. Mia, I am so blessed to know God used this to speak to your heart and mind. Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know. His love for us is so amazing. I read the following words written by Pastor John Snyder … He (Jesus) wants us to know that if we’ll live our lives in and with His love (and His help), we’ll be fulfilled in ways we couldn’t even imagine. It just doesn’t get any better than that! God bless you!

  18. Hi Deb
I am so gratefull for the compilation. I stumbled upon this while trying to recall a introduction a sensational voice gave years ago…
I AM GOD YOUR GOD, ALPHA AND OMEGA, I AM THE BEGINNING AND THE END…… and I can’t remember the rest. I feel awful and regret not writing it down.
Anyways, your article lifted my spirit and I appreciate it.

    Bless you!

    1. I am glad it blessed you, Tatenda. I believe you’re looking for Revelation 1:8 – “I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”

I love that our Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever. May He bless you and fill you with His peace.

  24. Jason VanDerpoel says:

I am grateful to God for leading you to make this site, and allowing your love to flow out to many un need and I know God Loves You SO Very Much for praising him in this way, as you do in many. God has gifted me with a full blast Kundalini Awakening within me, leading me directly to him through Jesus. I am has shown me that his name has been used in vain many times and unbeknownst to many. I AM is a powerful mighty name of He Who Loves You All So Much. Using His name prior to a negative word is like discrediting his existence.
Example “I Am not able to do that”, well to me If I AM is God than How can he Not do ANYTHING? Instead by using his name, praising, him as I AM, He will lift You over any barrier, and shelter You through any storm. Example “I AM enjoying the ease in which I AM able to accomplish this task, or jump this hurdle, or shed this pain. Always Glory be to God As I AM. Thank YOU and I AM Grateful to witness You, Much Love to You and May God Bless You continually as I AM Gracefully.

    1. Thank you for visiting, Jason, and for leaving this word of encouragement. May God be with you and bless you!

  25. Jenny Young says:

Hi, I love this list you have made. I was also googling I am verses and came across this. I wanted to know what version in your bible you were using. I was looking up the verses and some are different from the version I read. Thanks!

    1. Hi, Jenny! Thanks so much! I use the New Living Translation. I will occasionally use a different translation but will always notate it when I do. Thanks again and God bless.

      1. Jenny Young says:

Ahh, thank you!! The version I was using NKJV doesn’t have as many “I am” in it so I wanted to use the same version

      2. Jenny Young says:

I know your list probably does not include all of the “I am” verses in the bible, but I just wanted to say two that I love also are John 10:9 and John 15:1
